The bedroom is quiet in a way the cabin never was. No wind through the gaps in the walls, no creak of old timber settling. Just the hum of the lamp on the nightstand and the soft sound of Elena breathing beside me. The bag sits on the bed between us, heavy with the twelve things she chose with her own hands at the shop, and I can still see the way her fingers trembled as she handed each one to the clerk.
She's sitting on the edge of the mattress, still in her cardigan and plaid skirt, her hands folded in her lap like a schoolgirl waiting for a lesson. She hasn't looked at the bag since we came in. She's been staring at the wall, at the faint pattern of the wallpaper, at anything that isn't the pile of leather and silicone waiting to be unpacked.
"You're quiet," I say.
She doesn't answer. Her jaw works, a small muscle twitching beneath the skin, and I watch her throat move when she swallows.
"Elena."
"I'm thinking."
"About what?"
She turns to look at me then, and there's something in her eyes I haven't seen before. Not the hatred, though that's still there, burning behind the brown of her irises. Not the fear, though that's there too. Something else. Something that looks almost like calculation.
"About the fact that you made me pay for them," she says. "With my own card. My own money."
I nod. "I did."
"Why?"
"Because I wanted you to feel the weight of it." I reach for the bag and pull out the paddle, the first thing she chose, and I hold it up so the lamplight catches the polished wood. "You picked this. You handed it to me. You paid for it with the same card you use to buy groceries." I set it down on the bed between us. "That's not something you can pretend didn't happen."
She looks at the paddle. Her lips part, and I can see her struggling to find words, struggling to understand what I'm doing.
"You want me to remember," she says slowly. "Every time I see it."
"I want you to know that you chose this. Not me. You." I lean forward, close enough that I can smell the faint scent of her shampoo, something floral and soft that doesn't belong in this conversation. "You can hate me all you want, Elena. You can hate me for the rest of your life. But you can't hate me for this. Not when you picked it out yourself."
She stares at me. For a long moment, neither of us moves, and I can see the war happening behind her eyes, the hate and the hunger and the shame all tangled up together like a knot I can't untie.
"You're cruel," she says finally.
"I'm honest." I reach out and brush a strand of hair from her face, and she doesn't flinch away. She doesn't move at all. "There's a difference."
She looks down at the paddle, at the polished wood and the leather-wrapped handle, and I watch her reach out and touch it. Her fingers run over the surface, slow and deliberate, and I can see the way her breath catches, the way her chest rises and falls with the effort of staying still.
"It's heavier than I thought it would be," she says.
"You noticed that?"
"I notice everything." She looks up at me, and there's something sharp in her eyes now, something that wasn't there a moment ago. "That's how I survived nine days in that cabin with you. I notice things."
I feel my lips twitch. "You're angry."
"I'm furious."
"Good." I reach for the bag again, pulling out the riding crop, the second thing she chose. "Angry is better than dead. Angry means you're still fighting."
She watches me set the crop down beside the paddle, and I can see her counting the items in the bag, the ones still hidden inside. Ten more. Ten more things she picked out with her own hands, one by one, each one a confession she didn't want to make.
"You're going to use all of them," she says. It's not a question.
"Yes."
"Tonight?"
"No." I shake my head. "Tonight we use one. The blindfold. The one you chose first."
She blinks. "Just one?"
"Just one." I reach into the bag and pull out the black silk, soft as a whisper, and I hold it up so she can see it. "I told you at the shop. You're going to learn what you want, Darling. Even if you hate it. And that takes time."
She looks at the blindfold. Her fingers twitch in her lap, and I can see her thinking, see the calculation happening behind her eyes.
"You want me to wear it," she says.
"I want you to put it on yourself." I hold it out to her. "I'm not going to do it for you."
She takes it. Her fingers tremble as they close around the silk, and I watch her hold it in her hands, watching the way the lamplight catches the fabric, the way it shifts and gleams like water.
"I've never done this before," she says quietly. "Not like this. Not with someone watching."
"I know."
"I don't know what I'm supposed to do."
"You're not supposed to do anything." I reach out and take her hand, lacing my fingers through hers. "You're just supposed to feel."
She looks at me, and for a long moment, neither of us moves. Then she lifts the blindfold and ties it around her head, her fingers clumsy with nerves, and I watch the silk settle over her eyes, watch her disappear into the dark.
She's breathing hard now. I can see the rise and fall of her chest under the cardigan, the way her hands grip the edge of the mattress like she's afraid she might fall.
"Now what?" she asks.
"Now you strip for me." I keep my voice low, steady. "Slow. Sensual. Like you mean it."
She hesitates. I can see the war happening behind the silk, the way her jaw works, the way her hands hover at the collar of her cardigan like they've forgotten how to move. Then she starts to undress.
It's mechanical at first. Her fingers fumble with the buttons, and she shrugs the cardigan off her shoulders with all the grace of a puppet whose strings are being pulled by someone who doesn't care. The cardigan falls to the floor, and she stands there in her blouse, her arms stiff at her sides, and I can see the way she's holding herself, rigid and waiting.
"Slower," I say.
She unbuttons her blouse. Her fingers are clumsy, and I watch her struggle with the buttons, watch her fumble and hesitate, and when she finally gets it undone, she lets it slip off her shoulders and fall to the floor. She's wearing a plain white bra underneath, and she reaches behind her to unclasp it, and I watch her do it like she's performing a task she's done a thousand times.
The bra falls. Her breasts are bare, and I can see the way her nipples harden in the cool air, but her face is blank. Empty. Like a doll.
"The skirt," I say.
She unzips it. It pools at her feet, and she steps out of it, and now she's just standing there in her panties, her arms hanging limp at her sides, her body on display like a mannequin in a store window. She doesn't move. She doesn't breathe. She just stands there, waiting, and I can feel the frustration building in my chest like a pressure I can't release.
"Stop," I say.
She freezes. Her hands twitch at her sides, and I can see the confusion flickering across her face, the way she tilts her head like she's trying to hear something she can't quite make out.
"Take it off," I say. "The blindfold."
She reaches up and pulls the silk away from her eyes, and I watch her blink in the dim light, watch her eyes adjust, watch her look at me with that same dead expression she's been wearing all night. Like she's already given up. Like she's nothing more than a shell.
"What are you doing?" she asks. Her voice is flat, empty. "Did I do something wrong?"
"You tell me." I take a step toward her, and I watch her flinch, just a little, just a twitch of her shoulder. "Did you do something wrong?"
She doesn't answer. She just stands there, half-naked, her arms wrapped around herself like she's trying to disappear, and I can feel the frustration boiling inside me like something hot and ugly.
"I'm tired," I say.
She blinks. "Tired?"
"Tired of this." I gesture at her, at the way she's holding herself, at the emptiness in her eyes. "Of the way you move like a robot. Of the way you say 'yes, Husband' like you're reading from a script. Of the way you act like you're nothing more than a doll I wound up and set on a shelf."
Her lips part. For a moment, I think she's going to say something, but she doesn't. She just stares at me, and I can see the confusion warring with something else behind her eyes. Something I can't quite name.
"I'm not disappointed," I say. "I'm tired. There's a difference." I take another step toward her, and this time she doesn't flinch. She holds her ground, and I can see the way her breath catches, the way her chest rises and falls with the effort of staying still. "You can hate me as much as you want, Elena. You can hate me for as long as you want. But you're going to stop making low effort in everything you do. You're going to stop acting like you're nothing more than a slave emptied of every emotion she has."
She swallows. I watch her throat move, watch her blink, and I can see the tears gathering in her eyes, the ones she's been holding back all night.
"What do you want from me?" she whispers.
"I want you to try." I reach out and cup her face in my hands, and I feel her flinch, feel the way her whole body tenses at my touch. But she doesn't pull away. She doesn't move. "I want you to let yourself feel something. Even if it's hate. Even if it's fear. Even if it's the darkest, ugliest part of you that you've been trying to bury." I brush my thumb across her cheek, and I feel the wetness there, the first tear she's let fall. "I want you to stop calling me 'Husband' like you're following a command. I want you to call me that because you mean it. Or not at all."
She stares at me. Her eyes are wet, and I can see the war happening behind them, the hate and the hunger and the shame all tangled up together like a knot I can't untie.
"I don't know how," she says. Her voice cracks, and I can hear the honesty in it, the raw, unguarded truth of a woman who's been holding herself together for so long she's forgotten what it feels like to fall apart. "I don't know how to feel anything anymore."
"Then learn." I take her hand and lead her to the bed, and I sit down on the edge, pulling her down beside me. She goes without resistance, and I watch her sit there, half-naked, her arms wrapped around herself, her eyes fixed on the floor. "You're smart, Elena. You're one of the smartest people I've ever met. You can learn."
She laughs. It's a broken sound, hollow and empty, and it cuts through the quiet like glass. "You want me to learn how to enjoy being your slave?"
"I want you to learn how to enjoy being mine." I reach out and take her chin in my hand, tilting her face up to meet mine. "There's a difference. And you know it."
She looks at me, and for a long moment, I can see the hatred burning in her eyes, raw and unguarded. But I can see something else too. Something that looks almost like curiosity. Almost like hope.
"You want me to try," she says. It's not a question.
"Yes."
"Even though I hate you."
"Especially because you hate me." I lean in, and I feel her breath on my lips, feel the way she trembles as I get closer. "I don't want a doll, Elena. I want you. The real you. The one who corrects students in class and fidgets with her glasses when she's nervous and gets that sparkle in her eyes when someone understands her work." I brush my thumb across her lower lip, and I feel her shiver. "The one who's been hiding in the dark, waiting for someone to see her."
Her breath catches. I watch her eyes widen, watch the tears spill over and run down her cheeks, and for a moment, I think she's going to break. I think she's going to shatter right there in my hands, and I'm going to have to pick up the pieces.
But she doesn't.
She reaches up and takes my wrist, and I feel her fingers wrap around it, tight, almost desperate. She looks at me, and I can see the war still raging behind her eyes, but there's something else there now. Something that looks almost like surrender.
"I don't know how," she whispers. "I don't know how to be that person anymore."
"Then let me help you find her."
She closes her eyes. A tear slips down her cheek, and I catch it with my thumb, wiping it away. She leans into my touch, just a little, just a fraction of an inch, and I feel the tension in her body ease, just a little, just enough to know she's still there.
"Okay," she says. Her voice is barely a whisper. "I'll try."
I lean in and kiss her. It's soft, almost tender, and I feel her melt into it, feel the way her lips part, the way her breath catches as I deepen the kiss. She tastes like salt and tears and something else, something darker, something that's been buried for so long it's forgotten what it feels like to be touched.
I pull back, and I watch her open her eyes. They're wet, but there's something alive in them now. Something that wasn't there before.
"Good girl," I say.
She flinches. Just a little, just a twitch of her shoulder, but I see it. I see the way the words land, the way they cut through her like a blade. But I also see the way she doesn't pull away. The way she stays there, looking at me, waiting.
"Now," I say, and I reach for the bag, pulling out the blindfold. "Let's try again."
She takes it from me. Her fingers tremble as she ties it around her head, and I watch the silk settle over her eyes, watch her disappear into the dark. She's breathing hard now, and I can see the rise and fall of her chest, the way her body responds to the loss of sight.
"Strip for me," I say. "Slow. Sensual." I pause. "And this time, I want you to feel it."
She hesitates. I can see the war happening behind the silk, the way her jaw works, the way her hands hover at her sides like she's trying to decide whether to obey or to fight. But then she reaches up, and I watch her hands move to the waistband of her panties.
She's slow this time. Deliberate. Her fingers hook into the fabric, and she slides them down her hips, and I watch the way her body moves, the way she arches her back just a little, the way she lets the fabric fall to the floor and steps out of it. She doesn't rush. She doesn't fumble. She just moves, and I can see the effort it takes her, the way she's fighting herself with every inch of skin she reveals.
She stands there, naked, the blindfold over her eyes, and I can see the way her breath comes in shallow gasps, the way her chest rises and falls with the effort of standing still.
"Touch yourself," I say.
She flinches. Her hands hover at her sides, and I can see the resistance in every line of her body, the way she holds herself stiff and rigid, like she's bracing for a blow.
"I can't," she whispers.
"You can." I take her hand and guide it to her breast, and I feel her flinch as her fingers make contact with her own skin. "I'm not going to do it for you. You're going to do it yourself. And you're going to feel it."
Her fingers tremble against her breast. I watch her palm press flat against the curve of it, watch her thumb find her nipple, and I see the way her breath catches, the way her body responds to her own touch.
"That's it," I say. "Slow. Feel it."
She does. Her fingers move in slow circles, and I watch her nipple harden under her touch, watch her arch into her own palm, and I can see the war happening behind the silk, the battle between what she wants and what she thinks she should feel.
"Now the other one," I say.
She brings her other hand up, and I watch her cup her breast, watch her thumb find her nipple and roll it between her fingers. She gasps, a small, sharp sound, and I watch her hips shift, watch her thighs press together.
"Good," I say. "Now lower."
Her hand slides down her stomach, and I watch the way her fingers hesitate at her navel, hovering there like she's standing on the edge of something she can't name. The blindfold hides her eyes, but I can see the way her mouth opens, the way her breath comes faster, the way the muscles in her belly tighten and release as she fights herself.
"Lower," I say again. Softer this time. Not a command. An invitation.
Her fingers move. They slip through the dark hair between her legs, and I watch her touch herself for the first time, watch her fingers find the wetness that's been building there, and I see the way her whole body jerks like she's been electrocuted. She gasps, a real sound this time, not the mechanical obedience of before. It's sharp and raw and it cuts through the quiet like a blade.
"Oh," she says. Just that one word, and I can hear the surprise in it, the shock of her own body responding to her own hand.
"That's it," I say. "Don't stop."
She doesn't. Her fingers move in slow circles, and I watch the way her hips start to rock, the way her thighs open wider without her telling them to, the way her head falls back and her mouth falls open and she starts to breathe like she's running. The blindfold is still on, and I can see the way the silk darkens where the tears are soaking through, but she's not crying. Not anymore. Something else is happening.
"I feel..." she starts. Stops. Her fingers speed up, and I watch her back arch, watch the way her breasts rise and fall with the effort of breathing, watch the way her free hand comes up to grip her own thigh, nails digging into the skin.
"What do you feel?" I ask.
"I don't know." Her voice is different now. Strained. Almost desperate. "I don't know what this is."
"That's okay." I lean forward, close enough that I can feel the heat coming off her skin. "You don't have to name it. Just feel it."
"Justin," she says. My name. Not 'Husband.' Not a command. Just my name, falling out of her mouth like she couldn't hold it in anymore.
"I'm here."
"I don't want to feel this." But her fingers don't stop. Her hips don't stop. "I don't want to—"
"But you do." I reach out and take her free hand, lacing my fingers through hers. "You feel it anyway. That's the point, Elena. That's what I've been trying to show you."
She's close. I can see it in the way her thighs start to tremble, the way her breath comes in short, sharp gasps, the way her whole body tenses like a wire about to snap. Her fingers are moving faster now, desperate, and I can see the way she's fighting it, the way she's trying to hold back the wave that's building inside her.
"Let it happen," I say.
"I can't."
"You can." I squeeze her hand. "Let go, Elena. Let yourself feel it."
She does. Her back arches off the bed, and I watch her mouth open in a silent cry, watch the way her whole body shakes and trembles, watch the way her fingers press hard against herself as the orgasm rips through her. She makes a sound I've never heard her make before, something between a sob and a moan, and it's the most honest thing she's said all night.
She collapses. Her hand falls away from between her legs, and she lies there, chest heaving, the blindfold still over her eyes, her body slick with sweat. I watch her breathe, watch the way her stomach rises and falls, watch the way her thighs are still trembling with the aftershocks.
I reach out and pull the blindfold off. Her eyes are wet, and she blinks in the dim light, looking at me like she's seeing me for the first time. There's something there now. Something raw and real and terrified and alive.
"That was you," I say. "That was the real you."
She stares at me. Her lips part, and I can see her struggling to find words, struggling to understand what just happened. And then she says it. Quiet, almost inaudible, but I hear it.
"I felt it."
I nod. "I know."
She looks down at her own hands, at the wetness on her fingers, and I watch her process it. The shame and the hunger and the confusion all tangled up together, but underneath it all, something else. Something that looks like the beginning of an answer.
"I didn't think I could," she says. "I thought that part of me was gone."
"It wasn't gone. It was hiding." I take her hand and bring it to my lips, kissing her fingers, tasting her. "And I'm going to find every part of you that's been hiding, Elena. Every single one."
She looks at me, and for a long moment, neither of us moves. Then she leans forward, and I feel her lips brush against mine. It's not a kiss. It's a question. A question I answer by pulling her closer, by deepening it, by showing her that I'm still here.
When we break apart, she's breathing hard, and there's color in her cheeks, color I haven't seen in days.
"Your turn," she says.
I raise an eyebrow. "My turn?"
"You made me feel something." She reaches out, her fingers finding the button of my jeans. "Now let me make you feel something."
Her fingers work the button loose, and I let her. This is new — her taking the lead, her wanting to be the one who undoes me. I've spent nine days peeling her open layer by layer, and now she's reaching for me like she's starving for something she didn't know she was allowed to want.
She pulls my jeans down, and I lift my hips to help her, watching the way her eyes fix on the outline of my cock through my boxers. Her breath catches — a small, honest sound that she doesn't try to hide.
"Look at you," she murmurs, almost to herself. She hooks her fingers under the waistband and pulls. My cock springs free, and I watch her eyes widen, watch her lips part, watch her swallow.
"You can touch it," I tell her. "You can do whatever you want with it."
She reaches out, hesitant at first, her fingertips brushing the length of me like she's testing whether I'm real. Then her palm wraps around me, warm and dry, and I feel her hand start to move — slow, experimental strokes that make my jaw tighten.
"That's it," I say. "Feel it."
She does. Her grip tightens, and she starts to stroke me in earnest, her eyes fixed on what her hand is doing, watching the way my cock slides through her fingers. There's a concentration in her face, a focus that makes me think she's studying me like one of her equations — trying to figure out what makes me work.
Then she leans forward and presses her face against me.
It's not a blowjob. Not yet. She just presses her cheek to my shaft, her lips against the side of it, and breathes. I feel her exhale against my skin, warm and shaky, and I watch her eyes close, watch her just... hold me there, like she's memorizing the feel of it.
She makes a sound — not a whimper, not broken. A moan. Low and hungry, a sound that comes from somewhere deep in her chest. She turns her head and presses her lips to my shaft, kissing it once, twice, like she's saying hello to something she's been thinking about for days.
"Elena."
"I want this," she says, and there's no shame in her voice.
Her lips part around the head of my cock, and she takes me in — slow, deliberate, her tongue pressing flat against the underside as she sinks down. She knows exactly what she's doing. Nine days of this, of being made to kneel and taste me, and she's learned every inch of me with her mouth. The way her jaw relaxes when she takes me deeper. The way her throat opens when she pushes past the point of comfort. The way she looks up at me through her lashes, not submissive anymore, but hungry in a way that makes my breath catch.
She pulls off with a wet sound, her hand still stroking me, and she presses her lips to the side of my shaft again. "I know what you taste like," she says, and there's something almost defiant in it. "I've known for days. I've thought about it — about the weight of you on my tongue, about the way you twitch when I find the spot you like." She runs her thumb over the head, spreading the wetness there, and I watch her swallow. "I've hated myself for wanting it."
"And now?"
"Now I'm tired of hating myself." She takes me back into her mouth, and this time there's no hesitation, no mechanical obedience. She works me with her tongue and her lips, her head bobbing in a rhythm she's learned from watching me react, from feeling the way I tense and release. She finds the spot — the one just under the head — and she presses her tongue against it, and I feel my hips buck involuntarily.
"Fuck," I breathe.
She pulls off, just enough to speak, her lips brushing against the head as she talks. "I want to make you feel the way you made me feel. I want to watch you lose control. I want to know I did that."
She takes me deep, all the way down, her throat opening to take me, and I feel the heat of her mouth close around me, feel the way she swallows, the way her tongue works against me as she holds me there. She stays like that for a long moment, and I can feel her breathing through her nose, can feel the vibration of a low moan in her throat.
"Elena, I'm close."
She doesn't pull off. She looks up at me, her eyes locked on mine, and she keeps going — faster now, harder, her hand working the base of me while her mouth takes the rest. She's not stopping. She's not pulling away. She's taking me to the edge and she's holding me there, and I can see the hunger in her eyes, the need to watch me fall apart.
"I want it," she says, pulling off just long enough to get the words out. "I want you to come in my mouth. I want to taste you. I want to swallow every drop."
That's all it takes. My hand finds the back of her head, not forcing, just holding, and I come with a groan that I can't hold back. She takes all of it, her throat working as she swallows, her eyes never leaving mine, and I feel her lips curve into a smile around me as I pulse in her mouth.
She pulls off slowly, a string of saliva connecting her lips to the head of my cock, and she wipes her mouth with the back of her hand. She looks up at me, and there's something triumphant in her eyes, something I've never seen before.
"Good girl," she says, throwing my own words back at me.
I laugh. It's a broken sound, surprised out of me, and I see her smile — a real smile, small and uncertain, but real.
"That's the woman I've been looking for," I say.
She looks at me, and for a moment, I think she's going to say something. But she doesn't. She just leans forward and presses her lips to mine, and I taste myself on her tongue, taste the salt and the musk and the something else that's been buried for so long it's forgotten what it feels like to be alive.
When we break apart, she's breathing hard, and there's a flush on her cheeks that wasn't there before.
"I don't know what this is," she says quietly. "I don't know what's happening to me."
"I know." I brush a strand of hair from her face. "But you're feeling it. That's all that matters right now."
She looks at me, and I can see the war still raging behind her eyes — the hate and the hunger and the shame all tangled up together. But there's something else there now. Something that looks almost like trust.
I reach for the bag and pull out the blindfold, the black silk, soft as a whisper. I hold it up, and I watch her eyes track it, watch her throat move as she swallows.
"One more time," I say. "With this."
She takes it from me. Her fingers tremble as she ties it around her head, and I watch the silk settle over her eyes, watch her disappear into the dark. She's breathing hard now, and I can see the rise and fall of her chest, the way her body responds to the loss of sight.
"Lie down," I say.
She does. She lies back on the bed, her body open to me, and I watch the way she spreads her legs without being told, the way her hips tilt up, inviting me in. She's not performing anymore. She's not going through the motions. She's offering herself, and I can see the trust in the way she holds herself still.
"I'm going to touch you now," I say. "And I'm not going to stop until you come."
Her breath catches. "Okay."
I lean down and press my lips to her stomach, just above her navel, and I feel her shiver. I kiss my way down, slow and deliberate, and I can feel her muscles tensing and relaxing with each touch. When I reach the dark hair between her legs, I pause, and I feel her hips shift, feel her press up against my mouth, seeking contact.
"Please," she whispers.
I give her what she wants. I press my tongue flat against her, and I feel her whole body jerk, feel her hand come down to grip my hair, pulling me closer. She's already soaking wet, and I can taste her on my tongue, taste the proof of everything she's been trying to deny.
"That's it," I murmur against her. "Let me hear you."
She does. She makes sounds I've never heard her make before — high and desperate and raw, sounds that tell me she's not thinking anymore, she's just feeling. I work her with my tongue and my fingers, finding the spot that makes her arch off the bed, and I press into her, feeling her clench around my fingers.
"Justin," she gasps. "Justin, I'm going to—"
"I know." I don't stop. I keep going, faster, harder, and I feel her body tense, feel her thighs clamp around my head, and then she comes with a cry that fills the room, her whole body shaking and trembling as I ride her through it.
She collapses beneath me, chest heaving, the blindfold still over her eyes. I crawl up beside her and pull the silk away, and I watch her blink in the dim light, watch her eyes adjust, watch her look at me with something that looks almost like wonder.
"That was..." she starts. Stops. "I don't have words."
"You don't need words." I brush a strand of hair from her face. "You just need to feel."
She looks at me, and I can see the tears gathering in her eyes again, but they're not tears of shame. They're tears of something else, something she's been holding back for so long she's forgotten what it feels like to let go.
"I don't know what to do with this," she says. "I don't know what to do with the way you make me feel."
"You don't have to do anything." I take her hand and bring it to my lips, kissing her fingers. "You just have to let it happen."
She looks at me, and for a long moment, neither of us moves. Then she reaches out and touches my face, her fingers tracing the line of my jaw, and I watch her eyes soften, watch the walls she's been building for days start to crumble.
"I'm scared," she says.
"I know."
"I'm scared of what this means. I'm scared of what you're turning me into."
"I'm not turning you into anything." I lean in and press my forehead to hers. "I'm just showing you what was already there."
She closes her eyes. A tear slips down her cheek, and I catch it with my thumb, wiping it away. She leans into my touch, and I feel the tension in her body ease, feel the way she relaxes into me, trusting me in a way she hasn't trusted anyone in years.
"Okay," she says. Her voice is barely a whisper. "Okay."
I pull back and look at her, at the woman who was so sure she hated me, at the woman who's been fighting me every step of the way, at the woman who's finally starting to let go. The bag sits on the bed beside us, heavy with the twelve choices she made with her own hands, but we don't need it tonight. Tonight, we just need this.
"Get some sleep," I say, and I pull the covers up over her. "Tomorrow, we'll go through the rest of the bag."
She looks at me, and for a moment, I think she's going to say something. But she doesn't. She just nods, and she closes her eyes, and I watch her drift off to sleep, her breathing evening out, her body finally relaxing into the mattress.
I lie beside her, watching her sleep, and I think about the twelve choices she made with her own hands. Twelve things she picked out for herself, one by one, each one a confession she didn't want to make. Twelve things that are going to teach her what she wants, even if she hates it.
I reach for the bag and pull out the paddle, the first thing she chose. I hold it in my hand, feeling the weight of it, and I think about what's coming.
But tonight, I just watch her sleep, and I let myself feel the quiet satisfaction of a woman who finally stopped fighting.
The paddle is heavier than it looks. I turn it over in my hand, feeling the grain of the leather, the way it flexes when I press my thumb into it. Twelve choices. She picked this one first, before the blindfold, before the silk rope, before the little glass bottle of lube she'd grabbed like it was on fire. I set it back in the bag and watch her sleep.
Her face is slack now, the tension that lives in her jaw finally released. She looks younger like this, almost peaceful, and I catch myself wondering what she looked like before I took her. Before the cabin. Before the rules. Before she learned to say my name like it was a prayer and a curse all at once.
The house is quiet. Somewhere down the hall, I can hear the soft murmur of Priya and Kira settling in, their voices low and careful, like they're afraid of waking something. They should be. Everything in this house is mine now, including the silence.
I strip down to my boxers and slide into bed beside her, careful not to wake her. But she stirs anyway, her body instinctively tensing at the shift in the mattress, at the heat of another person invading her space. I watch her flinch, that old reflex firing, and I wait.
She doesn't move away.
Slowly, I wrap my arm around her waist, pulling her back against my chest, spooning her. Her body goes rigid for a second — that animal fear, the one she can't fake — and then, like a tide going out, she relaxes. I feel the breath leave her in a long, shaky exhale, and she settles back against me, her spine curving into my chest, her ass pressing against my hips.
I slide my hand up, over her stomach, until it rests on her breast. She's soft here, warm, and I feel her heartbeat under my palm, fast but steadying. I hold her like that, feeling the weight of her, the reality of her, and I realize this is the first time I've held her without taking something from her.
"Goodnight, husband."
Her voice is quiet, but it's not mechanical. Not the flat, recited words she's been giving me for days. There's something in it — a warmth, a willingness, an almost eager edge that catches me off guard.
"Goodnight, wife."
She closes her eyes, and I feel her body melt into mine, her breathing deepening, her hand coming up to rest on top of mine. I lie there in the dark, listening to the house settle, and I let myself feel it. The quiet satisfaction of a woman who finally stopped fighting.
I didn't expect to sleep. But somewhere between the rhythm of her breath and the warmth of her body against mine, I drift off.
The morning comes slow, light filtering through the curtains in pale gold stripes. I wake to the feel of her still in my arms, still in the same position, my hand still on her breast. She's warm and soft and pliant, and for a moment, I just watch her sleep, watch the way her lips part slightly, the way her brow is smooth for the first time in days.
She stirs, her eyes fluttering open. They find mine, and I see the flicker of confusion, then recognition, then something softer. I lean in and press my lips to hers, a gentle kiss, unhurried.
"Good morning, my good wife."
She smiles. It's small, still uncertain, but it's there. "Good morning, husband."
Easier than last night. More real. The words come out like she's been practicing them, like she's starting to believe them.
I sit up, the sheets pooling around my waist. "Today, you're wearing a mini skirt."
She blinks. "What?"
"A mini skirt," I repeat. "I want my wife sexy, ready to tease me. You're going to spend the day reminding me what I own."
I watch her process it, watch the flush creep up her neck. She opens her mouth, closes it, and finally just nods. "Yes, husband."
"Don't be long," I say, swinging my legs out of bed. "Join us in the kitchen."
I pull on my jeans and a shirt from the dresser, running a hand through my hair. Behind me, I hear the rustle of sheets, the soft pad of her feet on the floor. I don't look back. I know she'll do what she's told.
The kitchen smells like coffee and butter, and Priya is at the stove, a spatula in one hand and a pan in the other, scrambling eggs with the ease of someone who's done it a thousand times. She's wearing one of my shirts, oversized and hanging off her shoulder, and she looks up when I walk in, a smile spreading across her face.
"Morning, babe."
"Morning, Honey." I pour myself a cup of coffee and lean against the counter, watching her work. "Smells good."
"I make a mean scramble," she says, winking. "My mom taught me. She said any woman worth her salt should know how to feed a man."
I take a sip of coffee, letting the heat settle in my chest. Kira is already at the table, dressed in something that leaves very little to the imagination — a thin sundress, straps sliding off her shoulders, the fabric clinging to every curve. She looks up at me with that practiced innocence, the one she thinks hides her intentions.
It doesn't.
"Kira." My voice is flat. "Go back to your room and change."
Her eyes widen. "What?"
"You heard me. I want my daughter dressed properly for me. Not like a —" I pause, letting the word hang. "Not like that."
She opens her mouth to argue, then thinks better of it. I watch her swallow her pride, watch her push back from the table. "Yes, Daddy," she says, and there's a tremor in her voice, something between shame and excitement. "I'm sorry."
She pads out of the kitchen, and Priya catches my eye, a knowing smirk on her face. "You're cruel, you know that?"
"I'm fair."
"You're cruel and fair." She scrapes the eggs onto a plate and hands it to me. "It's a dangerous combination."
I take the plate and sit at the table, and Priya slides into the seat across from me, her own plate in hand. We eat in comfortable silence for a moment, the only sound the clink of forks and the hum of the refrigerator.
Then Kira reappears, this time in jeans and a loose sweater, her hair pulled back. She looks younger, softer, and I nod in approval.
"Better."
"Thank you, Daddy." She takes her seat, and there's a genuine note of relief in her voice, like she's grateful I sent her back. Like she wanted to be told she was wrong.
Elena comes in a moment later, and I have to stop myself from staring. She's wearing a black mini skirt that hugs her hips, a simple blouse that buttons just low enough to tease. Her legs are bare, long and pale, and she moves with a self-consciousness she doesn't quite know how to hide.
She looks at me, and I see the war in her eyes — the shame, the hunger, the confusion. But she crosses the kitchen and stands beside me, waiting.
I stand and pull out the chair beside me, away from Kira, away from the table's natural flow. "Sit here, wife."
She looks at the chair, then at Kira, then back at me. For a moment, I think she's going to refuse. But she doesn't. She slides into the chair, and I push it in for her, my hands lingering on her shoulders for a moment too long.
"Thank you, husband," she says, and her voice is steady, warm, almost eager. She's trying. She's really trying.
I take my seat, and she reaches out, her hand finding mine on the table. I feel her fingers intertwine with mine, soft and tentative, and I squeeze gently.
Kira clears her throat. "Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Do you approve of my clothes for the day?"
I look at her, at the jeans and the sweater, at the way she's trying so hard to be good. "I do," I say. "You look perfect, daughter."
She beams. "Thank you, Daddy."
We eat like that, all four of us, passing plates and pouring coffee, the morning light streaming through the windows. It's almost domestic. Almost normal. A family sitting down to breakfast, the way families do.
But nothing about this is normal. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Under the table, Elena's hand is still in mine. I feel her thumb trace circles on my palm, and I look at her, catching her eye. She blushes and looks away, but she doesn't let go.
"What's the plan for today, babe?" Priya asks, breaking the silence.
I take a bite of eggs, chewing slowly. "We're going to make this house a home," I say. "And then we're going to figure out what happens next."
Kira looks at me, and there's a question in her eyes she doesn't voice. But I see it. We all see it. What happens next isn't about the house. It's about the university. It's about the files. It's about the world waiting outside these walls, the one that doesn't know what I've built here.
"More coffee?" Priya asks, holding up the pot.
I hold out my cup. "Please."
The morning stretches on, warm and full, and I let myself enjoy it. The quiet. The family. The feel of Elena's hand in mine, the weight of her trust, fragile and new.
But I don't forget what's waiting. I never forget.
The coffee's gone cold by the time I push my cup away. Priya's already at the sink, scrubbing the pan with her back to me, and Kira is picking at the last of her eggs, her fork making neat little lines through the yellow. Elena's hand is still in mine, her thumb still tracing those slow circles, and I let her. I let her because it costs me nothing and buys me everything.
"I need to check on the university today."
The words land like a stone in still water. Kira's fork stops mid-scrape. Priya's hands pause over the sink. Only Elena doesn't react, her thumb still moving, steady, deliberate—like she already knew I'd say it.
"The files," Kira says, and it's not a question.
"The files." I stand, pulling my hand free, and I feel the loss of her warmth immediately. "There are eleven left. I've used three. That's not enough."
Priya turns, drying her hands on a dish towel. "What are you going to do with them?"
I don't answer right away. I walk to the window and look out at the street, at the neighbors walking their dogs, at the mailman making his rounds, at the whole oblivious world that has no idea what I've built in this house. "I'm going to make sure no one ever looks too hard at where I've been."
Kira shifts in her chair. "Daddy?"
"Yes."
"What about my mother's file?"
I turn. She's looking at me with those ice-blue eyes, and there's something there I haven't seen before—not fear, not defiance, but calculation. She's trying to read me, trying to find the edge of the game board.
"Your mother's file stays with me," I say. "It's the one that matters most."
Elena's hand, still on the table, tightens. Just a fraction. Just enough for me to see.
"Why?" Kira asks.
"Because it's the one that connects you to her. And you're both mine now." I let that settle, watching the color rise in Kira's cheeks. "I don't keep things that could hurt what belongs to me."
Priya's smirk is back. She leans against the counter, arms crossed. "That's almost sweet, babe."
"It's practical."
"It's both." She tilts her head. "So what's the plan?"
I look at the three of them—Elena with her warring eyes, Kira with her calculating stare, Priya with her easy confidence. "The plan is that I walk onto that campus today, and no one questions why Dr. Vance is on leave, why her daughter looks at me a certain way, or why the director of the university has a new spring in her step."
Elena flinches at that. Good.
"The director," she says, her voice careful. "What did you do to her?"
"What I had to." I meet her eyes. "She's not a threat anymore. She's an asset."
Elena's jaw tightens. For a moment, I think she's going to argue, going to remind me that Evelyn Rutherford is a woman with power and connections and a husband who might ask questions. But she doesn't. She just looks down at her plate, and I watch her swallow whatever protest was building.
"I'm coming with you," Priya says.
"No."
"Justin—"
"No." My voice is flat, final. "You need to take care of Anna, your roommate."
Priya's expression flickers—annoyance, then understanding. "You want me to be the distraction."
"I want you to be the reason she doesn't call the dean, the police, anyone." I walk over and take her chin in my hand, tilting her face up. "Can you do that?"
She holds my gaze, and I see the steel in her. "I can do that."
"Good." I release her and turn to Kira. "You're staying too. Your mother needs company, and I need to know you're both safe."
Kira nods, but I catch the flicker in her eyes—the one that says she's already planning something. I don't call it out. Let her think she has room to maneuver. It'll make the lesson sweeter when it comes.
Elena stands, smoothing her mini skirt. "Husband."
"Yes."
"Be careful."
The words catch me off guard. Not because they're unexpected—because they sound real. She's looking at me with something I can't quite name, something that's not fear and not hunger, something in between.
"I'm always careful," I say.
I grab my keys from the hook by the door and head out into the morning sun. The air is crisp, the streets quiet, and I let myself breathe. The house settles behind me like a held breath, and I feel the weight of it—the three of them, the files, the lies I've spun into a life.
I walk to the campus, taking the long way, letting the morning stretch around me. When I reach the gates, I pause. The lawn is green, the buildings familiar, the students milling about with their backpacks and their coffees and their small, insignificant problems.
I used to be one of them. Invisible. Overlooked.
Not anymore.
