Interrupted Vows

As they stand alone for the first time, a frantic knocking echoes at the door. Salma's brother, Dev, bursts in, his face flushed with anger. 'This cannot stand! The village is talking!' he shouts, glaring at Ryan. Salma steps between them, her voice trembling but firm. 'Our vows are spoken.' Ryan clenches his fists, the old confusion returning. 'Leave us,' he says coldly. Dev hesitates, then spits, 'You'll regret this.' The door slams shut, leaving them staring at each other, the outside world now pressing in.
