The Call

Aria presses the phone to her ear and the line opens on the first ring, but Gareth doesn't speak — just breathes, and she hears papers shuffle like he's been waiting for this call. 'Three are in the ground,' She says, and he cuts her off with a question that isn't a question: 'Did you keep the teeth?' She look at Colm's grave, the grass still seamed, and tells him they kept a few items but buried everything else. His silence stretches until she hears him exhale, and then he says the Order will want the location of the grave, and that Armand's fangs will grow back — that she should have kept them as proof. Aria looks at the dark treeline and tell him the proof is in the yard, and he can come see it himself.

The line opens on the first ring, and Gareth doesn't say hello — just breathes, slow and deliberate, papers shuffling somewhere behind him like he's been sitting in a room with the phone already in his hand, waiting for it to ring. "Three are in the ground," Aria says, and he cuts her off before the sentence finishes, his voice flat and quick the way a man talks when he's already done the math. "Did you keep the teeth?" She looks across the yard at the seam in the grass, the one only she can find, the one the porch light doesn't quite reach. "We kept a few things," she says. "The rest is under the lawn." His silence stretches long enough that she can hear the room he's in — a clock, a radiator, the particular hollow of an old building — and then he exhales through his nose, and when he speaks again the flatness is gone and something older is underneath it. "Armand's fangs will grow back. You should have kept them. The Order is going to want the grave, and it is going to want the fangs, and it is going to want a reason you buried three bodies before you called me."

Aria turns her back on the house and faces the treeline, where the dark starts and keeps going. Somewhere past the second pine, Ilsa is walking, and Armand is walking with her, toothless and furious, and the woods are doing what woods do — closing over the trail, erasing the shape of it. "The proof is in the yard," she says. "You can come see it yourself." Gareth makes a sound that isn't quite a laugh. "I'll be there by morning. Do not touch the grave. Do not let your dragon burn anything else. And Aria—" a pause, the shuffle of a page turning, "— the fact that you survivedand are able to make this call is proof that we were right about following you and wrong about exactly how capable you are.”

"What did you expect?" Aria asks. The question lands flat on the line, and she hears him stop moving — the papers, the clock, all of it gone still. "When you gave me the coin and the number and told me to keep my head down. What did you think was going to happen to me out here, Gareth? A vampire, a succubus, a werewolf, a devil, and a thing that came out of the dark on four legs with no blood in it. Coming for me alone at night while my wives were thirty minutes out. What was your professional opinion of my odds?"

The radiator ticks. He doesn't answer for so long she checks the screen to see if the call dropped, and then he does, and his voice is not the emissary's voice anymore — it's the voice of a man who has been carrying a number in his head for weeks and finally gets to put it down. "I expected to read about you," he says. "A body. Something the news would call an animal attack, or a fire, or a girl who went missing off a country road. I have been waiting for that call since the day I stood in your driveway, and every morning it didn't come, I told myself it was because you were smart enough to run, and every night it didn't come, I sat with the fact that you weren't running, and I couldn't decide which of those was worse." Another pause. "Then you called me and told me you'd made a party. Brought the dragon and the deva and the two men. That was the first time in six hundred years I let myself hope about anything, and I want you to understand exactly what I am saying, because I am not a man who says it twice. We have been waiting for someone like you since Tintagel. We have watched a great many people who might have been someone like you. They all died in their yards. You did not. You killed three of the Cabal in your lawn, alone, with your wives still on the road, and then you called me to ask about the teeth."

She looks at the seam in the grass, at the porch light that doesn't quite reach it, at the pine that's still split down the middle from where the Hound hit it. Behind her, inside the house, Sera is moving through the kitchen and Dani is on the stairs, and neither of them is in the yard, and that is the part Gareth doesn't know yet — that she did it with her own hands, in the dark, before they got home. "I'll leave the grave alone," she says. "Come in the morning. Bring a shovel."

"Bring a shovel," Gareth repeats, and there's a pause on the line, the radiator ticking behind him like it's counting something out. When he speaks again the emissary's flatness is gone, and what's underneath it is quieter and worse. "Aria, for what it's worth — I'm glad you came out on top. I still can't quite believe it. You don't understand what they would have done to you. Not a clean death. They would have weakened you first, drained you down to nothing, and taken you alive, and the alive part is the part you don't want to think about. Your lucky those fangs never made it into your neck."

Aria doesn't answer right away. She looks at the split pine, at the seam in the grass, at the porch light doing its small honest work on the yard, and she hears the words land the way a stone lands in still water — all the way down, one ring at a time. "The fangs did make it into my neck," she says, and her voice comes out even, almost conversational, which is its own kind of tell. "Armand got two of them in before I threw him off. Went down my throat like a drink. I took them back out."

Nothing on the line. Then Gareth's breath, slow and deliberate, the sound of a man recalculating a number he thought he already had. "You were bitten," he says. It isn't a question. "By a Cabal vampire. And you are standing in your yard making phone calls." She hears him set something down — a pen, a glass, she can't tell — and when he speaks again there's a new edge in it, not fear exactly, more like a man who has just watched a rule he's trusted for six hundred years fail to hold. "How long ago was this?" Aria looks at the seam in the grass. "Long enough that my throat's already closed."

"Then tell me plainly," Aria says. "Stop talking like a man reading off a card. What's your concern?" The radiator ticks behind him, and she can see him in her head — some cold room in an old building, a man in a good coat sitting very still with a phone against his ear and six hundred years of procedure failing to cover whatever is actually on his face. "You've got the grave, you've got the fangs coming in the morning, you've got your reason. So say the real thing, Gareth. What did I do that's got you sitting up at two in the morning with the phone already in your hand?"

He's quiet long enough that she hears him breathe out through his nose, once, like a man deciding whether to lie and choosing not to. "The bite is my concern," he says. "Not the wound. The wound's closed, you said so yourself, and I believe you. My concern is that Armand fed on you, and he's still walking. A vampire that drinks from something it wants to breed doesn't just take blood, Aria. It takes a marker. A claim. It goes back to its nest carrying a taste of you in its mouth, and the Cabal will read that taste like a signature on a deed. They'll know exactly what you are now. Not a rumor. Not a stadium video. They'll know your blood, which means they'll know you're fertile, which means every old thing in Europe is about to start a conversation about you that we have spent six hundred years trying to keep out of the room. That's my concern. You didn't just kill three of them. You handed the rest a receipt."

Aria looks at the split pine, at the dark past it where the trail is already gone. She thinks about Ilsa's bare feet in the wet grass, the ring of dead lawn around her, the way she'd said Dani's name like she was unwrapping something. "Then the receipt's already signed," she says. "So what do you actually want from me, Gareth, because 'don't touch the grave' isn't a plan. Speak plainly. What happens now?"

"Then here's plain," Gareth says, and the radiator ticks once behind him like punctuation. "You get on a plane. Not in three days. Tomorrow. I've had the tickets in my desk since the morning after the stadium, and I've been telling myself I'd send them when the situation stabilized, and the situation has just told me it never will. You come to England, you come to Tintagel, and you come with your whole party, because whatever walked out of your yard tonight is going to walk back in with company. I need you inside the walls before the Cabal finishes counting what you cost them."

The screen of her phone says 2:11. Somewhere behind her in the kitchen, a cabinet closes — Sera, putting the kettle on the way she does when she can't sleep, and the small ordinary sound of it lands harder than it should. Aria looks at the yard, the split pine, the seam that only she can find, and does the arithmetic out loud before she means to. "Five passports. Five seats. On a day's notice, in April, out of O'Hare."

"They're already bought," Gareth says. "The courier will have them at your door by ten. I want you wheels-up by evening — I'll wire the confirmation to your lawyer if that makes it real for you. Aria." He stops. The clock behind him moves on, and his voice goes down an octave, away from procedure. "I have spent a very long time watching people like you die in the dark. I would very much prefer not to watch this one." The line clicks. She stands in the porch light with the phone still against her ear, listening to the dead air, until Sera appears in the doorway with two mugs and a look that already knows the shape of the answer.

The dead air on the line gives way to the yard, and the yard gives way to her legs, and her legs give out somewhere between the porch step and the door. She makes it to the couch by momentum and gravity, folding down into the green velvet with a sound that isn't a word, the phone still clutched in her hand like a stone she forgot to drop. The cushions take her the way they've taken her a hundred nights, and it shouldn't feel like this — this ordinary, this soft — after a night where she put three bodies in the ground with her own hands.

Sera sets both mugs on the side table without a sound and lowers herself onto her heels beside the couch, close enough that her knee presses the cushion's edge. She doesn't ask. She just looks, and then her hand comes up and settles against Aria's cheek, palm warm, thumb finding the line of her jaw and holding it there, steady, like a question you don't have to answer. "Wheels-up by evening," Aria says, closing her eyes against the touch. "Courier at ten. Five passports." Her voice comes out flat and used up. "He says I handed them a receipt."

Sera's thumb doesn't move. She lets the words sit, and then she smiles — small, crooked, the kind that has decided something. "Then we'll bring the receipt," she says. "And the dragon, and the deva, and the two idiots upstairs who've been waiting all night to hear you're still alive." Her hand stays where it is, warm against Aria's cheek, and she doesn't let go.

Sera's hand slides from Aria's cheek to her jaw, tilting it up and to the side, and her mouth finds the small hollow where Armand's fangs went in. The kiss is soft, deliberate, the kind of pressure that says I know exactly what happened here. Aria's breath catches somewhere in her chest and comes back out as a sound — half groan, half moan, low and involuntary — and her hand closes around the edge of the cushion because everything hurts, her whole body is one long bruise, and this is the first thing all night that has felt like relief instead of violence.

Sera doesn't stop. She moves lower, lips dragging down the line of Aria's throat to the other wound — the one the claw tore open, the one Dani's hand had to close because Aria's own magic was too spent to do it. The skin there is newer, tighter, still faintly warm from the healing. Sera kisses it the way you'd kiss a scar on someone you love, slow and unhurried. Aria's head tips back against the velvet, her eyes close, her jaw goes slack, and for a second the only thing in the room is the wet warmth of Sera's mouth and the small, undignified noise she keeps making, because she hurts everywhere and this is the one place that doesn't.

"You're going to have to stop," Aria manages, not meaning it. Sera pulls back just far enough to look at her, thumb still pressed to the healed spot, gold flickering low in her irises. "No I'm not," she says, and leans back in.

Sera's mouth comes back down, softer this time, and Aria's hand unclenches from the cushion. The phone slips off her lap and hits the floor with a small plastic clatter that neither of them looks at. Her other hand comes up — not to push, not to pull — just to find the edge of Sera's shoulder and hold on, fingers curling into the cotton of her shirt like she's checking that something in this house is still solid. Sera kisses the healed bite the way she'd kiss a door she's grateful is still standing: slow, unhurried, lips dragging over the new-tight skin where Armand's fangs went in, then lower, to the other one — the claw tear Dani's hand had closed because Aria's own magic was spent to nothing. Each pass pulls a sound out of Aria that she doesn't bother to swallow. Half relief. Half surrender. Her head tips back against the green velvet and her jaw goes slack and somewhere in her chest the long held thing that's been clenched since the treeline finally loosens one notch.

Sera shifts her weight onto the couch, one knee pressing into the cushion beside Aria's hip, and the porch light through the window lays a thin gold line across the back of her neck. Gold flickers low in her eyes when she lifts her head just enough to look at her. "You keep saying stop," she says, thumb still on the healed spot. "Your mouth says stop. Your hand hasn't moved." Aria's hand tightens on her shoulder, a small involuntary confirmation, and she hears herself laugh — one breath of it, ruined and honest. "My hand's doing the opposite of what my mouth is doing," she says. "That's the whole problem." Sera leans back in, and this time Aria's hand slides up into her hair without being told, fingers threading through the auburn curls, and the phone lies forgotten on the floor between them.

Sera's hand stops moving in her hair. Aria feels it first — the fingers going still against her scalp mid-stroke, then the small tremor that runs through Sera's palm where it's pressed to her jaw, and Aria opens her eyes to find Sera's face a hand's width from hers, close enough to see the gold in her irises go liquid. A tear breaks the line of her lashes and cuts a slow track down her cheek, and another is already waiting behind it. Sera doesn't wipe it. She just looks at Aria the way you look at something you've already lost once and can't believe you got back. "When we came down the road," she says, and her voice is steady in a way that costs her something, "we saw the light through the trees first. Violet. Flickering. I thought it was the house on fire. I told Dani to pull over before we hit the drive, and then the cracks started — like someone taking a sledgehammer to a dumpster, over and over — and Dani said your name and put her foot down, and all I could think was that we were already too late, that whatever was making that sound had already finished with you and we were driving toward the leftovers." She swallows. The tear hits the corner of her mouth and she lets it. "And then we came around the pines and you were standing in the yard with your throat open and your hand still up, and there were pieces of things in the grass, and I have never in my life been that afraid. Not for me. For you. I didn't know anything was wrong when we were driving. I didn't know until I saw you, and by then it was already over, and I couldn't do a single thing."

Aria doesn't reach up to wipe the second tear either. She just slides her hand from Sera's hair down to the back of her neck and pulls her in until their foreheads meet, and they stay like that, breathing the same small wedge of air, Sera's pulse knocking against Aria's thumb where it rests at the hinge of her jaw. "You weren't too late," Aria says. "You were late. There's a difference, and the difference is I'm still here." Sera makes a sound that isn't a laugh and isn't a sob, something caught between the two, and her hand tightens where it's pressed to Aria's cheek like she's checking the bone underneath is still whole. "I know," she says. "I keep knowing it and then forgetting it again. That's what it's doing to me."

Dani comes down the stairs barefoot, Deva-folded to her human shape, and stops at the bottom step when she sees them — Sera on her knees on the cushion, Aria folded into the velvet, two mugs going cold on the side table. She doesn't ask. She crosses the room, sits on the floor with her back against the couch, and takes Aria's ankle in her hand, thumb pressing the small bone there, holding on the way a person holds a rope. Above them the house ticks through its ordinary night — the fridge, the radiator, water in a pipe — and none of them says anything for a while, because the thing that almost happened is still standing in the room, and it doesn't leave just because nobody's looking at it. Sera wipes her face with the heel of her hand, finally, and lets out one long breath. "Ten o'clock," she says. "The courier."

Aria's hand slides up the back of Sera's neck and pulls her down, and Sera comes without a fight — mouth landing on hers hard enough to press her head back into the velvet, one knee already up on the cushion, the other foot still on the floor. The kiss isn't gentle anymore. It's the thing that was going to happen before the tears, before the phone call, before the dead air on the line. Aria tastes salt on Sera's lip and doesn't care whose it is, and when Sera's tongue slides past her teeth she makes a sound into Sera's mouth that she hasn't made all night — not pain this time, not relief either, something with more teeth in it than that.

Sera breaks off just far enough to breathe and Aria follows her up off the cushion, half-sitting, hand fisted in the collar of her shirt so she can't get away with it. "Your body's a bruise," Sera says, and it isn't a no. "I know." Aria kisses the corner of her mouth, then her jaw, then the place under her ear where the pulse is going hard. "I don't care." Sera's laugh comes out ragged and lands somewhere in Aria's hair. "You'll care in the morning." "It's already morning." She gets a hand under the hem of Sera's shirt and finds the warm flat of her stomach, and Sera's breath goes in sharp through her nose. On the floor, Dani's thumb stops moving on Aria's ankle. Nobody says anything, but the room has changed shape around them, and all three of them know it.

Sera pulls the shirt over her head in one motion, cotton dragging through her curls and catching at her wrists, and then it's off and she's kneeling there on the green velvet with her torso bare and the porch light laying a thin gold line across her collarbone. There's a small pale scar under her left breast Aria has never seen before, and a spray of freckles across her ribs that the light turns to copper. Her breath moves her whole chest, slow and deliberate, and she doesn't look away from Aria's face — she watches her watch, the way you watch someone open a gift you chose.

Aria's hand comes up off the cushion before she tells it to. The backs of her knuckles find the warm swell of Sera's breast, the skin there softer than anything has a right to be, and Sera's breath catches at the top of her throat and stays there. Aria's thumb drags a slow line down the outer curve, over the freckles, feeling the fine grain of her, and Sera's head tips back a fraction — not away, just enough to bare her throat — and the gold in her irises goes molten. On the floor, Dani's thumb starts moving again on Aria's ankle, one small circle at a time, and she hasn't said a word but her other hand has found the hem of Aria's dress where it's rucked up on the cushion, fingers resting there like a fact.

"You're shaking," Sera says, and it isn't a tease. Aria looks down and finds her own hand unsteady against Sera's ribs — not cold, not fear, something further down than either. "It's been a night," she says, and Sera's laugh comes out low and ruined and lands somewhere in the hollow of Aria's throat. "Then stop having it for five minutes," Sera says, and takes Aria's wrist in her hand and presses her palm flat against her sternum, over her heart, and holds it there so Aria can feel how fast it's going — faster than hers, faster than it should be for a woman kneeling on a couch in her own living room at two in the morning. Gold light leaks from between their fingers where Sera's hand covers hers, faint, the way her blood shows at the fingertips, and neither of them lets go.

Sera looks at Aria's face, then down at the green velvet, then back up, and something in her jaw sets. She gets up off the cushion in one motion — knee, foot, standing — and her hand comes down and takes Aria's wrist. "No," she says, quiet, not a question. "Not the couch." She pulls, and Aria comes, because her legs have already given out once tonight and there's nothing left in her to argue with a hand that steady. The mugs stay on the side table. The phone stays on the floor.

Dani is up off the floor without being asked, one hand still on the hem of Aria's dress like she's steering a boat through a narrow channel, and the three of them make the stairs in a slow procession — Sera ahead with Aria's wrist locked in her grip, Dani behind with a flat palm pressed to the small of Aria's back, taking her weight at every step where Aria's knee forgets what it's for. The bedroom door is already open. Sera doesn't turn on the lamp; the window does the work, moonlight coming through the blinds in thin bars across the bed, and it's enough, because neither of them needs to see much to know where Aria is.

Sera strips the comforter back with one hand and sits Aria down on the edge of the mattress like she's setting down something breakable, and Dani kneels at the foot of the bed and works the shoes off one at a time, thumb pressing the arch of each foot before she lets it go. Nobody says anything. Sera pulls Aria's dress up over her head and drops it on the floor, and the cool air finds the bruise spread across Aria's ribs — the one from where she hit the pine, the one she hasn't looked at yet — and Sera's fingers trace the edge of it, light, once, and then she pulls the sheet up instead. Dani crawls up the bed on the other side and settles in behind Aria's back, Deva-warm, an arm coming around her waist, and Sera slides in facing her, forehead to forehead, hand flat against her sternum again, over the heart, like she's keeping a door closed. The house ticks around them — the fridge, the radiator, water in a pipe — and for the first time since the treeline, Aria's whole body lets go at once.

Dani's hands find the knot at the top of Aria's spine first — the one that's been clenched since the treeline — and work it with the heels of both palms, slow and deliberate, the way you'd work a rope that's been pulled taut for hours. Dani doesn't hurry. Her thumbs walk down the ladder of Aria's vertebrae, pausing at each one like she's reading a page, and where she presses the muscle gives a little and then gives a little more, and Aria makes a sound into the pillow that isn't quite a word. The Deva warmth in Dani's hands is different from Sera's gold — not heat exactly, more like the memory of being held, and it seeps down past the bruise along Aria's ribs, down into the place where the pine hit her, and the ache there starts to uncoil one knot at a time.

At the foot of the bed Sera has Aria's left calf in both hands, thumbs braced along the shin and fingers wrapped around the back of the leg, and she works upward from the ankle in long strokes, pressing the flat of her palm into the muscle and dragging it toward the knee. The right calf gets the same, then the back of the thigh, and Sera's knuckles find a spot near the hamstring that makes Aria's whole leg jerk against the sheet. "There," Sera says, quiet, and stays on it, thumb circling, until the muscle lets go and Aria's foot goes slack in her grip. Dani's hands have moved to Aria's shoulder blades by then, one on each side, pressing them apart — the bruise from the fence post is under her left palm and she avoids it without being told, working the tissue around the edges instead, and Aria can feel the seam of it under Dani's fingers like a fault line she doesn't have to look at.

Nobody speaks. The house does the talking — the fridge cycling, the radiator ticking down the hall, water moving in a pipe behind the wall — and under all of it Dani's palms keep their slow circuit, shoulder to shoulder, down the spine, back up, and Sera's hands keep their long pull from ankle to hip, and the two of them find a rhythm without ever coordinating one, so that Aria is being worked from both ends at once and there's nowhere in her body left to hold anything. Her breath goes deep and even against the pillow, and the last thing she's aware of before it all goes soft and far away is Sera's thumb pressing the arch of her foot, and Dani's hand flat on her sternum through her back, keeping time.

Aria's breathing evens out against the pillow, deep and slow, the last of the tension unwinding from her shoulders under Dani's hands. Sera keeps her thumb moving along the arch of Aria's foot until the muscle goes fully slack, then sets it down on the sheet like she's setting down something that might break. She looks across Aria's sleeping back at Dani, and Dani is already looking back — the same question on both their faces, the same answer.

Sera leans over Aria's still body, careful, one hand braced on the mattress to keep her weight off the bruised ribs, and Dani meets her halfway. Their mouths find each other over the slow rise and fall of Aria's back — soft, unhurried, the kind of kiss that isn't asking for anything. Dani's hand comes up to cup Sera's jaw, thumb brushing the wet track the tears left, and when she pulls back her eyes are bright in the thin moonlight coming through the blinds. "Thank you," Dani says, quiet, so quiet it's barely sound. "For her. For tonight. You held her together and you didn't have to." Sera doesn't answer with words — just turns her face into Dani's palm and stays there, breathing, with Aria asleep between them and the house ticking on around the three of them.

Sera's answer comes without a beat of hesitation, her voice low and steady in the dark. "Yes I did. Of course I had to. She's my wife, and I love her." The words land in the quiet room like stones set deliberately into a wall, and Dani's hand stays where it is, cupped warm against Sera's jaw, thumb resting just under the wet shine the tears left on her cheek. In the thin bars of moonlight through the blinds, Dani's eyes are bright and dark at once, and she doesn't pull back or look down at Aria asleep between them. She just holds Sera's gaze the way she holds Aria's ankle when Aria can't sleep — patient, unguarded, like the answer was never a question.

Dani leans in and presses her mouth to Sera's forehead, a small kiss, unhurried, and when she settles back onto the pillow her hand slides down from Sera's jaw to her shoulder and stays there. "I know," she says, quiet. "I was telling you I saw it. I've been watching you hold her since the driveway, and I wanted you to hear it out loud." Across the mattress Aria shifts in her sleep, one hand curling loosely into the sheet, and neither of them moves to wake her. The house keeps its small honest noises — the fridge, the radiator ticking down the hall, water in the wall — and the three of them lie there in the dark with the weight of the night finally settling, and no one reaches for the lamp.

She wakes because the light has moved. Six hours ago the moon came through the blinds in thin white bars; now it's the sun, low and gold, laid across the foot of the bed where Sera's foot has kicked the sheet loose. Aria doesn't open her eyes all the way. She doesn't move at all. Sera is at her back, one arm draped heavy across her waist, breath slow against the nape of her neck and warm enough that Aria can feel the exact spot where her hair starts. Dani is at her front, Deva-folded small in sleep, forehead tucked under Aria's chin and one knee drawn up between them, and her hand — the same hand that pressed flat to Aria's sternum all night — is still there, palm down on her chest, fingers loose, keeping the same slow time.

Her body reports in, item by item. The bruise along her ribs has gone from a shout to a low ache, and she can breathe past it today. The throat is smooth under her own fingertips when she tests it, no ridge, no seam. Her legs are heavy in the good way, worked and let go. Somewhere downstairs the kettle has not been put on, the courier has not come, and the porch light is still burning its small honest vigil over a yard with a seam in it. She can hear the fridge cycling. She can hear water in the wall. She can hear Dani's breath change the instant before Dani's eyes open, and then Dani doesn't say anything either — just looks at her from three inches away with the same dark, unguarded patience she had at the foot of the bed, and her thumb moves once, small, against Aria's sternum, a question that doesn't need an answer.

Aria smiles. She does it without moving anything else — not her shoulders, not her hand, not the leg Sera has hooked over hers — just the corners of her mouth, private, for no one, while the two women who love her breathe on either side of her and the morning waits at the window with its plane tickets and its shovels and its six hundred years of procedure. She keeps her eyes open. She keeps the smile. Outside, a cardinal starts up in the split pine, and none of them moves.

Dani's hand moves without hurry, palm dragging up the slope of Aria's sternum, over the collarbone, until her fingers find the loose fall of silver-blond hair at Aria's temple. She doesn't grab it. She just lets the strands slide through her knuckles, once, twice, the way you'd sort something delicate you weren't sure you were allowed to touch. Aria doesn't move. Her eyes stay open, fixed on the ceiling, on the pale bars of sun laid across the foot of the bed, and her breath goes shallow in her chest but doesn't stop. Behind her, Sera's arm stays heavy across her waist, and the weight of it is the only thing keeping her from floating off the mattress entirely.

Then Dani's fingers leave her hair and travel down the side of her face — temple, cheekbone, the soft hollow under the eye — slow enough that Aria can feel each knuckle separately. They stop at her throat. Two fingertips settle on the place where Armand's fangs went in, right at the hinge of the jaw, and press, light, feeling for the seam that isn't there anymore. The skin is smooth. Unbroken. Dani's thumb follows the line of her neck down to the hollow of her throat and back up, reading it the way she'd read a page in a language she was learning, and Aria watches her own pulse move under Dani's hand and thinks, distantly, that this is the first time anyone has touched the wound on purpose. Sera's breath is warm against the nape of her neck. The cardinal outside keeps singing. Dani's fingers stay where they are, spread flat over the healed bite, and she doesn't say a word.

Sera's arm tightens across her waist — a slow, deliberate pull, drawing Aria back against the warm length of her — and then her hand slides down, palm dragging over the jut of Aria's hip, fingers spreading to take the curve of it the way you'd take a handrail in the dark. The sheet whispers off Aria's shoulder. Sera's mouth finds the nape of her neck, right where the hair parts, and presses there — not a kiss exactly, more like a word she's decided not to say — and Aria feels the small wet heat of her breath against the fine hairs before Sera lifts her head just enough to speak into the space behind her ear.

"The passports can wait," Sera says, low, the gold in her voice down to a banked thing. "They have until ten." Dani's fingers, still flat over the healed bite at Aria's throat, don't move; her thumb stays where it is, holding the pulse in place like a coin she's flipped and hasn't looked at yet. Above them the house ticks its ordinary morning — the fridge, water in the wall, the cardinal still going in the split pine — and none of it is louder than Sera's hand, which has come to rest on Aria's hip and stayed there, warm and certain, waiting to be told what it already knows.

Aria's mouth moves before her mind catches up, the old syllables rising up out of somewhere deeper than language — linta, háca venya — and she feels the words leave her the way a held breath leaves a body, all at once, no taking them back. The violet comes from everywhere at once, a fine bright mist seeping up out of the weave of every thread touching all three of them, and the fabric goes soft, then goes nothing, dissolving off her skin in a slow curl that the morning light turns to smoke. The sheet over her hip vanishes mid-drag. Sera's shirt, the one she'd pulled back on in the dark, beads into mist at the shoulder seams and runs off her in violet ribbons. Dani's thin tank, the cotton of Aria's own dress, the last warm weight of cotton against her ribs — gone, all of it, until the three of them are bare under the sun with nowhere left to hide and the cardinal still going in the split pine like nothing has changed.

Sera goes still against Aria's back, and Aria feels the exact second the cool air finds her — the small catch at the top of Sera's breath, the way her hand on Aria's hip tightens once and then doesn't let go. The gold in her irises has gone bright and liquid in the low light, and when she lifts her head off the nape of Aria's neck the question in her face isn't a question at all. Dani's fingers are still flat over the healed bite at Aria's throat. They don't move. Her thumb presses once, deliberate, and her eyes come up slow from Aria's collarbone to her mouth, and she holds there, reading the answer before Aria gives it.

"You just did that out loud," Sera says, low, the banked gold in her voice down to a whisper against the fine hairs behind Aria's ear. "In Elvish. In the bed. On purpose." Aria's laugh comes out of her chest ruined and honest, and she doesn't bother to swallow it. "Can't undo it now," she says, and reaches back to find Sera's hip with her own hand, skin against skin, warm and certain and hers to touch, and Dani's thumb finally slides off her throat and down to the flat of her sternum, and none of them reaches for the sheet that isn't there anymore.

Sera's hand slides from Aria's hip to her belly, palm flattening there, and Dani's thumb draws one slow line down the center of Aria's sternum like she's marking the seam of a door. Neither of them asks. They move together the way they worked the knots out of her last night — unhurried, coordinated without a word — and Aria lets them, lets her arms fall open on the mattress, lets her head roll back into the pillow, lets her whole body go loose and offered between them under the thin gold bars of sun.

Sera's mouth finds the hinge of her jaw, then the soft triangle under her ear, then the long tendon down her neck, and Dani's mouth is already at the other side — both of them on her throat at once, Sera from behind, Dani from the front, their lips meeting over the healed bite like two halves of a sentence. Aria's breath goes out of her in a long, unguarded sound, and her hands stay where they fell, palms up on the sheet, because they didn't ask her to move them and she doesn't want to. Sera's tongue traces the line where Armand's fangs went in; Dani's teeth catch the other wound, the claw tear, and press down, gentle, deliberate, as if to say this one is ours now. Aria's hips lift off the mattress an inch and settle back, and she hears herself say something in a language she doesn't have a name for, and neither of them stops to ask what it meant.

Below, Sera's hand slides down through the flat of Aria's belly, and Dani's hand follows its twin down the other side, both converging, both slow. Aria keeps her hands open on the sheet, her eyes on the ceiling, and gives them everything they came for: every breath, every small sound, every place on her body that answers when they find it. Outside, the cardinal sings once more in the split pine. Then the room is just the three of them and the morning light and the soft wet sound of two mouths moving down her body in tandem. Aria closes her eyes and lets it happen, and does not reach for the sheet that isn't there.

Sera's mouth is at the hinge of her jaw, Dani's at the hollow of her throat, and Aria's hands stay open on the sheet because they didn't ask her to move them. The Elvish comes up out of her the way it did before — unbidden, older than her mouth, the syllables shaped by a tongue that has been speaking this language longer than Jason Chance ever lived. Lle naa amin, illi lle. Amin fea, amin hroa, amin indo — and then she stops, because that's the old vow, the one from the character sheet, the one she wrote at a kitchen table in Chicago when she thought she was just making a beautiful woman who would never be real.

She turns her head on the pillow. Finds Sera's eyes, then Dani's, gold and dark, both of them paused mid-motion over her body like two people who have just heard a door unlock in another room. "Not that one," Aria says, in English, so they'll know it's her and not a spell. Then she says it, slow, feeling every syllable land: "Amin naa lle. Lle naa amin. Partake of me — all that you desire. This body belongs to you." She doesn't translate it. She doesn't have to. The violet under her skin has gone warm, and both their mouths are still on her, and neither of them has moved an inch.

Sera's hand is the first thing that answers. It slides down the flat of Aria's belly, past the navel, and stops low — not asking, just arriving — and Dani's hand comes off Aria's sternum and settles over Sera's, both of them resting there, flat and warm and deliberate, on the last piece of Aria that hasn't been given away yet. Above them the cardinal starts up again in the split pine. Sera's forehead comes down to Aria's shoulder, and her breath goes out of her in one long, unsteady pull, and she says, into the skin there, so quiet Aria almost misses it: "Say it again."

"Amin naa lle," Aria says, and this time she doesn't stop to catch it. "Lle naa amin." The syllables come up out of her chest slow and deliberate, each one set down like a stone in a wall, and she feels the violet under her skin answer — a low warm pulse along her ribs, in her palms, behind her eyes. She says it again in Elvish, then again in English, and the English is worse, plainer, truer: "I am yours. You are mine. Take what you want. This body is yours." Her hands stay open on the sheet. She doesn't reach for either of them. She just says it, and lets the words lie in the room where the morning light can find them.

Sera's hand presses lower, down past the flat of Aria's belly, and stops where the hip gives way to the thigh — not asking, arriving — and Aria's breath goes shallow at the top of her chest and stays there. Dani's breath catches against the hollow of her throat, a small wet stutter that Aria feels before she hears, and Dani's hand slides off the back of Sera's and settles on the other hip, both of them holding her at the same latitude, one on each side, flat and warm and deliberate, pinning her to the mattress with nothing but weight and intention. The cardinal keeps going outside in the split pine. Aria lifts her chin an inch — the only movement she allows herself — and bares her throat to the ceiling. Neither of them moves to take it yet, and the not-taking is its own kind of answer.

Sera's mouth comes off Aria's shoulder and travels up the tendon of her neck, unhurried, lips dragging over the healed bite without pausing on it, up to the hinge of her jaw, then down to the flat shelf of her collarbone, where she stops and presses her open mouth there, hot and deliberate, and says it into the bone — quiet, sure, the way you'd sign your name to something: "That's ours now."

Sera's hand leaves Aria's hip and travels down, palm dragging flat over the dip of her waist, the swell of her hip again, and then inward — down the inside of Aria's thigh, slow, the heel of her hand pressing the muscle as she goes. Dani's mouth leaves Aria's throat and follows the same path, lips skipping down the sternum, over the soft skin below the navel, and then the flat of her tongue drags a wet line down the inside of Aria's other thigh. Aria's hands stay open on the sheet, palms up, fingers loose, and her whole body has gone very still except for the small involuntary lift of her hips, an inch, no more, before she sets them back down.

Sera's hand stops at the top of her thigh. Two fingers settle into the crease where the leg meets her body, resting there, not moving, and Dani's breath is warm and wet against the other side, close enough that Aria can feel the air move when she exhales. The violet under Aria's skin has gone low and warm, pulsing faintly along her ribs, and the Elvish is still in the air between them, the words lying where she set them down. Sera's thumb moves — one small half-circle, right at the edge of her — and Dani's tongue finds the soft skin of her inner thigh again, higher this time, and higher. Sera's fingers slide the last inch, through the wet that's already there, and stop. Just stop. Resting at her center, flat and still and deliberate, waiting. Aria's breath catches at the top of her chest and doesn't come back out. Outside, the cardinal goes quiet.

She turns her head on the pillow and finds Sera's eyes, then Dani's, and says it in Elvish because English isn't big enough for what's happening — "Lle naa amin, amin naa lle" — and then the English comes after it, plain and low, the words laid down where both of them can reach them. "Let your touch find my depths. Let your tongues dance upon me." She doesn't reach for either of them. She leaves her hands open on the sheet, palms up, and lets the sentence sit in the room the way she left the others, a door she's already opened and isn't going to close.

Sera's two fingers move first — one slow, deliberate press into the wet at Aria's center, then a second, spreading her open under the flat of her palm. Dani's mouth follows the invitation without a word, tongue dragging up the inside of Aria's thigh one last time before it finds her. The first stroke is long and flat, root to tip, and Aria's hips come off the mattress an inch before she sets them back down, breath leaving her chest in a single unguarded sound. Sera's fingers curl up inside her at the same moment Dani's tongue presses flat and circles. They move like they've been doing this together for years — Sera's rhythm slow and deep, Dani's tongue fast and light at the top of it — and Aria's hands stay open on the sheet, fingers loose, while the violet under her skin goes warm and low and steady and the morning light finds all three of them with nowhere left to hide.

Sera's fingers slide out of her slow, deliberate, and both hands find Aria's hips — Sera's from behind, Dani's from the front — and they turn her together, one motion, coordinated without a word. Aria goes with it, boneless, the sheet gone and the morning light landing full on her back, on the bruise along her ribs, on the long pale line of her spine. Her cheek comes down against the mattress and the pillow smells like all three of them, and the violet under her skin pulses once, warm and low, and settles.

Then Dani's hands are on her shoulders, thumbs finding the knots Sera worked loose last night and pressing them flat again, working outward toward the blades, and Sera's mouth is on the small of her back — open, hot, dragging up the spine one vertebra at a time. Aria's hands stay where they landed, palms flat on the mattress above her head, fingers loose, and she doesn't lift her face off the pillow. Sera's tongue traces the ridge of the bruise along her ribs and stops there, breathing on it, then moves on, down the dip of her waist, over the swell of her hip, and Dani's thumbs press deep on either side of her spine and drag down in long strokes, and Aria makes a sound into the mattress that neither of them has heard from her before — small, wrecked, entirely unguarded.

Sera's hands come down over the curve of Aria's ass, both palms flat, holding her there like a fact. She leans in and presses her mouth to the base of Aria's spine — one long open kiss — then lower, teeth dragging light over the swell of her. Dani's hands slide down off her back and settle on her thighs, spreading them an inch wider on the mattress. Aria's fingers curl into the sheet above her head and hold, and the room goes quiet except for the cardinal outside and the small wet sound of Sera's mouth finding her from behind.

Sera's grip closes on both hips like a claim, thumbs digging into the small of Aria's back, and she pulls — hard, one clean drag that skids Aria's knees up the sheet and brings her center down onto Sera's waiting mouth. The first contact is flat and wet and deliberate: Sera's tongue dragging root to tip, slow, the whole length of her, and Aria's hands claw into the sheet above her head and hold on like the mattress is the only thing in the house that hasn't moved. Dani's mouth is already at her ear, breath hot, and her fingers slide down the crease of Aria's ass, two of them, slick with spit, pressing in at the same moment Sera's tongue curls up into her. Aria's whole spine bows off the mattress — the bruise along her ribs pulls and doesn't matter, the split pine and the seam in the grass and the courier at ten all fall out of the room — and what comes out of her is a sound she hasn't made before, low and long and unguarded, muffled halfway into the pillow because she turns her face at the last second and bites down on the case.

Dani's fingers work in to the second knuckle and curl, finding the spot with the patience of someone who has mapped this body a hundred times, and Sera's mouth doesn't stop — tongue flat and fast at the top of her, then pulling back to drag the whole length of her again, root to tip, root to tip, a rhythm that has nothing to do with hurry. Aria's hips roll back into Sera's face without asking permission, and Sera takes it, hums into her, the vibration running up through Aria's belly and down into her thighs, which are shaking now, both of them, pressed wide on the sheet. Dani's free hand slides up Aria's back and finds the nape of her neck, fingers closing there, holding her down against the mattress the way you'd hold a door shut, and she says, low and even, right at Aria's ear: "Let her. Don't fight it. Let her take it." Aria's answer is not a word. It's a broken, honest noise that starts in her chest and comes out wrecked, and her hips press back another inch, and Sera's hands tighten on her and pull her in deeper, and neither of them lets her go.

Sera doesn't let her settle. Her thumbs hook the crests of Aria's hips and haul — a second pull, harder than the first, dragging Aria's knees another handspan up the sheet and seating her center flat against Sera's open mouth. No preamble now. Sera's tongue goes from long slow strokes to a tight, fast flick right at the top of her, and her whole jaw works against Aria like she's decided this is the only thing she intends to do today. Aria's forearms give out. Her cheek comes down into the wet spot she made on the pillowcase and stays there, and the sound she makes is not muffled this time.

Dani's fingers curl again, deep, and her other hand stays clamped at the nape of Aria's neck — not holding her down anymore, just holding her, thumb rubbing one small circle into the knotted muscle there. "There she is," Dani says, quiet, almost to herself, and then, at Aria's ear, level: "Look at you. Stretched between us and still trying to keep your manners." Aria's hands fist in the sheet above her head, twist, and pull a fold of cotton free of the mattress. Her hips jerk back into Sera's mouth on their own and Sera takes it without breaking rhythm, hums again, and the hum rolls up through Aria's belly and catches somewhere behind her sternum and locks there, tight, a knot that isn't going to come loose on its own. The violet under her skin has gone bright enough to throw a faint glow along her own forearms.

Sera's grip shifts — one hand slides up to flatten over the small of Aria's back, pressing her down, while the other stays locked on her hip and keeps working her in slow, deliberate half-inches onto Sera's tongue. Dani's fingers slide out to the second knuckle and push back in, timed to Sera's mouth, and the two of them have found a shared rhythm without a word passing between them. Aria's thighs are shaking hard now, both of them, and she's stopped pretending she can hold still. She gets one hand loose from the sheet and reaches back blind, finds Sera's wrist, and grips it — not to pull her off, just to hold on to something that isn't the mattress. Sera turns her head under Aria's hand and presses her open mouth to the inside of Aria's wrist, tongue flat on the pulse, and keeps going.

Sera's mouth is relentless, tongue flat and fast at the top of her, then dragging the whole length of her again, root to tip, while Dani's fingers curl deep inside her in a counter-rhythm that has nothing to do with hurry. The knot behind Aria's sternum pulls tighter, then tighter still, and then it doesn't snap — it lets go, slow, a long unspooling that starts in her belly and runs down through her thighs and up her spine all at once, and she comes with her cheek mashed into the wet pillowcase and Sera's name broken into three pieces in her mouth. It lasts, and lasts, waves of it rolling through her the way water moves through a channel, and she doesn't fight any of it. Her hips grind back into Sera's face through the whole long slide of it, and Sera doesn't pull away, doesn't slow, just works her through every wave with her tongue and her hands, and Dani's fingers stay knuckle-deep and steady, holding the rhythm, holding her up off the mattress, holding everything in place until the last tremor runs out of Aria's legs and her body goes fully slack, a boneless, wrecked weight on the sheet, her hand still locked around Sera's wrist.

For a while the room is just breathing. Aria's face is turned flat against the pillow, hair stuck to her cheek, and she can feel her own heartbeat down in her cunt, still pulsing around nothing, the aftershocks small and slow. Sera pulls her mouth away last, presses one last open kiss to the inside of Aria's thigh, and then eases out from under her, sitting back on her heels with her chin wet and her chest heaving and the gold in her eyes gone bright as struck flint. Dani's fingers slide out of her gently, one knuckle at a time, and Dani rolls onto her back beside Aria with a long, unhurried exhale, one arm flung over her own eyes. Nobody reaches for a sheet. The sun is fully up now, laid in warm bars across all three of them, and the house ticks its ordinary morning around them like it doesn't know what just happened in the master bedroom.

Sera sits back on her heels and looks at her — at the long pale sprawl of her across the ruined sheet, the hair stuck to her cheek, the hand still loosely closed around Sera's wrist — and something in her face goes soft and proprietary all at once. She lifts Aria's hand off her wrist and kisses the inside of it, once, unhurried, then lets it fall back to the mattress. Dani has rolled onto her side now, propped on one elbow, and she's watching Aria the way you watch weather come in over a lake — patient, and already certain of what it's going to do. The bars of sun have moved a handspan up the wall. Somewhere downstairs the courier's knock hasn't come yet, and the split pine outside has gone quiet, and none of that is louder than the two of them looking at her.

Dani doesn't reach for her. She just shifts her weight on the mattress, deliberate, and lets Aria see the whole of her — the long slope of her body in the morning light, the soft weight of her breasts, and lower, the thing that's been pressing against her own thigh since before Aria came, flushed dark and slick at the tip and rising off her belly with every beat of her heart. Dani's cock is thrumming, visibly, the vein along the underside jumping in time with her pulse, and she doesn't bother to hide it or name it. She just lies there with her arm behind her head and watches Aria's eyes find it. "Sera got hers," Dani says, quiet, almost lazy. "I've been waiting."

Aria rolls onto her side to face her, slow, the way you move a body that's still humming in every nerve, and reaches out and wraps her hand around the base of Dani's cock without a word. It's hot. It's rigid. It jumps against her palm the second she touches it, and a bead of slick comes up at the tip and runs, and Dani's breath goes out of her in one small, unguarded sound that she doesn't try to take back. Behind Aria, Sera moves up the bed and settles against her back, one arm sliding around her waist, and presses her mouth to the top of Aria's spine. "Go on," Sera says.

Aria doesn't answer with words. She gets a knee under her and swings a leg over Dani's hips, slow, and the whole movement costs her — her thighs are still trembling from Sera, and the slick between her legs is Dani's now too, spread where Aria settles down over her. She takes Dani's cock in her hand again and holds it upright against her, and Dani's mouth opens on a breath she doesn't finish. Aria's eyes are half-lidded and somewhere else, gone soft and far, and she sinks down onto her an inch at a time — the stretch of it opening her slow, the thick head pressing past the first resistance and then the long slide, and Aria's mouth falls open and stays that way, no sound coming out, until she's seated all the way down and her hips meet Dani's and she lets the breath go in one long, wrecked exhale.

Then she lays down. Just lays down — chest to chest, cheek to Dani's cheek, her whole weight going slack and passive on top of her wife, arms folded in, and Dani's hands come up and settle on the small of her back, holding her there like something that's been handed over. Dani lifts her hips, up and down, up and down, a slow shallow roll that barely pulls out of her and pushes back in, and it's so gentle that Aria feels every single inch of it — the drag on the way out, the wet give on the way in — and her eyes stay closed and her mouth stays open and she doesn't do a thing to help. She just takes it, soft and small, and Dani's breath goes warm against her temple, and the two of them move together in the smallest possible rhythm, the mattress barely creaking. "That's it," Dani says, quiet, unhurried. "Just stay there. Let me." Aria's fingers curl into the sheet on either side of Dani's shoulders and hold on, and that's the only answer she gives.

Sera moves behind her without a sound, and Aria feels the mattress dip, feels the heat of her thighs settle on either side of Dani's legs, feels Sera's hands come down flat on the two cheeks of her ass and spread them — slow, deliberate, thumbs pressing into the soft give beside the seam. Aria's face is turned into Dani's neck, her breath going short and wet against the skin there, and she doesn't lift her head, doesn't say anything, just stays exactly where she was told. Sera's breath lands warm on the tight ring of her, close enough that Aria can feel the air move, and Dani keeps rolling up into her the whole time — shallow, unhurried, that same small rhythm, in and out, in and out — so that Aria's whole body rocks forward onto Sera's mouth and back down onto Dani's cock in one continuous motion she isn't steering.

The first touch of Sera's tongue is flat and wet and patient, dragging up the length of her from the slick seam below to the tight furl above, one long stroke that makes Aria's hands fist in the sheet on either side of Dani's head and her hips jerk back without her permission. Dani's hands slide up from the small of her back to grip her shoulder blades, holding her steady, and she keeps the rhythm going underneath — up and down, up and down, the head of her cock dragging out to the widest part of Aria and pressing back in with a wet, quiet sound. "She's got you from both ends now," Dani says against Aria's temple, and Aria's answer is a sound that starts low in her chest and comes out wrecked and high, muffled into Dani's throat. Sera's tongue circles once, then presses — steady pressure, no hurry — and Aria's thighs clamp hard around Dani's hips and won't let go.

Sera's tongue drags up her one last time and then leaves — a cool wet stripe of air where the heat was, and Aria's hips chase it a half-inch before Dani's hands clamp down on her shoulder blades and hold her in place. Aria turns her face off Dani's throat, cheek to the pillow, eyes open and unfocused, and catches it on the wall: gold light, low and moving, not the sun's — a slow swell of it across the paint, the color of Sera's blood at her fingertips, spreading and rising like something with a pulse. The mattress shifts behind her. Sera's knees come off the sheet and land again, wider, and the light on the wall gets brighter by a degree, and Aria can hear her breathing — different now, deeper, with a low resonance under it she's never heard from a human throat.

Then the pressure arrives. Soft at first, then insistent — a blunt, rounded head finding the tight furl Sera spent the last ten minutes opening with her tongue, and pressing. Aria's breath stops in her chest. It isn't Dani; Dani is still filling her from the front, still rolling up in that same unhurried rhythm, and there is no third person on this bed. Aria's hand comes off the sheet and reaches back blind, and her fingers find warm scaled skin where Sera's hip should be — smooth and hot and faintly ridged, and above it, when her palm flattens, a broad flat plate of something that is not a woman's abdomen. "Sera," she says, and it comes out as half a question and half a sound, and behind her Sera answers with a low hum that Aria feels in her spine.

The head presses again, patient and inevitable, and Aria's whole body arches — chest down into Dani, hips back into Sera — split between them, and the stretch starts. Sera goes in slow, one deliberate inch at a time, and the size of her is wrong and right at once, thicker than anything that should fit, and Aria's hands fist in the sheet on either side of Dani's head and her mouth falls open against Dani's shoulder and stays there, no sound coming out. Dani feels it — feels the new pressure through the wall of Aria's body, feels her cock pressed tight against something that wasn't there a minute ago — and her rhythm stutters for one beat and then finds it again, slower, deeper, matching the push from behind. "Oh," Dani says, quiet, almost to herself, and her hands slide down to grip Aria's hips and hold her exactly where she is. "Both of us."

Dani's human shape goes first — the freckled shoulders, the soft small waist, the body she paid for and chose — and it doesn't vanish so much as unfold, skin going luminous at the seams, the whole of her swelling upward and outward without ever pulling out of Aria. The cock inside her lengthens as it thickens, an impossible slow slide deeper than Aria's body has any right to hold, and Aria's breath tears out of her in a sound she doesn't recognize, her hands clawing at the sheets on either side of Dani's head. Dani's face is the same face — the same dark, unguarded patience — but it's seven feet up now, framed in white light, wings unfurling from her back to fill the whole wall with their span, and the thing inside Aria keeps going, keeps stretching her open around it until her belly is pressed flat between the two of them and the slick runs down the inside of her thighs.

"Oh," Dani says again, and this time it's not quiet at all — it comes from somewhere down in the new chest, a resonance that Aria feels through her own sternum. "There she is." Her hips settle into a new rhythm, slower and much heavier, eleven inches of her dragging almost all the way out and pressing back in with a weight that moves Aria's whole body up the mattress, and Aria is pinned between them — Sera's scaled hips behind her, Dani's vast luminous body under her — and there is nowhere in her left to be except stretched between them. "Look at her," Dani says to Sera, over Aria's shoulder, and her hand comes up to cup Aria's jaw and turn her face so she can see it. "Look at what we did."

Sera answers the look with a sound Aria has never heard her make — half growl, half gold, coming from a chest that's broader than a woman's now, and Aria feels the scaled hips behind her roll forward, one long deliberate push that seats her deeper against Dani's cock through the thin wall of Aria's body. Dani's luminous face tips back at the pressure, the whole vast length of her throat going taut, and her hand slides from Aria's jaw down to the flat of her belly, palm pressing there — pressing down where she can feel the head of Sera's cock bulging forward inside Aria, a hard ridge under her hand that wasn't there a minute ago. "There," Dani says, low, and it comes out of the new chest like a bell rung underwater. "Feel that. Both of us, through her."

Aria's answer is a sound with no shape to it, and her whole spine bows between them — Sera's hips driving in from behind, Dani's eleven inches seated to the hilt beneath her, and nowhere in her that isn't full. Dani's hips lift again, slow, dragging her almost all the way out of Aria and pressing back in with a weight that skids Aria's knees up the sheet, and on the return Sera pushes forward to meet her, so that Aria is caught between them in one continuous motion, rocked forward onto Dani's cock and back onto Sera's, and the wet sound of it fills the room. Sera's scaled hand comes around Aria's hip, claws kept carefully back, and finds Dani's hand on Aria's belly, and the two of them press down together — Dani's warm palm, Sera's cool scaled one — feeling the shape of each other moving inside their wife.

"Look at her," Dani says again, this time just to Aria, her resonant voice dropping low against Aria's temple. "Look at what we're doing to you." Aria turns her face on the pillow and does — she looks down the length of her own body, at the pale stretch of her belly with both their hands pressed flat on it, at the slick shining on the inside of her thighs, and she watches herself take the next slow thrust, watches her own cunt stretch and close around the thick shaft drawing out of her, and she makes a sound she has never made in her life and does not try to take it back. Sera's mouth comes down on the nape of her neck, teeth dragging light over the healed bite, and behind the closed lids of the room the gold light on the wall swells another degree brighter.

Time goes soft and stops meaning anything. It's the rhythm that does it — Dani underneath her, slow and heavy, dragging almost all the way out before pressing back in with that impossible weight, and Sera behind her, scaled hips rolling in on the return, so that Aria is never empty and never full for more than a second at a stretch. Up and down, in and out, the two of them finding each other through the thin wall of her body, and Aria stops counting the thrusts somewhere around the point her voice gives out. She breaks the first time with her face mashed into Dani's neck, a long shuddering thing that rolls up from her cunt and dies in her throat, and neither of them stops. She breaks the second time harder, hips bucking between them, hands scrabbling at Dani's vast luminous shoulders for something to hold, and Dani just cups the back of her head and keeps the rhythm, low and even — "That's two. Give us another" — while Sera's mouth works the nape of her neck and her scaled hand stays pressed flat on Aria's belly, feeling every thrust move through her. The third one takes the longest to arrive and hurts in the best way when it does, a slow-building thing that starts at the base of her spine and climbs, and when it finally crests Aria goes rigid between them and comes with a sound that isn't quite human, her whole body clamping down around both of them at once.

Sera's scaled hips drive in one last time, deeper than any of the others, and stop — buried to the root, the broad flat of her pressed flush against Aria's ass. The sound Sera makes starts in the new chest and comes out as a long, low rumble that Aria feels in her spine before she hears it. Then the heat floods her — thick and impossibly warm, spilling deep into a place Aria has no name for, filling her ass in slow pulses that keep coming, each one pushing Sera's cock against the wall of her from the inside. Aria's hands claw into the sheet and her mouth falls open against Dani's shoulder and nothing comes out. Sera holds her there, hips locked, breathing hard through her teeth, and stays.

Dani doesn't wait for Sera to finish. Her hips lift once more, slow, dragging eleven inches almost out of Aria's stretched pussy, and then she presses back in with a weight that skids Aria's knees up the ruined sheet and holds — and then she's coming too, the vast luminous body going rigid under Aria, both hands clamping down on her hips hard enough to bruise. The first pulse of it is cold, shockingly cold after Sera's heat, and Aria feels it hit deep — a thick pearlescent flood that glows faintly cobalt through the thin wall of her belly, spilling out around Dani's cock in slick ropes that run down the inside of Aria's thighs and soak the sheet beneath them. Dani keeps coming, pulse after pulse, her mouth open and her eyes shut and her wings spread wide and trembling against the wall, and Aria is pinned between them — Sera's cock seated in her ass, Dani's cock buried in her pussy, both of them emptying into her at once, and neither of them pulls out.

The room is nothing but breathing. Aria lies flat between them, cheek mashed to Dani's luminous shoulder, Sera's scaled chest pressed warm along her back, and she can feel both of them still hard inside her, still twitching, still spilling the last slow pulses. Dani's come runs out of her in a wet line down the sheet and glows faintly cobalt where it pools. Sera's mouth finds the top of Aria's spine and stays there, open, breathing. Dani's hand slides up from Aria's hip to the flat of her belly and presses down, palm flat, feeling the shape of both of them still buried in her wife. "Stay," Dani says, quiet, the resonance gone out of her voice, just her voice now. "Don't move yet." Aria doesn't. She couldn't if she wanted to.

Sera pulls out slowly, and Aria's body lets her go with a wet, reluctant sound that neither of them comments on. The scaled hips ease back, the impossible thickness dragging out of her an inch at a time, and Aria's breath comes out in a long, broken thread against Dani's shoulder as the last of it slips free and the cold morning air finds the place Sera just left. Dani slips out beneath her a beat later, gentle, one hand braced on Aria's hip to keep her from collapsing into the wet spot, and Aria rolls off onto her back and lies there, flat on the ruined sheet, staring at the ceiling with her chest heaving and her thighs still trembling and Dani's come running out of her in slow cobalt-lit lines down the crease of her leg.

Sera moves off the mattress and stands at the foot of the bed — properly, fully, the way she's never let herself stand in front of Aria before. The gold light on the wall was only the beginning. She's tall now, Dani-tall, and built the same way: full hips under a waist that has no business being that narrow, breasts heavy and round and high, shoulders softer than a man's and broader than a woman's. Everything about the proportions is feminine — the curve of the abdomen, the long line of the throat, the way the muscle moves under the skin when she breathes. Auburn curls still, gold irises still, the same face Aria has memorized across a kitchen table and a courtroom and a thousand quiet mornings — and lower, rising off her belly, thick and scaled and flushed a deep molten gold at the tip, a dragon's cock standing straight up between her legs like a fact she's stopped apologizing for. Aria props herself up on one elbow and just looks at her. Doesn't say anything. Catalogues her the way she catalogues a body she's about to heal — the freckles across her ribs, the small pale scar under her left breast, the faint gold shimmer that runs up the inside of her thighs where the dragon blood shows through.

Sera looks back at her — gold irises steady, unblinking — and then she does the thing Aria has never once seen her do. She crosses her arms at the hem of her own shape and pulls the whole woman off like a coat. The freckled shoulders go first, folding away in a shimmer of gold light, and everything she was wearing for the world falls with it, and what's left is the dragon standing on the bedroom carpet in the morning sun with her wings half-unfurled behind her and her long neck arched down to look at her wife. She's huge. She's gold from throat to tail-tip and she's careful — every claw kept back, every scaled shoulder turned so she doesn't brush the lamp off the nightstand — and she takes two slow steps and folds herself down onto the mattress, which groans and dips under a weight it was never built for, and settles onto her side with her tail curled up off the floor and her enormous head laid flat on the pillow beside Aria's face. Then, with a slow ripple of gold light that runs the whole length of her, she pulls the woman back on over the top of the dragon — auburn curls, freckles, the small scar, the heavy breasts, the narrow waist — and lies there on her back, fully human-shaped and fully visible and fully herself, and just breathes. "There," Sera says, and her voice has the low resonance still in it. "That's the whole file. No more layers."

Aria's answer is not words. She rolls off her back and comes up onto her knees, slow, cataloguing as she goes — the gold shimmer still running up the inside of Sera's thighs, the scaled cock standing off her belly flushed molten at the tip, the way her wife's chest rises and falls like she's just run a mile she enjoyed. Aria swings one leg over Sera's hips and settles down onto her, straddling her, and Sera's hands come up to the crests of Aria's hips and hold her there, thumbs pressing flat into the soft give above the bone. Aria leans down and puts her mouth on Sera's mouth — first kiss in this shape, and it lands different, Sera tasting faintly of smoke and warm metal — and behind her, the mattress dips again. Dani's hands arrive on Aria's shoulders, then slide down her back, unhurried, and settle on the two cheeks of her ass and spread them, the same way Sera did ten minutes ago. "My turn," Dani says at the back of Aria's neck. "You got hers. Now you get both."

Dani's hands slide up from Aria's ass to the small of her back and press her down, chest to chest with Sera, until Aria's tits flatten against Sera's and her mouth is an inch from Sera's mouth. Then Dani's cock finds the wet mess Sera left in Aria's cunt — still slick, still open, still twitching from the last one — and pushes in without asking, one long slow thrust that seats her to the root in a single motion. Aria's whole body jerks forward, and Sera's scaled cock is waiting there, pressed hot and rigid against her belly, and Aria feels Dani's eleven inches stretch her open while Sera's own length drags against her clit with every roll of Dani's hips. "Oh, fuck," Aria says, out loud, into Sera's mouth, and Sera swallows it and kisses her through it. "That's it," Dani says at the back of her neck, and starts to move — slow, heavy, dragging almost all the way out of Aria's pussy before pressing back in with a weight that pushes Aria's cunt down onto Sera's cock, so that every thrust from behind grinds Aria's clit along the scaled ridge below her. "Take her too. You know what to do."

Aria gets a hand under herself and lifts her hips an inch, and Sera's scaled cock stands up off her belly, flushed molten at the tip, slick already with the wetness that's been running down Aria's thighs. Aria takes it in her hand and holds it upright and sinks down onto it — slow, the thick head pressing past the first resistance and then the long impossible slide, and Dani keeps moving behind her the whole time, so that Aria is caught between the two of them in one continuous motion, filled front and back, and the wet sound of it fills the room. Sera's mouth opens on a sound Aria has never heard her make, low and gold and wrecked, and her hands clamp down on Aria's hips and hold her there, seated to the root, while Dani fucks into her from behind. "Look at you," Dani says, quiet, into Aria's shoulder. "Stuffed full of both of us. And still taking it."

Then the rhythm finds itself — Dani's hips rolling slow and heavy from behind, Sera's scaled hips pushing up to meet her, and Aria pinned between them like the meat in a sandwich, her cunt stretched around Sera's cock, her ass full of Dani, her whole body one long continuous channel that both of them are fucking through. She comes the first time like that, clenching down on both of them at once,

— and the two of them don't even slow down, don't give her a second to breathe through it, Dani's hips just keep rolling that slow heavy weight up into her while Sera's scaled hips push up underneath, and Aria's cunt clenches and releases and clenches again around the thick gold shaft buried in it, milking it in long wet pulses that she can't stop and wouldn't if she could. "There she goes," Dani says against the back of her neck, low and satisfied, and her hand slides from Aria's hip around the front of her body, fingers finding Aria's clit and pressing flat against it, not moving, just holding it there while Sera's scaled ridge drags along it with every thrust. Aria's whole body bows between them and she makes a sound that isn't a word, and Sera answers it with one of those low gold rumbles that runs down the length of her cock and into Aria's guts.

Sera's hands come up off Aria's hips and find her tits, palms flat over both of them, thumbs dragging slow circles around her nipples, and Sera lifts her head off the pillow and finds Aria's mouth with her own — open, breathing into it, tasting of smoke and warm metal — and Aria kisses her back sloppy and uncoordinated while Dani fucks her from behind and Sera's cock stretches her open from below. "Look at me," Sera says into her mouth, and Aria opens her eyes and does, and Sera's gold irises are blown wide and steady on her face, cataloguing her the way Aria catalogues a body she's about to heal. "You're taking all of me." Aria's answer is a broken nod, her forehead pressed to Sera's, and behind her Dani's rhythm deepens — dragging almost all the way out of her pussy and pressing back in with a weight that skids her knees up the ruined sheet, so that every thrust drives her down onto Sera's cock and grinds her clit against the scaled ridge underneath. "That's three," Dani says, quiet, and then, without changing her pace at all: "Give me one more and I'll fill you up."

Aria pushes herself up off Sera's chest, palms flat on the mattress on either side of Sera's ribs, and takes the rhythm into her own hips. She rises slow — Sera's scaled cock dragging out of her an inch at a time, the thick gold head catching at her entrance before she sinks back down onto it, all the way to the root — and Dani groans behind her and catches the new angle, driving in hard on the downstroke so that Aria gets both of them at once, seated to the hilt front and back. Sera's hands find Aria's waist and hold on, gold irises fixed on the place where her own cock disappears into her wife, and her mouth comes open on a low rumble. "There she is," Sera says, wrecked, and Aria answers by riding her faster.

Dani's hands clamp down on Aria's hips and start steering — pulling her back onto the thrust and shoving her forward onto Sera's cock in one continuous arc, so Aria's whole body becomes the mechanism between them. Every drive from behind pushes her down onto the scaled length until the molten head grinds something deep and tender, and every time she lifts off it Dani pulls halfway out and slams back in, and the wet slap of it fills the room. "Say it," Dani says at the back of her neck, low and level, no hurry in her voice at all. "Whose are you." Aria's hands fist the sheet beside Sera's shoulder and she gets the words out between breaths, guttural, honest — "Yours. Both of yours. Fuck — both of you —" — and Sera's scaled hips buck up off the mattress at the sound of it, taking her harder than Aria was steering.

Sera's hips come up to meet her on every downstroke now, gold irises locked on Aria's face, and her hands slide off Aria's waist and up to her tits, taking them in both palms and squeezing as Aria fucks herself down onto the scaled shaft. The molten head drags something deep each time she bottoms out, and behind her Dani keeps the weight coming — slow, heavy, dragging almost all the way out of her ass before slamming back to the root so that Aria's whole cunt is shoved down onto Sera's cock and her clit grinds along the scaled ridge underneath. "Fuck," Aria says, out loud, no one's name on it, just the word, and Sera answers with that low gold rumble that Aria feels in her spine before she hears it. "That's it," Dani says at the back of her neck, level, unhurried. "Take her. Take both of us."

Aria finds the rhythm and holds it — up off Sera's cock until only the thick head is left catching at her entrance, then down, all the way, until her ass meets Dani's hips behind her and her cunt is seated to the root on the scaled shaft, and Dani drives in on every downstroke so that she gets the full length of both of them in the same beat. Her thighs are burning. Her hands are flat on Sera's chest now, palms over the heavy breasts, thumbs dragging across the nipples, and Sera's mouth is open and her neck is arched back into the pillow and she's saying something under the rumble that Aria can't make out, gold light shimmering up the inside of her own thighs like the dragon is bleeding through the woman. "There," Sera gets out, wrecked. "Right there — stay there —" and Aria stays, riding her short and hard, letting Dani hammer her down onto the scaled cock over and over.

Sera's hips come up off the mattress and lock — a hard, final shove that seats her scaled cock to the root in Aria's cunt, and then she's coming, the gold light surging up the inside of her thighs and running into Aria like something molten poured down a channel. The first pulse hits deep and hot, thick enough that Aria feels it spread, and Sera's mouth comes open on that low gold rumble and stays open, her gold irises blown wide and fixed on Aria's face while she empties herself into her wife in slow, deliberate waves. Behind Aria, Dani's rhythm stutters — she feels it through the thin wall of Aria's body, feels Sera's cock swelling and spilling on the other side — and something in her goes feral and quiet at once. "Oh, you feel that," Dani says at the back of Aria's neck, level, almost conversational, and her hands clamp down on Aria's hips and she drives in one last time, all eleven inches, and stays buried, and comes.

Dani's release is cold when it lands — a shock of it after Sera's heat, cobalt-bright, pearlescent, thick as cream — and Aria feels it hit the deep wall of her cunt in a long pulse that keeps going, one flood after another, until there is nowhere left inside her that isn't full. And then the two of them meet. The gold light Sera poured into her ass and the cobalt glow Dani is still pumping into her pussy find each other through the thin membrane between, and Aria's whole belly lights up — a low, warm, impossible glow that spreads under her skin from the inside out, gold and blue braiding together through the pale stretch of her stomach and throwing soft light onto Sera's chest, onto Dani's hands where they grip her hips, onto the ruined sheet beneath all three of them. Aria looks down at herself and sees it: her own body lit from within, both their cocks still buried in her, both of them still coming, the glow moving under her skin like something alive in there. "Fuck," she says, out loud, no one's name on it, and her hands curl into Sera's chest and hold on.

Sera doesn't pull out. She stays seated to the root, scaled hips locked against Aria's ass, and the gold light keeps coming in slow deliberate waves that Aria feels spread and settle. Then Sera's hands slide up off Aria's tits and find her waist and start to move her — lifting her an inch, seating her back down, working the molten length in and out of her cunt in short heavy strokes while Dani stays buried in her ass behind them. "Again," Sera says, gold irises fixed on the place where her own cock disappears into her wife. "I want to watch it happen again."

Dani answers by starting to move — a slow drag almost all the way out of Aria's ass and a hard shove back to the root that pushes her down onto Sera's scaled shaft in the same beat. The rhythm finds itself fast: Dani hammering from behind, Sera lifting up to meet her from below, and Aria pinned between them taking both of them at once, her belly already glowing so bright the light throws their shadows onto the wall. "You're lit up like a lantern," Dani says at the back of her neck, conversational, and drives in harder. "Both of us in you and you're lit up like a lantern."

Aria's hands come down flat on Sera's chest and she rides it — up off the scaled cock until only the thick head is left catching at her entrance, then down all the way until her ass meets Dani's hips and her cunt is seated to the root, and Dani drives in on every downstroke so she gets the full length of both of them in the same beat. Sera's mouth comes open on that low gold rumble and her hips buck up off the mattress, taking her harder than Aria was steering, and the gold light surges up the inside of her thighs again. "There," Sera gets out, wrecked. "Right there — don't stop —"

The crest takes Aria first this time, a long shuddering clench that rolls up from her cunt and clamps down on both of them at once, and she comes with her forehead pressed to Sera's and no sound at all, just her whole body going rigid between them. Sera feels it through the scaled shaft and comes a half-beat later — a hard final shove that seats her to the root and holds, the gold light pouring up her thighs and flooding into Aria in slow thick pulses that push against the wall of her from the inside. Dani feels both of them through the thin membrane and goes feral and quiet at once, hands clamping down on Aria's hips hard enough to bruise, and drives in one last time and stays buried and comes.

Sera's hands find Aria's ribs and gently roll her off, onto her back on the ruined sheet, and then the light comes — a slow gold shimmer that starts at her collarbone and runs the whole length of her, folding the woman away the way it folded in. The scaled cock recedes last, gold bleeding back to skin, the freckles returning across her shoulders and the small pale scar under her left breast, auburn curls spilling down to the pillow as she settles onto her side, human-shaped and human-warm and grinning at the ceiling like she's just gotten away with something.

"Well," Sera says, and her voice is her own again, no resonance under it, just the low dry thing Aria has memorized across a thousand mornings. She turns her head on the pillow and looks at Aria with gold still flickering faint in her irises, and the grin goes crooked the way it does when she's about to say something she's been holding. "I had to try it at least once. See what all the fuss was about."

Aria's laugh comes out of her wrecked and honest, no breath behind it, and she rolls onto her side to face Sera and just giggles — helpless, undignified, the sound bouncing off the ceiling of a bedroom where a dragon was standing ten minutes ago. Dani groans into the pillow on Aria's other side, reaches over her without opening her eyes to swat Sera's shoulder; Sera catches her hand and holds it there. The three of them lie in the morning sun with the sheet kicked to the floor, the courier not yet at the door, the cardinal silent in the split pine outside, and none of them reaches for anything at all.

Aria props herself up on one elbow, morning sun striping the sheet, and looks down the length of the bed at her wife — human-shaped now, freckles back, gold still flickering at the edges of her irises like a fire that hasn't decided to be out. "Okay, but be honest," Aria says. "Was it—" she gestures vaguely at the general region of Sera's hips, "—was the dragon cock a one-time thing, or are you going to want it again?" Sera snorts and rolls onto her back, one arm thrown over her eyes. "It was fascinating," she says, dry, "and it was the most efficient way I've ever found to be inside you and Dani at the same time. Which, I'll admit, was the point." She lifts the arm enough to peer out. "The cock itself? Novel. Instructive. But I have no plans to keep it. I'm still—" she lets the arm drop, waves a hand at her own body, "—all of this. I just wanted to know what it felt like to be the one filling instead of the one filled."

Dani, on Aria's other side, has one eye open and her cheek still mashed to the pillow. "So it was a tool," she says, flat. "You're saying you grew a cock as a *tool*." Sera turns her head on the pillow and grins at her, unrepentant. "A very good tool. I could feel both of you through her." Dani's eye narrows, then closes again, and she makes a sound that's half laugh and half groan. Aria rolls onto her back between them and stares at the ceiling, and the question she's been circling all morning finally comes out sideways: "Okay. Then fair's fair. Dani — do you ever want to try it the other way? A pussy. Just to see." The room goes very quiet in the way only a room with three people in it can, and Dani opens both eyes this time and looks at Aria properly, and doesn't answer right away, which is itself an answer.

Dani's hand comes up from under the pillow and rests flat on her own sternum, fingers spread, feeling the architecture she paid for. "You know what it took to get here," she says, and it isn't a question. "Six years. Two surgeries. A savings account I drained to zero and a mother who still calls me by the wrong name at Christmas." Her thumb traces the small ridge of the scar under her left breast — the one Aria has kissed without ever asking about. "This body isn't a costume I can swap out for an afternoon. It's the one I fought for." She turns her head on the pillow and looks at Aria, and her eyes are dry, steady. "But that's not a no. That's a *not yet*. There's a difference, and I want you to hear it."

Sera, on Aria's other side, props herself up on one elbow and studies Dani the way she studies a person's true file — unhurried, gold flickering faint at the edges of her irises. "I did it in an hour," she says, quiet. "Grew a whole second body's worth of equipment and put it back on like a coat. It didn't cost me anything. It didn't mean anything about who I am." She pauses, and something in her voice goes careful. "Yours would cost you something. That's the part I don't get to have an opinion on." Dani's mouth quirks. "Look at the dragon, being delicate." Sera snorts and lies back down. "I'm being *accurate*. You spent years earning that body. If you ever try mine, it should be because you want to, not because the elf asked a fun question at breakfast."

Aria rolls onto her side to face Dani, and the sheet drags off her hip in the process. "I wasn't asking for a show," she says, and it comes out more honest than she meant it to. "I was asking because I've been in this body for half a year and I still don't know what I'm allowed to want from it. You've been in yours for your whole life. I figured you'd know the answer." Dani reaches across the small space between them and hooks two fingers through Aria's — just the fingers, nothing else. "The answer is you're allowed to want things," she says. "You're also allowed to not know yet. That's the one thing nobody tells you about a body you chose." She lets go of Aria's hand and points a thumb at Sera. "Ask *her* what she wants. She's the one who just spent an hour as a man and put it back on the rack."

Aria rolls back the other way, onto her other elbow, and fixes Sera with a look — the same look she gives a body she's about to heal, cataloguing, unhurried. "You heard her," she says. "Your turn. You spent an hour as a man and put it back on the rack. So — what do you actually want next? Not the tool. Not the trick. You." She leans in, and the sheet gives up the last of her hip and slides to the floor without either of them reaching for it.

Sera doesn't answer right away. She rolls onto her side to face Aria properly, one arm folding under her head, and the gold at the edges of her irises flickers once and banks. Her thumb finds the small pale scar under her own left breast and presses it, the way she does when she's deciding something. "You want the honest answer or the one that sounds good at breakfast?" she says. "Because the honest one is that I've been a dragon for two weeks and a woman for thirty years, and the thing I keep circling back to isn't either of those. It's that I spent six hundred years of somebody else's history reading about elves and never once got to be one." She lets that sit on the pillow between them. "I want to know what it's like on your side of the pointed ear. Not for a night. Long enough to mean it."

Dani's eye comes open again, and she looks at Sera over Aria's shoulder with a slow, flat appreciation. "Oh, she's *serious*," Dani says, to no one in particular. "The dragon wants to try on the elf." Sera doesn't blink. "I want to try on the elf," she agrees, and turns her gold-flickered eyes back to Aria, and waits, and the room goes quiet around the three of them the way it did before — the fridge downstairs, water in the wall, and the question lying open on the sheet with nobody in a hurry to close it.

"That's easy," Aria says, and she's up on one elbow before she's finished the thought, hair spilling silver-blond across the pillow and one tangle of it catching on her own pointed ear. "You don't have to be a human when you're hiding the dragon. You can be an elf." She says it like it's obvious, like she's just handed Sera a spare key. "It's a better coat than the one you're wearing, anyway — no offense to the freckles." Dani makes a low, noncommittal noise into her pillow, the kind she makes when she's decided to be entertained rather than argue. Aria ignores her and keeps going, and the second half comes out slower, because she's actually thinking it through now. "Or — if you'd rather not do the small version — we get this whole Cabal thing behind us first. Then I dispel the dragon. And you can just be an elf instead. True Polymorph. Permanent. No coat at all."

Sera goes still on the pillow, which is not the same as going quiet. Her thumb has stopped pressing the scar under her breast. She looks at Aria the way she looked at the iron coin in Gareth's hand — turning the thing over, checking the edges — and then she says, flat, "You're offering to take the dragon *out* of me." It isn't a question and it isn't a refusal; it's her holding the shape of it up to the light. "You just watched me fold a whole second body on and off like laundry and you're offering me a third one, and you're calling it easy." Aria opens her mouth. Sera puts one finger on it, light, and doesn't move her hand away. "I didn't say no. I said say it again after the Cabal is finished and I'll tell you what I actually think. Don't spend the spell on the breakfast version of me."

Aria kisses the fingertip, and Sera takes her hand back. Downstairs, the fridge hums, and out in the split pine the cardinal has started up again, and somewhere past the window a car door shuts — the courier, or the neighbor, or nothing. Dani rolls onto her back and stares at the ceiling with both eyes open now. "So the plan is: kill the Cabal, then the dragon gets to decide if she's still a dragon," she says. "I want it noted that I've been the reasonable one for four straight minutes." Aria reaches over and pulls the sheet up over all three of them with one hand, and the question stays open on the mattress between them, and nobody reaches to close it.
