MEET THE CHARACTERS
Erin Carter
Twenty-eight years old, married to Will Anderson for three years. Works in project coordination at Will's Nashville company, stepping into his role when he takes a six-month (later extended to twelve-month) assignment in Munich. College-educated with a past she's carefully compartmentalized — the party girl who settled down, married well, and built a life around being the kind of woman people approve of. She's competent at work, warm in relationships, and quietly terrified of being perceived as anything less than good.
Will Carter
Thirty years old. Erin's husband, the story's POV character. Brown hair, glasses, clean-shaven, physically fit. A career-driven professional who secures a Munich assignment that he frames as an opportunity for both of them — Erin takes his Nashville role, he advances abroad, they build toward the house and family they've planned. Intelligent, capable, and fundamentally decent at the start. By the midpoint he's none of those things in practice.
Kira Chen
Twenty-nine. Erin's college best friend who reconnects in Act 1. Dating Niko Reeves (photographer). Half-Asian with black hair, fit build, small breasts — never wears a bra as a matter of principle. The friend who never grew up and doesn't think she should have to. She represents the life Erin left behind, and she wants her back in it. She knows everything about Erin's college years — the unedited version Will never got. She's weaponized this knowledge systematically.
Niko Reeves
Late twenties. Photographer building his portfolio. Kira's boyfriend and willing instrument. He's the hand that executes what Kira designs — the photoshoot, the therapy session, the couch scene, the bathroom. Artistic enough to be interesting, patient enough to be dangerous, casual enough to make violation feel like friendship.
