The Discovery

Maureen wakes up and starts putting her laundry away. She finds the red panties missing. She worries were they are with them being so provocative and intimate. Were could the red crotchless panties be. Maybe they are still in the laundry room. Did someone from the crew see them and take them? What might one of the guys be doing who them now. She has noticed few looks from the male officers aboard. She remembers Capt Walker had folded her laundry. She was so tired the night before she didn't even think that Capt Walker would have seen the crotchless red panties while folding her laundry. Could she have something to do with them missing? The thought was slightly exciting that the Capt might think about her in more than a professional way. She had purposely only talked about her recent female relationship to see what the Capt reaction might be, She had heard a rumor one about when Capt Walker was coming up as a second mate that she and her Capt may have had a fling. Maureen doesn't know that fling is and ongoing wonderfull relationship with Capt George and his wife Katie. Maureen heads tot he laundry to search for the panty but doesn't find it. Should she say something to Capt Walker? Maureen returnsd to her cabin. She is conflicted what to do. The thought that someone want her panties raises conflicting thoughts but is a little exciting. She thinks of the male officers that might have done it. Mostly though she has a little hope it may have been Capt Walker, She did admire Capt Walker toned athletic body at the beach. she noticed her nipples pressing out of her conservative yet tight swimsuit. She also noticed some pubic hairs peaking out the sides. A nice full bush maybe just like hers?

Maureen woke to the gray light of her stateroom, the ship’s gentle roll a familiar cradle. She stretched, the muscles in her arms and back tight from yesterday’s work, and swung her legs over the bunk. The basket of clean laundry sat where she’d left it, a neat, folded cube of dark work shirts and pants courtesy of the captain. She smiled faintly, pulling the first stack onto her bunk to put away. The methodical task was a morning ritual, tucking order into the small space.

She reached into the basket for the smaller items—socks, the soft cotton tanks she slept in. Her fingers brushed the empty space where the delicate things should have been. She frowned, lifting the stack of shirts to peer beneath. Nothing. A quick, efficient search of the basket confirmed it. The red lace panties were gone.

Her stomach dropped. Not the plain cotton ones. The red ones. The crotchless ones she’d bought on a whim in a port in Lisbon, a secret for herself. They were provocative. Intimate. A flush of heat climbed her neck, followed immediately by a cold prickle of alarm. Where were they?

Maybe they’d fallen out. Maybe they were still in the laundry room, tangled in a dryer sheet or caught under a machine. The thought was a thin hope. She’d been exhausted last night, but not careless. She’d placed them on top of her delicates. They hadn’t just vanished.

Someone had taken them.

The realization landed, heavy and sour. Her mind flashed to the laundry room last night—empty, sterile under the fluorescent lights. But had it been empty when her clothes were drying? Any of the crew could have passed through. She thought of the male officers, the few older hands whose eyes sometimes lingered a beat too long on the back of her work pants as she bent to check a line. She’d noticed. She always noticed. A professional hazard of being a woman on a ship, of being young and having the kind of body that drew glances even in loose fabric.

What would one of them do with them? The image was intrusive, ugly. A rough hand palming the lace. A stupid, lewd joke in the mess. Worse, silent use in a lonely bunk, her scent on the fabric fueling some crude fantasy. Her jaw tightened. The violation felt physical, a greasy smear on her skin.

Then another thought, quieter, slipped through the cracks of her anger. Captain Walker had folded her laundry.

Maureen went still, her hand pausing over a folded shirt. She’d been so tired, so grateful for the gesture, she hadn’t even considered. The captain would have handled every piece. Her fingers would have smoothed these very shirts. She would have picked up the small, personal items. She would have seen them. The red lace. The deliberate, open design.

Could she have taken them?

The question hung in the quiet room, different from the others. It didn’t bring the same greasy dread. It brought a low, curious heat to her belly. The captain. Beth.

Maureen sat back on her heels. She remembered their day at the beach, the way the captain’s conservative black swimsuit had clung to powerful shoulders and lean hips. The way her nipples had pressed against the tight fabric, definite and outlined in the sun. Maureen had noticed. She’d let her gaze drift lower, to the sides of the suit where a few dark, curling hairs had escaped. A full bush, maybe. Like her own.

She’d told Beth about her last girlfriend on purpose, watching the captain’s face for a flicker, a shift. She’d heard the old rumor, a deckhand’s whisper years out of date, about Bethany Walker and her captain a decade ago. A fling, they’d called it. Maureen had stored that rumor away like a spare tool, potentially useful.

If the captain had taken the panties… it wouldn’t be a violation. It would be a message. A dangerous, thrilling one. The thought was slightly exciting. More than slightly. It coiled warm and low in her core, a direct contrast to the cold fear of a male crewman’s theft. This possibility felt like a current, pulling her under.

She needed to know. She dressed quickly, pulling on her work pants and a tank, her movements sharp with new purpose. She left her cabin, the corridor empty in the early watch. The laundry room was silent, the machines still. She checked both dryers, running her hands along the rubber seals, peering into the lint traps. She checked the floor, the sorting table. Nothing. No scrap of red lace.

They were gone. Definitely taken.

Back in the corridor, she hesitated. The captain’s quarters were aft, behind a locked door. Should she say something? Report a missing item? The idea sounded absurd even in her head. “Captain, I seem to have misplaced my crotchless underwear. Have you seen them?” It was an impossible question. It would lay everything bare—her ownership of them, their absence, the unspoken suspicion.

She returned to her cabin, closing the door and leaning against it. The conflict was a live wire in her chest. Someone wanted her panties. The fact itself was a dark, curious thrill. It meant she was seen, not just as a competent second mate, but as a body. A woman. It was a power she rarely acknowledged, one that usually felt like a liability. Now, in the secrecy of this theft, it felt like a key.

She thought of the male officers again. The bosun with thick hands. The engineer who always seemed to be where she was. The fantasy was blunt, impersonal. It left a residue of annoyance.

But the captain… The fantasy shifted. It became specific. Captain Walker’s hands, capable and sure, not just folding laundry but lifting the red lace, examining it. Holding it. Taking it. What would she do with them? The image wasn’t of crude use. It was of possession. Of secret knowledge. Beth, in her private stateroom, alone. Maybe thinking of her. Maybe doing more than thinking.

Maureen’s breath shallowed. She walked to her small sink, splashed water on her face. The cool water did nothing. Her skin felt hyper-alert. She caught her own gaze in the mirror—green eyes wide, cheeks flushed. A wiry, compact woman with a wild mane of red hair and a secret now orbiting her captain.

She remembered the feel of the salt water, the sun on Beth’s skin. The way the captain had looked at her over her drink, a long, assessing look that had felt like a touch. She had admired her. The toned strength of her, the quiet command. The hint of dark hair at the edges of her swimsuit had been a promise of something untamed beneath the uniform.

A nice full bush. Maybe just like hers.

The parallel was intimate, a shared secret of the body. Her own curls were neatly trimmed, a dull copper flame. She imagined the captain’s would be darker, thicker. The thought was vividly arousing. She let her hands rest on the edge of the sink, her knuckles white.

What was the move? A good second mate assessed the situation, considered the variables, acted. The variable was the captain’s possible desire. The action was unclear. Confrontation was too direct. It risked everything—her position, the delicate professional balance. Silence was safer. But silence left the question hanging, left her wondering every time she caught Beth’s eye.

And she wanted to know. The need to know was a physical ache, a tightening low in her belly that had nothing to do with anxiety and everything to do with the slow, hot coil of want. If the captain had them, it changed everything. It meant the glances Maureen had stolen were seen and returned. It meant the current she felt between them on the beach was real, a two-way pull.

She turned from the mirror, her heart a steady, hard drum against her ribs. The missing red lace was no longer just a piece of stolen clothing. It was a thread, pulled taut between her cabin and the captain’s. Someone was holding the other end. She hoped, with a desperate, thrilling certainty, that it was Beth. The conflict wasn’t about what to do. It was about how long she could stand here, in the quiet of her room, before the need to find out became an action she could no longer control.
