Chapter 43

Continue to the next chapter, make it 12000 words or longer and more detailed. Expand the interaction, make more dialogues and interaction between characters. Make it more show than tell. Write their interaction in more detailed. Make it more subtle, more show than tell story telling with intense emotional moments and atmosfer. Show some of it from kanato's friends first person POV (sho, Rou, Lauren, kuzuha). Make it has more emotional and intense dialogue and interaction. Make it much much more slower paced and detailed. Show more of kanato's friends respond and reaction (what they do and say, what they think and feel) about the whole situation. Kanato's friends come over for the last valorant practice cus the tournament will start in 3 days, kanato has told them to get in without knocking, Kanato has left the door unlock because Akira was asleep so he doesn't want the door bell sound awake him. What kanato's friends doesn't expect is to walk in to a completly silent apartment when they arrived. Turn out Kanato has fall asleep trough his alarm because he has been feeding Akira with spiritual energy all night and almost pass out himself. Kanato's friends doesn't wanna barge into kanato's bedroom but bacause kanato doesn't came out after they looking all around the apartment and keep calling him they finally knock at the bedroom door. When there's no answer Lauren then try to open the bedroom door which actually unlock. Kanato's friends was shock when they saw both Kanato and Akira naked on the bed with only the blanket being the only thing covering their lower half. All of them paused in shocked and immediately getting incredibly flustered, they know all voltacion member are sexually active but knowing it and actually witnessing the clear evidence of your gorgeous Friends having sex is totally different experience. The scenery in front of them are undeniably sensual and it making their own brain start getting imaginatif and start making a picture of the sex that probably happen before both Kanato and Akira fall asleep. The scenery inside the bedroom painting a picture they try hard not to see, the empty plate of something looks like chocolate moouse cake (that kanato's friends know as kanato's favorit, kanato probably eating it before he start... eating Akira), the lube bottle on the table, kanato and Akira's clothes scatter around the floor, the wet wipes package, a small bucket of water with soft damp cloth (kanato probably use it to clean up Akira after the sex, kanato's friends try so hard not to picture the scene), the smell of sweat and sex, and the blanket that Hung dangerously low on kanato's waist (proving that kanato wasn't wearing anything under the blanket). They stunned for few seconds before snap themself back to reality and try to call Kanato again. All of them (sho, Rou, Lauren, and kuzuha) are conflicted, even with the door open kanato still doesn't awake when they call him, they start to get worry but they not sure if its appropriate to walk into the bedroom in this situation. But after kanato still not awake after getting Lauren and Rou decided to get in to atleast check on them and make sure they okay. The room was quite, it wasn't dark because of the light from kanato's floor to ceiling windows but the light was off. but when Rou turn on the light and Lauren they step closer the first one to react wasn't kanato, it was Akira who sense their presence and immediately jumped awake in hypervigilantm. only when Kanato hear Akira's surprised noises that he finally jumped awake and move on reflex to covering Akira in protective angle, covering Akira even when it exposed more of kanato's own body. with other hand embracing Akira kanato's other hand move on reflex pulling out a pistol from under his pillow and immediately point it on kanato's friends on the door. Kanato shout to them to get out but Lauren freezed in fear once the gun pointed really close to him, thankfully Rou immediately pull Lauren get out and close the door. Rou and Kuzuha immediately shout from out side, apolagize for barge in and say they just try to check on and awake kanato cus he was unresponsive no matter how much or how loud they try to calling him from outside. But kanato cut their sentence with a cold shout telling them to shut up, the voice so loud cold and dangerous that sho and Lauren get flinch in surprised outside. When kanato's friends get silence they can hear it faintly the ragged breath of Akira slowly getting panic and Kanato voice become extremely soft try as he try to calm Akira down. (Show more Kanato's friends reaction to the situation, what they do and say, what they think and feel about the situation, show it trough their action or dialogues or inner monolog). Kanato's friends can hear kanato saying a lot of reasurance words that sounds different from usually (the thing kanato said to calm Akira sounds oddly spesific), calling Akira with lovely pet names, and they can hear Akira's trying his best to calm down himself as he start to coughing and getting hard to breath. Kanato's friends can hear That for some reason kanato keep repeating saying that seraph is save. It took quite some time until they heard Akira calmed down, asking something in to kanato which kanato answer firmly before Akira start falling back asleep so fast that it almost sounds like he faint out. A few seconds later Kanato finally come out wearing only sweatpants that hang low on his waist and still bare chested, for a second kanato's friends forgot about the gun and get flustered when they saw Akira's grip and claw mark on kanato's body that clearly happen from a sex. Kanato's appearance remind them to the image of kanato and Akira naked on the bad few minutes ago and it makes all of then incredibly flustered, again knowing all voltacion member are sexually active and actually witnessing the evidence of your gorgeous Friends having sex is totally different experience. Kanato immediately bow and apolagize deeply. Kanato's friends know Kanato wasn't sorry about the nakedness or the intimacy display, kanato is a confident man that has fit body and gorgeous partner that he will never be ashame about. Kanato was apolagize about the gun and the harsh bark that happen out of control because he was panicking about Akira's condition. Kanato mention how it was completly unnecessary and he really regret it, especially since kanato's friends has come to check on them out of worry while kanato has been the one offering his place for practice yet he being the on sleep off his alarm and still alseep when they have to prepare for a stream in an hour. Kanato's friends immediately told kanato to calm down and told him to sit down and drink some water, especially  since Kanato himself looks pale and shaken. As kanato sit on the couch at the living room his friends start opening the food they bought for lunch together, Rou help taking some drink for Kanato as they start notice Kanato slightly trembling from possible hunger (physical hunger for food) and adrenaline. Kuzuha being the one who first to talk, mention what happen and genuenly asking why Kanato sleep with a gun under his pillow (not out of anger or judgement but out of concern cus kanato can accidently hurt innocent people especially when he can reach that gun easily when he still not fully awake). Kanato apolagize again, having another realisation of his horrible action, immediately try to reasure them that he already left the gun empty on purpose for safety measure. Kanato talk in fast in worry and visible stress that Lauren has to remind him to calm down and take another sip of water. Sho then suggest all of them start eating so that kanato can talk more relaxed. Rou then ask Kanato to just explain what happen from the start slowly, telling him to take his time. Kanato sounds tired and stress as he talk, brushing his hair again and again and sometimes scratching the back of his neck. Kanato slowly explain with more calm voice that he doesn't usually put a gun under his pillow, say he usually keep it inside the bedside drawer but he just need it last night which is why it was under his pillow today.  Kanato's friends stunned in the way kanato talk so casually about having gun inside his drawer on daily basis when they live in Japan where its so hard to get a gun that even some cops doesn't have in on patrol bacause ot was unnecessary, but no one point it out. Lauren then ask why the gun was under the pillow today and what Kanato looks like he pass out when they arrived. Kanato take a deep sigh before he start explaining that Kanato was feeding him last night (kanato's friends flustered again knowing that the feeding must not just a hug or energy transfer trough proximity but a full intens sex remember how both Kanato and Akira naked when kanato's friends found both of them, Show more Kanato's friends reaction to the situation, what they do and say, what they think and feel about the situation, show it trough their action or dialogues or inner monolog). But Akira has been having a nightmares lately and Akira use up his spiritual energy much faster when he was sick or unwell so Akira must be having another nightmare last night which is why he still consuming kanato's energy in his sleep even after the sex is over, that why Kanato pass out and unresponsive when they call him earlier cus Akira has drain his energy all night (which is why he also looks pale and trembling slightly). Rou point out that it doesn't explain anything about the gun. Kanato take another deep inhale before continue the explanation. Kanato remind them about the fact that seraph has tell them before, that Akira slowly getting broken and loosing hope when he start getting sent to honey trap mission at 15 years old and constantly getting send and get raped until they escaped SPIA at 21 years old, Akira only start lock in on the secret plan for his and seraph's escape plan when seraph getting an injury so bad that it almost kill him (seraph was 18 and Akira was 19 years old, seraph was coma for a week and need months to heal from the wound, SPIA almost discard seraph when he still in coma if not because Akira begging to the higher up to wait a little longer and offer to take more mission as replacement until Seraph awake and keep taking over more mission so that the higher up will give seraph the time he need to heal), seraph mention how after that incident Akira getting more focus on their escape preparation, not longer after seraph heal Akira and seraph get send to the infiltration mission to kanato's high school and met hibari and kanato over there they start getting along and Akira then offer kanato and hibari to joint them in Their plan to escape from underworld and have a clean life. Kanato point out the bullet scar on seraph's back was from that injury that almost kill him, seraph got shoot on his lung and lost a lot of blood, Akira said the SPIA doctors almost give up on Seraph on his coma and it was a miracle that seraph heal so perfectly without any complication, but kanato's private doctor say its because seraph get proper rest and enough recovery time to heal (unlike Akira who often get send to another mission even before he get physically or mentally stable), and the fact seraph's body is healthy and doesn't touched by SPIA performance enhancer drug at all aslo help a lot. (Show more Kanato's friends reaction to the situation, what they do and say, what they think and feel about the situation, show it trough their action or dialogues or inner monolog). Kanato's friends than ask how that injury related with the current situation. Kanato then explain the day seraph get shot and injured was the same date as yesterday, that's why Akira has been having nightmares about seraph lately, and the fact that seraph and hibari is having a concert on different prefecture out off Akira's sight not helping with his anxiety. Last night when the feeding session has over, kanato was still awake (kanato's friends remember Kanato still replying Their chat on discord until 2 a.m), an hour later Akira woke up in panic from another nightmare and beg kanato to makesure no one can come in, because he was having dream of the SPIA doctors try to turn off seraph's life support when he was still in coma, kanato try to reasure Akira that seraph is fine promised that no one will pass kanato and put the gun under the blanket to reasure Akira, kanato's friends was stunned when kanato casually mention that there's actually another gun under as Akira's own pillow which of course both has been emptied before kanato put it under their pillow (kanato's friends also too shock about the fact that both Kanato and Akira can use an actually gun just fine). (Show more Kanato's friends reaction to the situation, what they do and say, what they think and feel about the situation, show it trough their action or dialogues or inner monolog). Kanato continue explain that Akira has always hypervigilant with room lighting, even on normal condition Akira will snap awake when someone turn the light on or off in his sleep, which is why Akira immediately snap awake when kanato's friends turn on the light but he probably seeing another nightmares which is why he awake in panic, and the whole commotion trigger kanato to awake also in wary and hypervigilant. Kanato's friends finally relaxed after understand the whole situation. Kanato apolagize again, seems really guilty about the gun until kanato's friends told him to stop apolagize and start eating cus they has to start the stream soon, while Rou and sho has volunteer to help setting kanato's PC. After finished the food kanato shyly ask if they don't mind if Kanato bring Akira to the living room where they gonna play, say he just worry Akira might get more scared if he wake up alone, Kanato's friends of course having no problem with that. They saw kanato gently carry Akira who bundle up in kanato's duvet and lay him on the biggest couch at the living room (kanato's friends genuenly really grateful That kanato has put on a plain white t-shirt and a boxer on Akira before carry him out from the bedroom). Kanato's friends saw Kanato pull out a jacket that looks oddly like seraph's iconic long read coat and drape it over Akira's blanket before Kanato excuse himself to take a quick shower before the stream start. Kanato's friends talk about what just happen as they waiting for Kanato to finished the bath. They immediately shut up when Kanato comeback and ready to start the stream. After the stream that they cut short because Kanato clearly exhausted and half unfocus, kanato's friends stay, lounge around while chatting as kanato already move back to craddle Akira on the couch. Rou casually ask about the gun, but try to make it like a light topic cus the atmosfer still heavy from the incident this afternoon, Rou ask if all voltacion have weapon in their houses remember they all come from dangerous back ground. Kanato confirm that its true, he start explaining but talk in such casual way, as if having fire arms in Japan one of the most safe country in the world is a standard procedure for safety. Start with hibari, he does have a gun but hibari put in actual safety box and only keep it for unexpected emergency situation. Kanato himself have one that he usually put inside his side bed drawer with full magazine on, he has been doing it after he get various kidnap and murder attempt during middle school and high school and the habit is hard to shake off. The dangerous one is seraph, he not only has gun inside the bedside drawer with bullet in it but also the with the gun safety off, on trigger and it could shoot someone, but thankfully seraph has self control of a saint that he never point it on wrong person like Kanato did this afternoon, and seraph also has folded knife under his pillow so he mostlikely reach to the knife first if danger approach (kanato's friends remember Saw seraph's folded knife on kanato's night stand when he stay over here at kanato's apartment). Akira has a gun inside his drawer but it was empty, cus Akira rather he get hurt more than hurting anyone, he just keep the weapon close with him cus it help him relaxed and felt safe at night, unlike kanato or seraph he wasn't try to hurt anyone. Akira has another gun with bullet and his old spy gears lock in safety box like hibari, Akira just keeping it in case he ever need it again. 'You don't bring the gun when we stay over outside, right??' Lauren asking half joking. Kanato immediately say no they don't, especially since it hard explain a gun in japan, though seraph walk around with his folded knife everywhere he go. Seraph can be clumsy sometimes, he forgot his phone at Akira's apartment multiple times but he never forget to bring that knife. Kanato chuckled as he tell them how seraph has a ridiculously expensive and cool looking knife that made from some kind of hard gem, Akira spend most of his saving during his spy era and custom order that knife for seraph knowing Seraph already walking around with an old butterfly knife at the time, the blade is made of Sharp black diamond that would never rust and rarely ever need sharped, and because the whole knife doesn't has any metal it would trigger a metal detector and seraph can bring it literally anywhere even pass air port security system without any alarm. Akira gave it to seraph before they both get send for infiltration mission at kanato's boarding high school. (Show more Kanato's friends reaction to the situation, what they do and say, what they think and feel about the situation, show it trough their action or dialogues or inner monolog). Kuzuha then move on the topic, Kuzuha's unit called Chronoir consist of Kuzuha and Kanae (another famous vtuber from nijisanji) will celebrate their 9 years anniversary. Kanae plan to held a party at a high end club at Tokyo tower and Kuzuha what to invite sho, Rou, Lauren, and voltaction member as his friends. But since seraph and hibari still have concert out of the city he hope at least kanato and Akira would come. Kanato say he will ask Akira later but he probably will end up go alone cus Akira doesn't really like go to a club, in Akira's past a night club is the place where his target doing drug party, drug Akira and rape him, and Akira doesn't really like crowded place in the first place, he has been rejecting every invitation from other vtubers to hangout at a club, even when voltaction member going to drink some alcohol they most likely go to more less crowded bar or Izakaya or a restaurant with private room. But kuzuha quickly explain that kanae promise to provide a secluded place for Kuzuha's friends to hangout comfortably because kuzuha is a bit of shy person himself and kanae know kuzuha might not even know half of kanae's guests. So kanato say he will ask Akira when he wake up. Additional information: the conversation has comedic moment and has heavy emotional moment. Seraph still mention Akira as 'Nagi-chan' when he talk about Akira, and it always make Kanato's friends stunned in weird way and in endearing way how the big stoic guy like seraph calling Akira with such a cute nick name. All kanato's friends understand Japanese, they just talk in English most of the time. Akira often slip up to speak Japanese during vulnerable moment (when he really happy, sleepy, or scared) because it was his native language during SPIA, which is kinda cute cus he Always sounds more relaxed and less professional when he talk in Japanese. Hibari is 24 years old (the oldest in voltaction), Akira is also 24 years old, Seraph and kanato is 23 years old (seraph is the youngest). Kanato's friends also 23 years old but they on the same grade with Akira and hibari, one of them is in the same class with Akira and hibari. Sometimes kanato's friends got flustered by the intimacy or domesticity that voltaction member display especially towards Akira, also all of them looks good. Show their reaction (getting flustered, or shy, or surprised, or aroused, or find it cute) every time other member do intimate gesture to Akira or when they saw Akira's reaction to the romantic gesture (when Akira lean into it or get flustered instead). You can show more about what they think or felt about the situation from first person POV but only for kanato's friends. (Kanato's gaming friends is the same people from some previous chapters). Kanato's friends is the famous vtubers that focus on fps and gaming stream, it was his team mates that kanato often playing game with and also his team mates during fps tournament. Kuzuha is a really famous senior vtuber in nijisanji, Lauren is also more senior than voltaction, Koyanagi Rou is voltaction junior that debut 6 months after voltaction. Lauren kuzuha call Kanato as 'kanato' or 'KNT' which is the game username that Kanato often use. Rou and sho the juniors call kanato as 'Kanato-san'. Learn about Kuzuha, kanae, Lauren, and Koyanagi Rou, the vtubers from nijisanji. Lauren call Akira as 'Akira-kun', Lauren has playfull and outgoing personality. Kuzuha call Akira as 'Shikinagi-san', Kuzuha is a bit more shy to new people, he close with Kanato but not really close with Akira, but he get excited once they start playing game. Rou call Akira as 'Nagi-san', cus he quite close with Akira (they have done some stream together), Rou has more laid back and relaxed personality. Kanato and Akira call kuzuha as 'Kuzuha-senpai', Lauren as 'Lauren-san', and Rou as 'Rou-kun'. Hoshirube Sho is debut in the same group with Rou, they debut a year after voltaction, sho called Akira as 'Akira-san'. Akira take care of the junior vtuber a lot which is why the juniors also like him a lot. Sho is quick witted and has sharp tounge but he has soft voice which is help make him sounds a little more harmless. Kuzuha Lauren and Rou has really mischiveous personality, they like to joke around especially with Kanato. Kanato call sho as 'Sho-kun', Akira call him as 'Rube-kun'.  Akira is 174 cm tall and weight 60 kg, kanato is 177 cm and weight 70 kg, hibari is 183 cm and weight 68 kg, seraph is 187 and weight 76 kg. All of them have fit body with athletic muscle but Akira and hibari has more lean build while Kanato and Seraph has more buff build. Make the scene linger longer, develop the dialogues and banter, make it intimate and full of emotion. Kanato and his friends has more casual dynamic. hibari has golden retriever energy and very friendly personality that sometimes people forget that he was the oldest one on voltaction. Kanato call Akira, seraph, and hibari with the name without honorifics. Seraph is the only one who call Akira as 'nagi-chan', hibari and kanato call Akira as 'akira'. Akira call hibari as 'Tarai'. Akira call seraph as 'Serao'. Kanato's friends calling Akira as 'Akira-kun' or 'akira-san'. Kanato call hibari as 'hibari' or 'hiba' on intimate moments. Kanato has blonde hair, seraph has pink hair with red strikes, hibari has purple hair, Akira has black hair. Akira has the deepest voice between the four of them which make him usually sounds older than he actually are, which is why it sound wrong every time they hear Akira whine or whimper from pain or fear when his voice usually so confident and comforting. Kanato and Seraph has higher voice (seraph voice is the highest between four of them), hibari has wide range (he is very talented singer after all), hibari can hit high note but also can be rasp on rock song or low like when he tease his fans, but Akira's voice still deeper than hibari. Akira has more casual and manly behavior on daily basis.

The morning light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Kanato's apartment, casting long pale rectangles across the concrete floor. The leather couch sat empty, the kitchen counter clean, the whole space holding a silence that felt wrong — too still, too heavy for a day when practice was scheduled.

"He said to come in without knocking, right?" Rou's voice was low as he pushed the door open, stepping inside with the bag of takeout swinging from his fingers. "Said the bell might wake Akira."

Sho followed close behind, his sharp eyes scanning the living room. "Kanato?"

Nothing. The apartment answered with the hum of the refrigerator and the distant tick of a clock.

Lauren stepped past them both, his gaze sweeping the empty couch, the dark monitor, the closed bedroom door. "He said he'd leave the door unlocked."

"It was unlocked." Kuzuha came last, easing the door shut behind him. The soft click sounded too loud in the stillness.

They stood in the living room, four men holding bags of food and the weight of an expectation that had already curdled into something else. The apartment was clean — too clean, the way spaces get when someone has spent the night not sleeping. A half-empty glass of water on the coffee table. A phone face-down beside it. Kanato's jacket draped over the armchair, the one he wore yesterday. Still there. Still here.

"Maybe he's in the bathroom," Sho offered, but his voice didn't believe it.

Rou set the food on the kitchen counter and pulled out his phone. "I'll call him."

The ringtone came from the bedroom. Muffled. Close. They heard it ring four times before it stopped — no pick-up. No movement from beyond the door.

"Kanato-san?" Rou's voice carried toward the bedroom, pitched to travel without shouting. "We're here. You awake?"

Silence.

Lauren moved first, crossing to the bedroom door. He knocked — three sharp raps that cut through the quiet. "Kanato. It's Lauren. We're here for practice."

Nothing. Not even the rustle of sheets.

Kuzuha felt something cold settle in his chest. He'd seen Kanato sleep through alarms before, but never like this — never with the apartment this quiet, never with the door locked and the phone unanswered. "Try again."

Lauren knocked harder. "Kanato!"

Still nothing.

Sho was already moving toward the door, his quick mind connecting dots that made his stomach tighten. "Open it."

"It's his bedroom—"

"Open it, Lauren."

Lauren's hand found the handle. It turned. The door swung open with a soft groan, and the morning light from the living room spilled into the dim space beyond.

And then they saw.

The bed was a wreck — sheets twisted, pillows pushed to the edges, the duvet bunched around two bodies in a tangle of limbs and exhaustion. Kanato lay on his back, one arm draped over his face, the other stretched across the mattress where it met Akira's hip. The blanket had slipped dangerously low on Kanato's waist, bunched at his hips in a way that left his bare chest exposed, the muscles of his torso catching the dim light with the sheen of old sweat. Akira was curled against him, face pressed into Kanato's shoulder, one hand splayed across his chest, the duvet barely covering the curve of his spine.

Both of them were naked. The blanket was the only thing between the scene and full exposure, and it hung on Kanato's body like a dare.

For a moment, no one moved.

The room held its breath, and so did they.

*Oh.* The thought came from somewhere distant in Sho's mind, detached and strange. *Oh, this is real.*

He'd known. Of course he'd known. They all had. The hints had been everywhere — Kanato's jacket on Akira's shoulders, Akira's hand finding Kanato's sleeve in the cafeteria, the way they sat together during breaks with a closeness that went beyond friendship. But knowing and *seeing* were different. Knowing was an idea. Seeing was the wet wipes packet on the nightstand, the empty plate with traces of chocolate mousse, the lube bottle beside it, the clothes scattered across the floor — Kanato's shirt, Akira's pants, a sock half-hidden under the chair. The small bucket of water with a soft cloth draped over its edge, still damp, still holding the ghost of the cleanliness it had been used for.

Rou felt heat crawl up his neck. His brain was doing something he couldn't stop — painting the picture the room refused to complete. The chocolate mousse. Kanato's favorite. He'd eaten it, and then he'd— no. Stop. He forced the image down, but it kept rising. The wet cloth. Kanato cleaning Akira up, gentle, thorough, the kind of care that spoke of routine and tenderness. The lube. The way Kanato's hand rested on Akira's hip even in sleep, possessive and protective at once.

Lauren's throat was tight. He opened his mouth to say something — what, he didn't know — and closed it again. The scene in front of him was beautiful in a way that made him feel like an intruder. The way Akira's fingers curled against Kanato's chest, the way Kanato's arm had found its way around him even in unconsciousness, the way their breathing had synced into a rhythm that seemed to say *this is where we belong.*

"Kanato." Kuzuha's voice was quiet, but it carried. He was the only one who hadn't frozen. His eyes were fixed on Kanato's face, watching for any sign of movement. "Kanato, wake up."

The body on the bed didn't stir.

Something shifted in Kuzuha's expression. "He's not responding."

"He's just tired," Rou said, but his voice wavered. "He said Akira's been feeding—"

"He's not responding." Kuzuha stepped forward, crossing the threshold into the room. "Kanato."

Sho's hand found his arm. "We shouldn't—"

"He's not waking up, Sho." Kuzuha's voice was calm, but there was an edge beneath it, the kind that came from knowing what exhaustion looked like when it crossed into danger. "Something's wrong."

Rou moved before he could think, crossing to the other side of the bed. "Kanato-san. Can you hear me?"

Nothing. Not a twitch. Not a breath that changed rhythm.

"I'm going to touch him," Rou said, more to himself than the others. His hand reached out, hesitated, then settled on Kanato's bare shoulder. Warm. Too warm. "Kanato-san."

The moment his palm made contact, the air changed.

Akira's body went rigid against Kanato's. His hand on Kanato's chest curled into a fist, nails digging into skin, and his eyes flew open — dark, wild, unfocused, the eyes of a soldier yanked from a nightmare straight into a war zone. He didn't see Rou. He didn't see the room. He saw a threat, and his body responded before his mind caught up.

A sound tore from his throat. Not a scream — something rawer, a gasp of shock and fear that cut through the silence like a blade.

The movement that followed was so fast it blurred.

Kanato's arm swept Akira behind him, his body rolling to shield, the blanket falling away as he rose. One hand pressed Akira back against the mattress while the other — the other was already moving, reaching under the pillow, finding the cold weight he'd placed there hours ago. The gun came up in a motion so smooth it looked rehearsed, the barrel leveling at the doorway where Sho, Lauren, and Kuzuha stood frozen.

"*Get out.*"

The words came out in a snarl, Kanato's voice stripped of every trace of the easygoing man they knew. His eyes were sharp, dangerous, the amber darkened to something almost black, and his finger was on the trigger — not squeezing, but ready.

Lauren's blood turned to ice. The gun was pointed at him. *At him.* He could see down the barrel, could see the dark circle that meant death, and for one endless second he couldn't breathe, couldn't move, couldn't do anything but stand there and wait for the bullet that didn't come.

"Kanato!" Rou's voice cut through from the side. He had his hands up, palms open. "It's us. It's Rou. It's Lauren and Sho and Kuzuha. We came for practice. You said to come in. Remember?"

Kanato's eyes flicked to him. The gun stayed up.

"We called your name," Rou continued, his voice steady even though his heart was slamming against his ribs. "You didn't wake up. We got worried. That's all. We just wanted to check on you."

Sho had already grabbed Lauren's arm, pulling him back toward the door. "We're leaving," he said, his voice controlled. "We're closing the door. Just—"

"*Wait.*"

Kanato's voice cracked. The snarl was gone, replaced by something fragile. The gun wavered, then lowered, then dropped to the bed as if the strength had left his arm. His free hand was already reaching behind him, finding Akira's shoulder, feeling the tremors that ran through the smaller man's body.

"Akira." Kanato's voice broke. "Akira, it's okay. Look at me. Look at me, baby."

From the bed, Akira made a sound — a choked, ragged inhale that turned into a cough. His breathing was too fast, too shallow, his chest heaving as he tried to pull air into lungs that had forgotten how.

"He's panicking," Kuzuha said from the doorway. His voice was quiet, clinical, the voice of someone who had seen panic attacks before. "Kanato. His breathing."

"I know." Kanato had already turned, his body curving around Akira's, one hand on his cheek, the other splayed across his chest. "I know. Listen to me. Feel my hand. Can you feel it?"

Akira's hand shot up, grabbing Kanato's wrist. His grip was desperate, his nails leaving crescents in Kanato's skin.

"Good," Kanato said, his voice dropping to something soft, something private. "That's good. Now breathe with me. In. Hold it. Out. Come on, Akira. You know this."

The door clicked shut. Rou had pulled it closed, giving them privacy, but the walls were thin, and the silence was absolute.

Lauren leaned against the living room wall, his hand pressed to his chest. "He pointed a gun at me." His voice was hollow, not angry — just stunned. "He *pointed a gun at me.*"

"He didn't recognize us," Sho said. He was pacing, his quick mind already processing, filing, categorizing. "He was still half-asleep. He saw a threat and he reacted."

"That's—" Lauren stopped. Took a breath. "That's not normal."

"None of this is normal." Rou's voice was quiet. He was staring at the closed door, his expression unreadable. "We knew that. We've always known that."

Kuzuha said nothing. He was listening — to the muffled sounds from beyond the door, to Kanato's voice rising and falling in that low, steady rhythm, to the gasps that slowly, painfully, began to even out.

"—Seraph is safe." Kanato's voice leaked through the wood, clearer now that Akira's breathing had quieted. "He's in Nagoya. He called last night, remember? He said the concert went well. He's coming back tomorrow. Seraph is *safe.*"

A pause. Then Akira's voice, thin and hoarse: "Promise?"

"I promise. I swear it. On my life."

Another pause. Longer this time.

Lauren closed his eyes. The fear had faded, replaced by something heavier — a shame that crept up his spine and settled in his chest. They'd walked in on something private. Something fragile. And they'd broken it.

"He called him 'baby,'" Sho said. His voice was strange, almost wondering. "Kanato called Akira 'baby.'"

"Don't." Lauren's voice was sharp. "Don't make it weird."

"I'm not making it weird. I'm just—" Sho stopped. "I've never heard Kanato talk like that. To anyone."

Rou sat down on the couch, his elbows on his knees, his head in his hands. "We should have knocked."

"The door was unlocked," Kuzuha said. He was still standing, still watching the door. "And we did knock. He didn't answer."

"We should have knocked *harder.*"

From the bedroom, the sounds had settled. Akira's breathing was slow, even — the breathing of someone falling asleep, or passing out. Kanato's voice had dropped to a murmur, too low to make out words, just the rhythm of reassurance.

Minutes passed. Five. Ten. The silence in the living room grew heavy, pressing down on them, filling the space between breaths.

Then the bedroom door opened.

Kanato stood in the doorway, barefoot, wearing only a pair of sweatpants that hung low on his hips. His chest was bare, and the light from the living room caught the marks on his skin — scratches down his back, a bite mark on his shoulder, bruises on his ribs where fingers had gripped too hard. His hair was a mess, his face pale, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion and something that looked like guilt.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Lauren's brain short-circuited. He saw the marks — *saw* them — and immediately wished he hadn't. Because now his imagination had *fuel.* The scratches, the bite, the bruises — they told a story he had no business knowing, and his mind filled in the gaps with images that made heat crawl up his neck.

Kanato's jaw tightened. He took a step forward, then another, and then he stopped in front of them and bowed — a deep, formal bow, the kind that meant more than words.

"I'm sorry." His voice was hoarse. "I'm sorry. That should never have happened. I should have—" He stopped. Swallowed. "I'm sorry."

Rou was on his feet. "Kanato, stop."

"I pointed a gun at you. At *you.* You're my friends. You came here to help me, and I—" Kanato's voice cracked. "I don't even remember doing it. I just—I heard Akira and I—"

"Kanato." Sho's voice was firm. "Sit down."

Kanato blinked. "What?"

"You look like you're about to collapse. Sit down, drink some water, and *then* you can apologize."

Lauren was already moving, grabbing a bottle from the kitchen and pressing it into Kanato's hand. "Drink."

Kanato stared at the bottle for a moment, then obeyed, sinking onto the edge of the couch. He took a sip. Then another. His hand was trembling.

Rou sat down beside him, not touching, just present. "Take your time."

The silence stretched. Kanato stared at the bottle in his hands, his thumb tracing the cap in a nervous, repetitive motion.

"Akira's asleep," he said finally. "He was having a nightmare. About Seraph. About the day Seraph got shot." His voice was quiet, flat, the voice of someone reporting facts because feelings were too much. "He woke up in a panic. Thought someone was coming to—" He stopped. "He asked me to make sure no one could get in."

Kuzuha leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. "That's why the gun was under your pillow."

Kanato nodded. "I usually keep it in the bedside drawer. But he was so scared, and I needed him to feel safe, so I—" He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture that left it standing on end. "I put it there. To show him nothing would get past me."

"And the one under Akira's pillow?" Kuzuha's voice was quiet, careful.

Kanato's hands stilled. "How did you—"

"You said nothing would get past you. But you also said Akira was scared. He wouldn't feel safe unless he had his own."

A long pause. Then Kanato's shoulders sagged. "It's empty. They're both empty. I took the bullets out before I put them there. I'm not—I would never—" His voice rose, frantic. "I would never hurt any of you. You know that, right? I would *never*—"

"We know." Lauren's voice was soft. He'd moved to sit on the arm of the couch beside Kanato, close enough to be a presence but far enough not to crowd. "We know, Kanato."

"I'm so sorry." Kanato's voice broke. "I'm sorry. You came here to practice. I was supposed to have everything ready. And instead you had to see—" He gestured vaguely toward the bedroom, his face flushing. "That."

Rou's lips twitched. "The chocolate mousse was a nice touch."

Kanato stared at him. Then, against all odds, a laugh escaped him — ragged, half-choked, but real. "Shut up."

"I'm just saying. Romantic."

"I hate you."

"No, you don't."

Some of the tension cracked. Sho let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. Lauren's shoulders dropped from their defensive hunch. Kuzuha's expression softened by a fraction.

"Okay," Rou said, his voice shifting to something more practical. "So here's what's going to happen. We're going to eat the food we brought, because it's good and we're hungry and you look like you haven't eaten in days. Then we're going to figure out the stream situation. And then—" He paused. "Then maybe you're going to tell us what's really going on."

Kanato's jaw tightened. But he nodded.

The food was laid out on the coffee table — bento boxes and side dishes from the good place near Rou's apartment, the one that used fresh ingredients and didn't skimp on portions. Kanato picked at his food, taking small bites, his eyes distant.

"He's been having nightmares for three days," Kanato said eventually. His voice was low, directed at the rice in his box. "Ever since Seraph left for the concert tour. He doesn't tell me — he tries to hide it. But I can feel him wake up. I can hear his breathing change."

Lauren set down his chopsticks. "The anniversary of the shooting?"

Kanato nodded. "The same day. Seraph almost died. Akira watched him flatline on the operating table. He was nineteen years old, and he watched the person he loved most in the world die, and then he had to beg the people who did it to let Seraph live."

The words landed like stones in still water.

"The feeding last night was supposed to help," Kanato continued. "It usually does. After we're together, he sleeps deeply. But he used up too much energy during the nightmare, and I—" He paused, his hand going to his chest as if checking his own heartbeat. "I gave him everything I had. I didn't realize how much until I woke up."

"You passed out," Sho said. It wasn't a question.

"I think so. I don't remember falling asleep. I just remember being so tired, and then—" He gestured vaguely. "Nothing."

Rou leaned forward. "You need to eat more."

"I know."

"No, I mean it. You're shaking. You're pale. You're running on empty, Kanato. You can't take care of Akira if you collapse."

Kanato's hand tightened on his chopsticks. "I know." His voice was tighter now. "I know, okay? I'm trying."

Sho reached across the table and pushed a piece of grilled fish toward him. "Then try harder. Eat."

For a moment, something flickered in Kanato's eyes — irritation, maybe, or the edge of a defense. But then it faded, and he picked up the fish and took a bite.

The conversation shifted after that. Lighter topics — the tournament schedule, the other teams they'd be facing, the new map that everyone hated. Kanato participated, but his responses were slow, his attention always drifting toward the bedroom door.

It was Kuzuha who finally asked the question that had been sitting in the air since the gun came out.

"Why do you keep a gun in your nightstand?"

The table went quiet.

Kanato set down his chopsticks. "You really want to know?"

"I want to understand." Kuzuha's voice was even. "I'm not judging. I'm asking."

Kanato was silent for a long moment. Then he leaned back, his hand moving to rub the back of his neck.

"I was fourteen the first time someone tried to kill me," he said. His voice was flat, matter-of-fact. "It was a rival clan. They sent someone to my school. I only survived because my driver had been in the military and he took the bullet instead."

Lauren's face went pale. "Kanato—"

"The second time was when I was sixteen. They used a car bomb. I wasn't in the car — my father had called me out of it five minutes before it went off. I never knew if he'd been tipped off, or if it was just luck." Kanato's eyes were distant. "The third time was my own cousin. He tried to poison me at a family dinner. I was seventeen."

No one spoke.

"After that, I started keeping a gun in my room. It made me feel safer. Even after I left the clan, even after I faked my death and came here, I couldn't stop." He looked up, meeting Kuzuha's eyes. "Habit. That's all it is. A habit I can't shake."

Kuzuha held his gaze. "And Akira?"

"Akira keeps one in his drawer too. It's empty. He says it helps him sleep." Kanato's voice softened. "He'd rather get hurt than hurt someone else. So he keeps it unloaded. But he needs it there."

"And Seraph?" Rou asked.

Kanato let out a dry laugh. "Seraph is the dangerous one. He keeps his loaded. Safety off. And he has a knife under his pillow."

"A knife?"

"A foldable one. Custom-made. Black diamond blade — no metal, so it doesn't trigger airport security. Akira gave it to him years ago." Kanato's smile was faint. "It's the most expensive thing Akira's ever bought. He spent almost his entire savings on it because he found out Seraph was carrying around a cheap butterfly knife that kept breaking."

The image was startling — Akira, the quiet one, the one who flinched at sudden movements, the one who needed to be wrapped in blankets and held through the night, spending his savings on a weapon for the man he loved.

"That's..." Lauren started, then stopped. "That's actually really sweet."

"It's Akira," Kanato said simply. "That's just who he is."

The conversation drifted after that. They finished eating, packed away the leftovers, and started setting up for the stream. Rou and Sho offered to help Kanato with his PC setup, adjusting cables and checking the audio levels while Lauren and Kuzuha tested the cameras.

It was only when Kanato disappeared into the bedroom to check on Akira that Rou let out a long breath.

"That was a lot," he said quietly.

Sho nodded. "He's carrying more than he lets on."

"They all are." Lauren's voice was soft. "All four of them. They all act like it's normal, but it's not. None of it is normal."

Kuzuha was quiet, his eyes on the bedroom door. "He loves him, though."

The others turned to look at him.

"Kanato," Kuzuha said. "He loves Akira. That's not an act. That's not a performance. He *loves* him." He paused. "It's the best thing I've ever seen."

The bedroom door opened. Kanato came out, dressed now in a loose shirt and jeans, Akira bundled in his arms — wrapped in the duvet, his face pressed against Kanato's neck, his breathing slow and even.

"He woke up," Kanato said quietly. "He didn't want to be alone."

Rou's expression softened. "Of course. Put him on the big couch — we'll keep the volume low."

Kanato laid Akira down on the largest couch, adjusting the duvet around him. Then he reached for something on the armchair — a long red coat, unmistakably Seraph's, the one with the high collar and the dramatic cut — and draped it over Akira's blanket.

Akira's hand found the edge of the coat, pulling it closer, and his face relaxed into something almost peaceful.

"I'll take a quick shower," Kanato said. "Then we can start."

He was gone for ten minutes. The apartment was quiet, save for the soft sound of Akira's breathing and the distant hum of traffic below.

Rou looked at the sleeping figure on the couch — the way Akira's fingers curled around Seraph's coat, the way his body had relaxed into the familiar scent, the way he looked small and young and fragile despite everything he'd survived.

"He's going to be okay," Rou said quietly. "They all are."

Lauren nodded. "They have each other. That's more than most people get."

And when Kanato returned, hair still damp, eyes still tired but clearer than before, and sat down at his PC with a quiet "ready when you are," the four of them fell into the familiar rhythm of practice, letting the game fill the space that words couldn't reach.
