Now you perfect Live performance day in front of camera Sunita ready her like a professional and reached studio lightmen makeup artist camera men director large bed she is nurvous to see all of them how she performs front of all with a stranger men naked a black tall masculine men is the male performer she is too small in front of him Sunita give her confidence and shooting starts

Maya's mouth is dry, and the words won't come, and behind her the finger doesn't move. It just stays, curled, patient, a question made of pressure. She can feel her own pulse in her hole, wrapped around that knuckle, and she knows her mother can feel it too.

"I don't know," she says. It comes out small.

"You do." Sunita's breath is warm at the back of her neck. "You've known since you were fourteen. You just never said it out loud."

Maya closes her eyes. The fan turns. The sheet is damp under her hip and the wet spot under her belly is cold now, and her cock lies hard and neglected against her thigh, and she thinks about the man they haven't named. She thinks about his weight. His hands. The way a man's hand would feel on the back of her neck, settling, the way her mother's hand settles. She thinks about being under something heavy and not having to hold any of it up.

"I'm going to open for him," she says. "All the way. And I'm going to say his name while he's inside me."

The finger slides out of her, slow, and the emptiness is so sudden she gasps.

"Good girl," Sunita says, and pats her hip twice, brisk, done. "Shower. Then we're going to the studio."

Maya turns her head. "Tonight?"

"Tonight." Sunita is already off the bed, already pulling her silk robe off the hook on the back of the door, already the woman from the phone call, easy and warm and moving. "Nisha texted while you were lying there. They had a cancellation. I said yes."

Maya sits up. Her hair falls over her shoulder in a heavy black curtain and she doesn't push it back. "You said yes without asking me."

"I said yes because you just told me you'd open for him all the way and say his name." Sunita turns at the door, and her face is soft in a way it almost never is, the hazel gone dark and steady. "You're ready, baby. You've been ready. Now go wash the day off you."

Maya showers with her hands flat on the tile, letting the water run down her back, and she doesn't touch herself, not once, even though her cock is still half-hard and her hole still remembers the curl of her mother's finger. She washes her hair twice. She shaves nothing because there is nothing to shave. She stands in the steam and looks at the shape of herself in the fogged mirror — the breasts, the waist, the wide soft flare of her hips — and she thinks: this is the body I'm bringing him. And it doesn't feel like a gift. It feels like a fact.

In the car she is quiet. Sunita drives with one hand and touches up her lipstick at a red light and tells her things in the same voice she uses to order coffee.

"The crew is four people. The director's name is Marco. He'll tell you where to put your hands and where to look. You do what he says, you don't argue, you don't apologize. The makeup girl is Deja. She'll touch your face — let her. The two light guys, you won't learn their names, you don't need to. And the man—"

"What's his name?"

"Doesn't matter what his name is." Sunita changes lanes. "On set he's the talent. In the scene he's whoever you need him to be. Say whatever name you want when he's inside you. That's what it's for."

The studio is a converted warehouse off a street Maya has never had any reason to be on, and inside it is all white light and black cable and the smell of coffee and cold metal. There's a bed in the middle of it, huge, low, dressed in gray sheets that look expensive even from here, and around the bed: two softboxes on stands, a boom mike, a monitor on a rolling cart, a folding table with a makeup kit and a box of wipes and a bottle of water with the cap already off.

Four people. Maya counts them. Marco is a small man in a black hoodie with gray at his temples, and he looks up when they come in and says, "There she is," in a way that makes her feel like an appointment, not a person. Deja is young and pretty and doesn't smile. The two light men are exactly as anonymous as her mother promised. And then there's the other one, standing by the monitor with his back to them, tall enough that the boom mike brushes the top of his head.

He turns around.

Maya has never been close to a man like this. He's black, and he's tall the way buildings are tall, and he's naked except for a robe he's holding closed with one hand, and his shoulders are so wide that the robe hangs off them like it's borrowed. His chest is cut. His jaw is square. He looks at Maya for exactly one second, the way you look at a chair before you sit in it, and then he looks at Sunita and says, "This her?"

"This is her," Sunita says, and her hand lands flat between Maya's shoulder blades. "Maya, this is—"

"Don't," Marco says from the monitor. "No names yet. We'll do intros on camera if we need them. Right now I want her in the robe, on the marks, lights first."

The robe is silk, the color of weak tea, and it's been hanging in a wardrobe bag and it smells like nothing, like it was dry-cleaned for her specifically. Maya changes behind a folding screen and comes out barefoot, and the tile under her feet is cold enough that she stands on the balls of her feet without meaning to, and the robe is short and doesn't quite hide the soft shape of her cock under the silk, and she is suddenly, violently aware of every inch of herself.

Deja comes over with a powder puff and dabs it once on Maya's forehead, once on the bridge of her nose, once under each eye, and Maya flinches at the first touch and then holds still for the rest, and Deja says, "You're shiny, that's all. It's the lights."

"Thank you," Maya says.

"Don't thank me. Thank Marco, he's the one who pays for the powder." Deja snaps the compact shut and walks away, and Maya stands there with the powder cooling on her face and understands she is a piece of equipment that has just been prepped.

Sunita is beside her again, and this time she takes Maya's face in both hands, and her palms are warm, and she turns Maya's head until they're looking at each other and there's nowhere for Maya's eyes to go.

"Listen to me." Her voice is low enough that only Maya can hear it. "You're not the boy who was scared of the mirror. That boy is gone. You are the woman I made, and I made you beautiful, and tonight four people are going to watch you be beautiful on camera, and one of them is going to be inside you, and none of them are going to see anything you don't decide to show them. You understand? You're not the one being looked at. You're the one who decides."

Maya's eyes sting. She doesn't let it go anywhere.

"You're ready, baby," Sunita says. "You're a goddess."

"Positions," Marco calls.

The lights come up, and the room goes white, and Maya can't see past the softboxes anymore, just the bed floating in the middle of all that brightness like something in a dream. She walks to the bed and the tile is cold and then the bedspread is warm under her fingertips, warmer than she expected, and she climbs up onto it and the sheets are soft and the mattress gives under her knees, and she sits back on her heels with her hands on her thighs and her heart going so hard she can feel it in her ears.

The man comes around the bed from her right, and his shadow falls across the sheets and across her lap and across the backs of her hands, and then he's on the bed too, and the whole mattress shifts with his weight. Maya looks up. He's close now, close enough that she can see the small crescent scar on the inside of his wrist, the shape of a nail bite, old and pale, and she thinks, absurdly, of her own body's maps — the little white line on her hip from the time she fell off her bike at eight, before any of this, before she was anyone. She doesn't know why she thinks of it. She thinks of it anyway.

He doesn't say anything. He just reaches out and puts his hand on her hip.

It's heavy. It's enormous. It covers the whole flare of her hip and part of her waist, and the heat of it goes straight through the silk and into her skin, and Maya's whole body wants to flinch and doesn't. She holds still. She holds still and looks up at his face, and his face is doing nothing, and she understands that he is not looking at her as a woman or a man or anything — he's looking at a mark on a bed, and his hand is on that mark, and that is the entire transaction.

His fingers spread once, settling. Finding the bone. Learning the shape of her the way you learn a doorknob in the dark.

"Good," Marco says from somewhere out in the white. "Hold that. And—"

"Action."

The room holds its breath. Maya's breath catches in her throat and stays there, and under the man's hand her hip is warm and her cock is soft and her hole, which was empty an hour ago, remembers being full, and she has no idea what she's going to do next, and she doesn't move, and the man's hand doesn't move, and somewhere behind the lights her mother is watching, and the take begins.

Nothing happens. That's the first thing. The take begins and nothing happens, and Maya understands, standing in the middle of all that white, that she has been waiting her whole life for a moment that announces itself, and this one doesn't. There's no click. The lights don't dim. Marco doesn't say anything else. The boom mike hangs over the bed like a fishing rod and the man breathes, slow and even, and his hand stays on her hip, and she stays sitting on her heels with her palms flat on her thighs, and the whole room waits for her to be the one who moves.

She counts, because counting is something to do. Four people behind the lights. Two softboxes. One bed. The fan somewhere overhead, not a fan — an air handler, the low hum of it, the same hum as the car's engine idling at the red light, and she holds onto the sound the way you hold a railing.

Then his fingers move.

Not much. A quarter inch. The pads of his fingers drag across the silk over her hipbone and then stop, and it is the smallest thing that has ever happened to her, and her whole body reports it. The skin under the silk goes tight. Her nipples, sore from the hormones, drag against the robe and stand up under it, and she can feel them standing up, can feel exactly where the silk touches them now and where it didn't touch them a second ago, and she has to look down at her own chest to confirm it, and when she looks down she sees the shape of them through the tea-colored silk and her ears go hot.

"Good," Marco says, quieter this time. "Keep her looking down. That's the shot."

She keeps looking down. She looks down at his hand on her hip and she looks down at the gray sheet and she looks down at the small pale line of the mattress seam, and she does not look at the man's face, and she does not look at the lights, and she does not look at where her mother is standing, and the not-looking is a kind of work, a muscle, and she holds it.

His thumb moves next. Up, along the curve of her waist, unhurried, and the silk rides with it, gathering in a fold at her ribs, and now there's skin. A strip of her waist, bare to the air, and the air is cool in the studio, and his thumb is not cool at all. He doesn't grab. He doesn't squeeze. He maps. He goes up her side the way someone runs a hand along a banister, learning the wood, and when he reaches the under-curve of her breast he stops and pulls back down, and she makes a sound she did not authorize, a small caught thing in her throat, and the boom mike is right there and it hears it.

"Keep that sound," Marco says. "Don't lose it."

She doesn't know how to keep a sound. She doesn't know where she put it. She breathes in through her nose and her ribs move and his hand moves with the ribs, and she thinks about the powder on her forehead and how Deja said you're shiny, that's all, and she thinks about the robe that was dry-cleaned for her specifically, and she thinks about the little white line on her hip that he has now touched, that he is touching right now, the scar from the bike when she was eight, and she wonders if he can feel it under his thumb and whether he knows it's a scar or just thinks it's a ridge in her.

"Slower," Marco says — to him, not to her. "You're rushing the waist."

The man doesn't answer. He just does it slower, and slower is worse, slower is much worse, because now she has time to feel every finger separately. The index finger above her hipbone. The middle finger at the top of her thigh, near where the robe ends. The ring finger and the pinky spread out across the flare of her hip like they're measuring her for something, and the heat of the whole hand soaks through the silk and into the bone, and she realizes her thighs have gone slick, that she is wet between them, and that the wetness is not from her cock — her cock is soft, lying against her thigh, doing nothing — the wetness is from her hole, from the place her mother's finger was an hour ago, and it is running down toward the sheet, and if she shifts, if she moves even a little, the sheet will show it.

So she doesn't shift. She holds. She holds her weight on her heels and her palms on her thighs and her breath high in her chest, and she watches his hand, and her thighs tremble once, both of them, a small shudder she can't stop, and she presses her knees together to hide it and that just makes the wetness worse, makes the silk stick to her inner thigh, and she freezes with her knees pressed and her hands flat and her eyes down and her whole body doing the one thing she has been trained for two weeks to do.

Then he leans in.

She feels it before she sees it — the mattress dipping, the shadow closing over her, the warmth of him coming close — and she has to fight the urge to look up. She keeps her eyes down. She watches his hand on her hip and then she watches his other hand come across, slow, and land on her knee, and the knee is bare, the robe has ridden up, and his palm covers the whole kneecap and part of her thigh and it is so warm, and he holds her knee and pulls it gently, just an inch, just enough to open her, and she lets him, and the robe falls open at the top of her thigh, and the cool air finds the wet silk there and she feels it, feels the cool on the wet, and her whole face burns but she does not close her knee.

Behind the lights, somebody's chair creaks. Sunita, probably. She doesn't look. She keeps her eyes on his wrist, on the small pale crescent scar inside it, the old nail bite, and she thinks: he was a kid once too. He was eight once too. He fell off something once too. And the thought is not useful, it doesn't steady her, it just sits there, and she lets it sit there, and she breathes out through her mouth, slow, the way her mother taught her to breathe before a take.

"That's it," Marco says. "That's the whole thing. Don't lose the knee. Hold the knee and do the hip again. From the top."

The man takes his hand off her knee and puts it back on her hip, and he starts again, and she knows now what's coming, and knowing doesn't help, knowing is worse, because she can feel the anticipation in her own skin, the way her waist waits for his thumb, the way her ribs lean into the touch before it arrives, and she thinks — with something that is almost a laugh, almost a cry, she doesn't know which — this is what I'm paid for. This. Not the other thing. This. Being touched slowly in front of four strangers and not moving.

And then his fingers find the tie of the robe.

She didn't feel him reach for it. She doesn't know when his hand left her waist. But it's there now, at the loose knot at her side, and it isn't pulling, it's just resting on the knot, and she understands that this is the question, this is where the take ends and the next one begins, and she has one second to answer it, and she answers it with her hands — she lifts her own hand off her thigh and lays it over his, over the knot, and presses down, holding the robe closed, and holds his hand there, and looks up at him for the first time since the take began.

His face is still doing nothing. But his eyes have changed. Just barely. Just at the corners. Like he's seen something he didn't expect to see on a mark on a bed, and he's deciding whether it matters, and the deciding takes a second and a half, and then he nods, once, small, and leaves the knot alone.

"Cut," Marco says. "Reset. Same marks. And Maya — " and she turns her head toward the sound of her own name coming out of the white, " — whatever you just did with your hand, do that again."
