Chapter 4 of 4

Four Hands

Amee feels Ryan shift behind her, his mouth leaving Tessa, and then Marco's hand in her hair tightens once—a signal—and Ryan's voice comes low at her ear: 'Scoot back.' She does, still on her knees, and Marco follows, his cock still wet from her mouth. Ryan settles behind Tessa now, his hand on her hip, drawing her back against him, and Marco kneels in front of Amee again, but this time Ryan's hand lands on the back of Amee's neck and guides her forward—not down to Marco's cock but sideways, onto the rug, onto her stomach, and Marco understands before she does: he shifts around, knees straddling her shoulders, and Ryan lifts her hips and pushes into her from behind while Marco's cock finds her mouth from above. The act this chapter delivers: Ryan fucks Amee from behind on the rug while Marco fucks her mouth from above, Tessa watching; all four come together—Ryan inside Amee, Marco in her mouth, Tessa against Ryan's hand.

Amee didn't stop. She worked Marco with her hand and her mouth and let the sound of Tessa coming ride over her — that high, breaking note, half-laugh, half-sob — and she felt it in her own cunt, a clench with nothing inside it, a hunger that had nowhere to go. Behind her Ryan's breath had gone ragged in a way she knew from twenty years. His mouth was still on Tessa. His hand was still on the back of Amee's neck, thumb moving slow across the knob of her spine like he was counting her vertebrae. Counting her down.

Marco's fingers slid into her hair. Not grabbing. Asking.

"Amee." His voice came from somewhere above her, cracked down the middle. "I'm close. You keep that up and I'm—"

She pulled off him with a wet sound and sat back on her heels, and the cool air of the room hit her wet mouth and made her shiver. Marco's cock stood up from his fist, slick and dark, leaking onto his own knuckles. She looked at it the way she looked at a good proof — the one that makes the whole layout make sense. Then she looked past it, at her husband.

Ryan had come up off Tessa. His mouth was wet to the chin, his hair wrecked where her fingers had been, and he was looking at Amee like she'd just walked in the door after a long trip. Tessa lay back on the rug with one arm over her eyes, chest heaving, thighs still open, the firelight moving over her stomach with every breath.

"C'mere," Amee said to her husband. "Both of you. Sit up."

Nobody argued. That was the thing she'd remember later — how fast the four of them moved when she said a thing, like the room had agreed to let her steer. Marco sat back against the couch, Tessa rolled up onto her elbow, and Ryan came to her on his knees, and Amee put both hands flat on his chest and pushed him down onto the rug and climbed over him.

"You didn't come yet," she said.

"No."

"Neither did he." She tipped her head at Marco. "Neither did she."

"No," Ryan said again, and his hands found her hips, and his eyes — blue, black in this light, she couldn't tell anymore — didn't leave hers.

"Good." Amee reached behind her, found Marco's knee, and said, without turning around, "Tessa. Come get your husband. I want to watch mine."

She heard Tessa laugh — that low, room-filling thing — and heard the shift of bodies on the rug, and then, off to her left, the wet sound of a mouth. She didn't look. She wanted it in her ears and not her eyes yet. She wanted to save it.

Ryan's cock was against her belly, hot and heavy and wet with her own spit from earlier, and she reached down and took him in her hand and stroked him slow, root to tip, feeling the whole length of him slide through her fist. Twenty years and she still knew him like a signature. The vein on the underside. The way the head went darker when he was this hard. The way his jaw locked when she got to the base.

"You want to be inside me," she said.

"You know I do."

"Say it anyway."

"I want to be inside you." His voice came out low and wrecked. "I want to fuck you right here on their rug with ther come still on my mouth."

Amee let go of him and got up on her knees and reached back between her own legs, and she was so wet her fingers slid past her entrance before she found it. She heard herself make a small sound. She hadn't planned it. She put two fingers in herself, all the way in, and pulled them out shining, and held them up where he could see, and then she painted his cock with it — slow, deliberate, the way she'd ink a line on a layout — until he was slick from head to root.

"Then do it," she said.

Ryan sat up and took her by the waist and turned her, easy as a dance move, so she was on her hands and knees and he was behind her, and she looked up and there they were — Tessa on her hands and knees too, three feet away on the same rug, Marco behind her, his hand fisted in her curls. Tessa's eyes came up and found Amee's, and neither of them smiled. It wasn't that kind of look. Tessa's mouth was open and wet and she held Amee's gaze the way you hold a handrail.

"Together," Tessa said.

"Yes."

Ryan pushed into her.

Amee's arms nearly went out from under her. He was thick and hot and her body opened for him in one long, wet slide, and she felt every inch of it — the stretch, the drag, the place deep inside where he finally stopped and her cunt closed around him like a fist making a point. She heard herself moan and didn't bother to shape it. Beside her Tessa made a sound at the same moment, that high caught note, and Amee understood, with a clarity that felt almost funny, that they were being fucked in time. Two men, two wives, one rug, one rhythm.

Then Marco started to move, and Ryan matched him, and the room filled up with the sound of it — skin on skin, wet, the slap of thighs, breath, the fire popping, the little involuntary grunts the men made that they probably thought nobody heard. Amee watched Tessa's tits swing with every thrust and watched Marco's hand tighten in her hair and watched Tessa's face go from composed to open to something private and far away, and Amee thought, with her cheek almost on the rug: I am going to remember this for the rest of my life.

Ryan's hand came down flat between her shoulder blades and pressed. Not hard. Just — there. A weight. A claim. She dropped her chest lower and arched her back and took him deeper and the angle changed and her whole spine lit up like a switch had been thrown.

"There," she said. "Don't stop. Right there."

"I know where it is." She could hear the smile in his voice even through the breath. "Twenty years, Amee. I know where it is."

And he did. He always did. He brought her right up to the edge of it and held her there, steady, unrelenting, and Amee reached out across the rug because she needed something to hold, and her hand landed on Tessa's hand. Tessa's fingers laced through hers immediately, hard, both of them braced on the same scratchy wool, and they held on to each other while the men fucked them and the fire threw their shadows up the wall.

"Look at me," Ryan said.

Amee turned her head and looked back over her shoulder at her husband, and his face was the face she'd married and the face of a stranger and both at once, jaw set, eyes wet at the corners, mouth open. He looked ruined. He looked like a man who'd just found the last thing he didn't know he wanted.

"I love you," he said.

"I know." Her voice broke in the middle of it. "Fuck me like it."

He did. He took her hips in both hands and drove into her, fast and hard and deep, and Amee stopped watching anything and just felt it — the slap of his balls against her, the wet squelch every time he pulled back, the way her own cunt gripped him on the way out like it didn't want to let go. Her tits dragged against the rug. Her knees were going to be raw in the morning. She didn't care. She wanted the marks.

Beside them Tessa went first. Amee heard it — a long, rising, unsteady sound, and then the rattle of Marco's name, and then the wet rhythmic pulse of Tessa's body squeezing, and Marco's low groan as he felt it, and the way he slowed down to ride her through it instead of chasing his own.

Amee watched Tessa come and it pushed her over. She felt it start somewhere behind her navel and spread outward — up her spine, down her thighs, into her hands where she was still gripping Tessa's fingers — and then it crested and she was coming around her husband's cock, clenching on him in waves, and she heard herself say his name, once, loud, into the wool.

Ryan came right behind her. He shoved in deep and stayed and she felt him pulse, felt him empty himself into her, hot and thick, and she bore down on him and held him there and took all of it the way she'd promised him she would. His hands were shaking where they held her hips. She could feel his heartbeat through his cock.

For a while nobody moved. The fire popped. Somewhere in the house a clock ticked. Marco had finished too — Amee could hear Tessa's soft, satisfied laugh and Marco's panting and the wet sound of him pulling out, and then Tessa rolled onto her back and lay there with her hand still tangled in Amee's.

Ryan pulled out slow. Amee felt the loss of him and then felt his come start to slide down the inside of her thigh, and she stayed exactly where she was on her hands and knees, letting it happen, not hiding it, and she heard Marco see it. She heard him go quiet.

"Yeah," Ryan said, to nobody in particular, in a voice like gravel. "That's mine."

Amee laughed — a real laugh, from the belly, the kind that comes out of you when the tension finally cuts. She sat back on her heels and turned around and looked at the three of them. Tessa flat on the rug, glowing, curls everywhere. Marco kneeling, spent, that small scar over his eyebrow creased because he was grinning. Ryan on his knees with his hand still resting on her hip like he'd forgotten how to let go.

"Well," Amee said. "That happened."

Marco got up and came back with a bottle of whiskey and four glasses and a dish towel, and handed the towel to Amee without ceremony, and she cleaned herself up while Tessa poured, and none of them bothered to get dressed. They sat in a loose circle on the rug with the fire dying down, Ryan's arm around Amee, Tessa's head on Marco's shoulder, and they drank and said nothing much and it was the least awkward silence Amee had ever been in.

"Same time next month," Marco said eventually, deadpan, and Tessa snorted whiskey up her nose and coughed, and Amee laughed so hard she had to set her glass down, and Ryan just shook his head and kissed her shoulder.

They found their clothes. Amee's underwear was under the couch. Ryan's shirt was inside out and he didn't fix it. They said goodbye at the door with the easy warmth of people who'd already seen everything, and Tessa hugged Amee and held on a second longer than a normal hug, and said, quietly, into her ear, "Text me tomorrow."

"I will."

The drive home was fifteen minutes of the two of them not talking with the radio off. Amee watched the streetlights slide across Ryan's knuckles on the wheel and thought about how his hand had felt flat between her shoulder blades. He pulled into the driveway and killed the engine and neither of them moved to get out.

"You okay?" he said.

"Yeah." She looked at him. "You?"

"Yeah." A pause. "That was a lot."

"It was." She unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned across the console and kissed him, slow, tasting whiskey and Tessa and herself, and then she said, against his mouth, "Take me inside and do it again."

He did. They made it as far as the hallway wall before his hands were under her dress — the dress she'd pulled back on over nothing — and she was up against the plaster with her legs around his waist and he was inside her again, slow this time, almost lazy, taking his time like the night wasn't over. They finished on the stairs, and then again in their own bed, on their own sheets, in the dark, with the door shut and the house quiet, and it was different from the rug — softer, slower, more theirs — and Amee fell asleep with her cheek on his chest and his hand in her hair.

She woke at seven to the dog barking and Ryan's side of the bed empty and the smell of coffee. She lay there a minute and took inventory. Her knees burned. Her thighs ached in a way they hadn't in years. There was a faint rug-burn on her right forearm. And under all of it, where she'd braced for it — the hangover, the drop, the cold water of the morning after — there was nothing. No shame. No guilt. No little voice telling her she'd done something wrong. Just a wide, warm, settled feeling, like a door she hadn't known was locked had been standing open the whole time.

She got up and put on his old flannel shirt and went downstairs.

"Morning," Ryan said, without turning around from the coffee maker.

"Morning." She took her mug from the counter — the chipped one, the one she always took — and leaned against the counter next to him. "I need to tell you something."

He turned. His face did the thing it did when he was bracing. "Okay."

"I don't feel bad," she said.

He looked at her for a long beat. "Neither do I."

"That's the part I can't get over." Amee wrapped both hands around the mug. "I kept waiting for it to hit me on the drive home. In the shower. In bed. And it just — didn't. I feel good. I feel like I slept with my husband."

"You did."

"I slept with my husband in front of another couple and I liked it." She said it out loud to hear how it sounded. It sounded fine. "I liked watching you with her. I liked it a lot."

Ryan set down his cup and crossed the kitchen and put his hands on her waist and kissed her forehead, and then her mouth, and he tasted like coffee and toothpaste and she thought — not for the first time, but with a new kind of certainty — that she'd married well.

"So what do we do with that?" he said.

"We do it again."

They made love that morning against the kitchen counter with the coffee going cold, and again that night after the kids were in bed, and again on Tuesday, and by the end of the week it had become something like a second honeymoon — the two of them reaching for each other in the middle of the day, laughing about it, wearing each other out. Amee bought new underwear. Ryan left work early on Thursday for no reason either of them admitted to. Twenty years of muscle memory, and suddenly there was heat in it again, the way there had been at the start, but better, because now they knew exactly what they were doing and exactly who they were doing it with.

On the ninth day Amee was sitting at her drafting table with a project open and not working on it, and she picked up her phone and scrolled to the thread with Tessa — a week of light, funny texts, two yoga class recommendations, one photo Tessa had sent of a cocktail that Amee had looked at for a long time — and she typed: So. About that second show.

She hit send before she could think about it. Then she set the phone face down on the table and went back to her layout and pretended to work for eleven minutes.

The reply came while she was refilling her water glass. Three dots. Then a message.

I was starting to think you forgot about us.

Amee read it twice. Then she typed back, one thumb, standing at the kitchen sink with the water still running:

Not a chance. When are the kids at grandma's again?
