The Mirror's Truth

I stand in front of Elena's full-length mirror, my reflection a cascade of black hair and curves, my mother behind me with her hands on my bare shoulders. She turns me to face her, her hazel eyes tracing the lines of my body, and then her fingers find the hem of my silk robe. 'Lesson one,' she murmurs, sliding the robe off my shoulders, 'is learning how your body responds to being seen.' Her hand cups my breast, thumb circling my nipple, and I feel the heat rise from my belly as she guides me backward onto her bed. The act this chapter delivers: Elena lays Maya back on the silk sheets, parts her thighs, and takes Maya's small, soft penis into her mouth, sucking and licking until Maya comes with a gasp, her mother swallowing every drop.

S

Sunita's mouth was on her throat, and Maya's whole body had gone strange — not the familiar strangeness of standing before the mirror, cataloguing the numbers, the 38s and the 26, the hips that had finally come in round and wide after four years of needles and pills and patience. This was different. This was the mirror turning around. This was being looked at from the inside out.

Her mother's thumb circled once more, slow, deliberate, and Maya felt it somewhere behind her sternum — a pull, a tightness, a heat that had nothing to do with the nipple itself and everything to do with the fact that someone was watching the nipple darken and peak and know exactly what they were doing to it.

"You're holding your breath," Sunita said against her skin. Not a question.

Maya let it out. It came ragged.

"I always hold my breath."

"I know. Since you were fourteen." Sunita lifted her head, and her hazel eyes were level with Maya's, close enough that Maya could see the fine lines at the corners the camera never caught anymore. "You held it the night you came out of the shower and I was in the hallway. You held it so long you went gray at the lips. I thought you were going to faint."

"I thought you were going to scream."

"I was going to." Sunita's mouth curved. "Then I looked at your face — that face — and I thought, no. That's not a boy. That's a girl who's been hiding in a boy's towel."

Maya's eyes stung. She turned her head, and the ceiling came into view — the water stain shaped like a bird taking off, wings spread, frozen mid-flight. She had stared at that stain through every hard conversation of her adolescence. It had witnessed her first bra, her first shave, her first heel, her first crying jag over a boy who'd texted so what are you, actually and never texted again.

Sunita's hand left her breast. Maya felt the loss like a dropped weight — then felt both hands slide down her ribs, over the dip of her waist, and settle on the wide flare of her hips. Holding her there. Framing her.

"Look at me."

Maya looked.

"You have my hips," Sunita said. "You have my waist. You have your father's mouth and my mother's eyes, and you have something neither of us had at eighteen — you have the body you asked for. Do you understand what that means? Most women spend their whole lives at war with this. You built yours from scratch."

"I didn't build it alone."

"No. You didn't." Sunita's thumbs pressed into the soft hollow above Maya's hip bones. "Which is why I get to teach you what it's for."

She moved. Maya didn't see it coming — one moment her mother was kneeling over her, the next she had shifted down the bed, her long dark hair dragging across Maya's stomach, and her hands were on Maya's knees, easing them apart.

Maya's hand shot down. Caught her mother's wrist. The bangles on Maya's arm clinked — a small bright sound in the dim room, absurdly domestic, like a kitchen, like morning.

"Wait."

Sunita stopped. Didn't pull. Didn't push. Just waited, her wrist loose in Maya's grip, her eyes going up the length of Maya's body to her face.

"I don't—" Maya's voice cracked. She touched her own long nails to her collarbone, a nervous habit, the polish catching the lamplight. "It's small. It's — I know it's small. I've seen the videos. I've seen what men — what the men in your videos—"

"Stop."

Maya stopped.

"You've been watching my work."

"Everyone watches your work."

"That's not what I asked."

Silence. The ceiling bird. The water in the pipe down the hall, a neighbor's shower running.

"Yes," Maya said, very quietly. "I watched. I wanted to see what you did. I wanted to know how you — how you make them look at you like that."

Sunita's expression didn't change, but something behind it did — a flicker, there and gone, like a light in a window across the street. She turned her wrist in Maya's grip and laced their fingers together instead.

"Those men," she said, "paid for a fantasy. They didn't pay for me. You want to know the difference between being looked at and being seen?"

"Yes."

"Being looked at is a transaction. Being seen is a risk." She squeezed Maya's fingers. "You've spent four years looking at yourself in that mirror. Tonight you're going to let someone see you. That's the whole lesson. That's the only lesson."

Maya's grip loosened. Her fingers opened.

Sunita settled between her thighs.

Maya looked down the length of her own body — the long black hair fanned across the silk, the full breasts fallen to either side of her ribs, the waist that dipped to nothing, the hips that flared wide and round and smooth, hairless from the laser sessions she'd saved for, the ankle-strap heels still on, still buckled, the black straps cutting across her insteps. And there, nestled in the small dark triangle between her thighs, the soft little cock she'd never once been able to make herself call anything else. Small. Unfinished. The one part of her the hormones had shrunk instead of grown.

She wanted to close her legs. She wanted to cover it with both hands. She wanted to say not that, anything but that.

She didn't.

Sunita looked at it the way she looked at everything — with full attention, no flinch, no hurry. Then she looked up at Maya, and her face was doing something Maya had never seen it do before. Not the escort's face. Not the mother's face. Something underneath both.

"You're beautiful," Sunita said. "Every inch of you. Including this."

Then she lowered her head.

Maya's whole body seized. Not from the touch — from the looking. Her mother's mouth was on her, warm and wet and impossibly soft, and Maya's hips jerked up off the silk before she could stop them, and Sunita's hands came down on her hip bones and pressed her flat again, easy and firm, holding her there like a page under a palm.

"Oh," Maya said. Just that. A small high sound that didn't sound like her.

Sunita's tongue moved. Slow. Along the underside, where the skin was thinnest, where every nerve had been waiting eighteen years for someone to notice it existed. Maya's hands flew up and grabbed the sheets. Then one hand found her own hair and twisted into it, the long black length of it, and she pulled, hard, because she didn't know what else to do with her hands.

Her mother's mouth took her in — all of her, easily, because there wasn't much to take. The heat of it. The wet. The suction that came and went in a rhythm Maya couldn't predict and couldn't brace for. Every time she thought she'd found the pattern, Sunita changed it — a flick of the tongue, a long slow drag, a pause to breathe warm air across the wet skin that made Maya's thighs shake.

Maya looked down.

Her mother's dark head between her thighs. Her own body spread out on the silk like something painted. The heels. The bangles still ringing faintly every time her wrist moved. The long nails digging crescents into her own palm. She had dreamed this — not this, not exactly this, but being wanted, being touched by someone who knew every inch of the territory because they'd watched it grow.

Sunita's hand slid up her stomach, over her ribs, and found her breast again. Cupped it. Weighed it. Her thumb found the nipple and rolled it, and Maya felt the two sensations — mouth below, hand above — connect somewhere in the middle of her body, a circuit closing.

"Breathe," Sunita said, lifting her mouth just long enough to say it. "You're holding it again."

Maya breathed. It came out as a sound.

Sunita went back down.

Time went strange. Maya lost the thread of it — the ceiling bird, the water in the pipe, all of it gone, just the wet heat and the slow build low in her belly, a pressure that wasn't quite pleasure yet, that was something closer to grief, to four years of waiting, to the boy she'd never been finally being laid to rest under her mother's tongue. Her heels dug into the mattress. One of them slipped off the edge of the bed and hung there, the strap still buckled, the black leather catching the light.

She was close. She could feel it coming — a tightening, a drawing-up, her thighs starting to close on instinct and her mother's hands holding them open, holding her seen, not letting her hide even now.

"Mom—"

"I know."

"I'm going to—"

"I know. Let me see it."

That did it. Not the mouth — the words. Let me see it. Maya came with a gasp that turned into a sound she'd never made before, high and broken and entirely hers, her whole body curling up off the bed, her hand fisting in her own hair, her heels scrabbling for purchase on the silk. Sunita stayed with her, mouth soft and steady, taking everything, swallowing, her hand still cupping Maya's breast like she was holding something precious and breakable.

Maya came down slowly. In pieces. Her breath ragged. Her eyes wet and she didn't know when that had happened.

Sunita lifted her head. Wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist — an ordinary gesture, almost careless, the gesture of a woman who had done this a thousand times and would do it a thousand more. Then she crawled up the bed and lay down beside Maya, on her side, propped on one elbow, looking at her.

Maya couldn't look back. She stared at the ceiling bird instead.

"That's the first time," Sunita said. "For you."

Maya nodded. Her throat was too tight for words.

"How was it?"

Maya laughed — a wet, wrecked little laugh. "You're asking me to review you?"

"I'm asking you to feel it. Not think about it. Feel it." Sunita reached over and brushed a strand of black hair off Maya's damp cheek. "Where does it live? Right now. In your body. Where is it?"

Maya closed her eyes. Scanned herself. Her thighs were still trembling. Her breasts ached, both of them, the nipples still tight. Her mouth tasted like nothing. Her hand was still tangled in her own hair.

"My hands," she said finally. "It's in my hands."

"Good. That's where it lives for you. Remember that." Sunita sat up. Her dress was still rucked around her hips, her hair a mess, and she looked — for the first time since Maya could remember — not like a professional. Just like a woman who had just done something enormous.

She reached for the robe on the floor. Maya's silk robe, the one she'd been wearing when this started. She held it up, considered it, then draped it over the foot of the bed instead of handing it over.

"Not yet," she said. "Stay like that a minute. I want to look at you while you're still — open."

Maya lay there. Naked except for the heels. Spread out on her mother's sheets. The ceiling bird watching. Her own come still cooling on her stomach where Sunita's mouth had left a trace of it.

She should have felt ashamed. She waited for it. It didn't come.

What came instead was a question, rising up out of the quiet, and she heard herself ask it before she'd decided to.

"Was it good? For you?"

Sunita looked at her for a long moment. Then she laughed — not the teasing laugh, the real one, low and warm.

"You want to know if I liked it."

"Yes."

"That's the most woman thing you've said all night." Sunita reached over and took Maya's hand off the sheet, turned it palm up, and pressed her thumb into the center of it. "I liked it. I liked watching you stop holding your breath."

Maya's fingers closed around her mother's thumb. Held it. Neither of them moved.

Outside, a car door slammed. The neighbor's shower shut off. The room was very quiet, and the water stain on the ceiling looked, for just a second, like the bird had finally landed.

"Lesson two," Sunita said softly, "is going to be harder."

Maya's eyes came off the ceiling. Found her mother's face.

"How much harder?"

Sunita smiled. She let go of Maya's hand and stood up, and her dress fell back into place around her thighs like it had never been disturbed. She crossed to the dresser, opened the top drawer, and took out something small and flat — a phone. She tapped it once. The screen lit her face from below.

"Hard enough," she said, not looking up, "that I want to record it. For you. So you can see what I see."

Maya sat up. The robe was right there at the foot of the bed and she didn't reach for it.

"You're going to film me."

"I'm going to film you." Sunita turned, phone angled, and the little red dot blinked on. "The way I film everyone. Except this one doesn't go anywhere. This one's just for the two of us."

Maya's hand went to her hair. She touched her nails to her collarbone. The heels were still on her feet, the straps still buckled, and she realized with a small shock that she had never once thought about taking them off.

"Say something for the camera," Sunita said. "Anything. Just your voice."

Maya looked into the little dark eye of the lens. Her mother's voice behind it, warm and patient, waiting.

"Hi," she said. Her voice came out low and strange and hers. "I'm Maya."

The red dot blinked. Sunita smiled, and did not stop recording.
