Calling her bluff
"Hey Johnny, what sounds do you make when you're having sex?", Paige asked in a low seductive voice from inside the van. Paige and Marla locked out the boys as a joke. Johnny calmly replied "You wanna find out?", and Paige's demeanor changed. His words were like Spanish fly. Paige kicked Marla out of the van. She had been teasing Johnny all day. Not just with acts. She had wore a skin tight black mini skirt, and a dark green tank top, obviously trying to get male attention that day. When Johnny got in the van they made some small talk and then made love to each other. Both losing their virginity that afternoon while Johnny's parents were still bowling.
Before the van
Lets go back to where it first started. Johnny and his brother joined a bowling league in July at a bowling alley in National City California. Their dad Mitchell was already bowling in a league there. James ended up in the 12-14 year old age bracket where he was teammates with his friend and classmates Marla and Paige and one other boy. Up to this point Johnny had never met the 2 girls before. But he couldn't help noticing Paige especially. She was a cutie, a dead lookalike for a 13 year old Marisa Tomei. She was Italian American with short curly hair, and stood about 5'1. One night Johnnys dad hinted to Johnny he thought Paige had eyes for him, but like the bowling alley employee that shot Paige down he explained while she is attractive she is too young.
The pool (Before the van)
First weekend of September 1992. Last weekend before school starts. Jim, Marla, and Paige are all about to be 8th graders. Johnny a Junior in High School. Jim invites the girls over to their house to swim. Paige is wearing a modest one piece black bikini. But it's hugging her curves just right. The one time she is obviously not trying to show off and she still looks amazing. Paige keeps teasing Johnny about his frame, about his fair skin. But really she's dying for him to make a move. She keeps swimming by him and flicking his knees as he is sitting by the shallow end. She wants him to jump in and do something. But everytime he does jump in the pool he just does some laps. Except the one time he teased her back and grabbed her ankle under water. It sends a jolt through Paige. Hoping he will escalate it. But he doesn't.
The Tension
Back to the day the van happened. Mr and Mrs McHale are back, oblivious to what transpired moments ago. They are all ready to drive to the hotel in San Bernardino. One more day of the adults tournament and the juniors which all the kids are bowling in is Sunday. Johnny and Paige are not ready to get there secret out, but they can't help but staring at each other the whole ride to the hotel.
What Marla Knows
Paige lies on the floral-print bedspread, staring at the ceiling, unable to stop replaying the feeling of Johnny's mouth on hers. Marla is quiet for a long time. Then she speaks, and her voice isn't accusing—it's curious, almost tender. Paige doesn't answer. She doesn't have to. Marla shifts, scoots closer, and says: "Was it good?" Paige feels her face burn, but she nods, just once, barely. Marla says: "I thought so." Paige sits up fast. Marla's expression is soft, knowing, a little sad. "You two couldn't stop looking at each other. Everyone noticed. Jimmy knows. I think his mom knows too, even if she won't say it." Paige's stomach drops. The secret isn't as safe as she thought. But Marla reaches out and takes her hand. "I won't tell. But you need to be careful, Paige. He's your first everything. That matters." Paige can't hold it in any longer. It was the most amazing thing that ever happened to her in her 13 years of life. She spills it all on to Marla.
