The Deva Unbound

The house settles as Marcus and Mike claim the guest rooms, and I'm still buzzing from the night when Dani catches my wrist in the hallway — her eyes already going cobalt, that resonance humming under her skin. She pulls me into the master bedroom, kicks the door shut, and says 'I've been holding this in all night' as she lets the human form fold away — seven feet of metallic-winged Deva, holy light tracing her collarbones, her cock standing proud and glowing, now a full eleven inches long and thick as an elf's wrist. She pins me to the bed with one hand, spreads my thighs with the other, and growls that she wants to see how an elf screams for her angel. Sera, of course, sneaks in right behind. The act this chapter delivers: Dani, in her full Deva form, fucks Aria slow and deep on the king bed, her glowing eleven-inch cock stretching Aria's cunt until she comes twice, then pulls out and comes across Aria's stomach and breasts, the holy light of her seed cooling on Aria's skin as they both shake.

Marcus and Mike took the guest rooms like men claiming territory, and the house went quiet around them the way a house does when it's finally full. Aria stood in the kitchen with the last of the whiskey warm in her throat, listening to water run through the pipes and Mike's boots thud overhead, and she was still buzzing — the good kind, the kind that hums in the teeth — when a hand closed around her wrist in the hallway.

Dani's eyes had already gone cobalt. The glow moved under her skin like something swimming, and the resonance came off her in a low hum Aria felt in her sternum before she heard it. "I've been holding this in all night," Dani said, and pulled her through the master door, and kicked it shut behind them with her heel. The human shape folded away the way a coat comes off — shoulders widening, spine lengthening, wings unfurling to brush both walls — until Dani stood seven feet of metallic Deva in the amber streetlight, holy light tracing the lines of her collarbones and the long ridge of her cock, standing proud and lit from inside, eleven inches of it and thick as Aria's wrist. One hand pinned Aria flat to the mattress. The other spread her thighs like opening a book. "I want to hear how an elf screams for her angel," Dani growled, and the door clicked again — Sera slipping in behind them, gold in her irises, arms crossed, watching with the patient hunger of something that could burn the house down and chose not to.

Dani dragged the head of her cock through the wet of Aria's cunt, once, twice, the glow of it smearing slick down her folds, and then pushed in. Slow. Aria's back arched off the sheets and her mouth opened around a sound that wasn't a word, because Dani was thick in a way that made the old body's arithmetic irrelevant — every inch a separate fact, each one arriving after the last like a knock at a door she'd stopped pretending wasn't hers. "Breathe," Dani said, and Aria did, and Dani sank the rest of the way until her hips met Aria's ass and the holy light of her pulsed against the stretch, and Aria's cunt clenched down on her like a fist closing. "There she is," Dani said, soft, and pulled back, and drove home again.

Sera didn't move from the door. She stood with her back against the frame and her arms crossed, gold bleeding into the brown of her irises, and she watched Dani's hips pull back and drive home again with the flat, unhurried attention of someone reading a page she'd already memorized. Aria caught her eyes across the room and something in her chest went tight — because Sera was looking at her the way she looked at a ledger she was about to sign, patient and total, and Aria understood, in the half-second before Dani did it again, that Sera wasn't waiting her turn. She was watching her wife get ruined and filing it away for later.

Dani's hand came off the mattress and found Aria's throat — not squeezing, just holding, thumb pressed flat over the pulse — and she leaned down until the holy light of her broke across Aria's face and the length of her went deeper by an inch Aria hadn't known was available. Aria's eyes flew wide and stayed wide, the whole room narrowing to the drag and the stretch and the wet sound of Dani pulling back until only the head stayed in, then filling her again, slow, deliberate, every pass a little further than the last. "Say it," Dani said, low in her chest, the resonance of it vibrating down through Aria's sternum and into the mattress. "Say whose."

Aria's mouth worked. What came out wasn't Elvish and wasn't English — just her wife's name, cracked down the middle, and Dani's grin split wide enough that Aria could see the light catch on her teeth. Behind her, Sera uncrossed her arms and pushed off the doorframe, and the floorboards under her bare feet gave one low creak as she came toward the bed.

Sera came around the foot of the bed, and the mattress dipped when she put her knee on it — one slow creak of springs, then the second knee, until she was kneeling beside them with her thighs spread and her hands resting flat on her own knees. Her eyes never left the place where Dani's cock sank into Aria. Not Aria's face. Not Dani's. The join. She watched it the way she'd watched the group photo on the desk an hour ago — total, unhurried, filing every detail — and when Dani pulled back to the head and pushed home again, Sera's chin dipped a quarter inch, an acknowledgment, a nod to a thing she'd already decided was true.

Dani felt her there before Aria could say anything. She turned her head, and the two of them looked at each other across Aria's body — Dani's cobalt eyes and Sera's gold ones, four inches apart, and something passed between them that Aria couldn't see the shape of, only the result: Dani's hips slowed, drawing it out, letting Sera watch the full length of the pull, the wet shine of it, the way Aria's cunt clung to her on the way out like it didn't want to let go. "She's tighter when you watch," Dani said. Not to Aria. To Sera. "Feel her."

Sera's hand came off her knee. It crossed the short distance between them slowly, fingers spread, and stopped an inch above Aria's hip — close enough that Aria felt the heat of her palm on her skin before it landed, close enough that she could see the faint gold shimmer Sera's dragon blood left at the tips of her fingers now, close enough that the whole room went still around that one suspended inch.

Sera's palm landed. It came down flat on the swell of Aria's hip and stayed there, warm and dry and heavier than it had any right to be, and Aria felt the gold in those fingertips the way you feel a struck bell through a wall — not the touch, the resonance underneath it. Sera's thumb pressed once, testing, and then her hand slid inward across the damp skin of Aria's belly, unhurried, mapping the place where Dani was splitting her open, and stopped with the heel of her palm flat against Aria's mound, fingers splayed, feeling the stretch from the outside. "Oh," Sera said. Just that. A small, private syllable, filed. Dani pulled back to the head and Sera felt the whole length of it go, and her breath came out slow through her nose, and Aria — pinned, full, held at the throat — watched her wife's face change in a way she had never once seen it change.

Then Sera moved. She came up off her knees and swung one leg over Aria's face, and the gold dress hitched high on her thigh with the motion, and Aria had exactly one second to understand what was about to happen before it happened. Sera settled. Her knees bracketed Aria's ears, her bare cunt came down over Aria's mouth — hot, slick, the whole weight of her, the smell of her sharp and mineral and sweet — and Aria's world went to a narrow gold band of light and the taste of dragon on her tongue. She heard them above her. Heard the wet sound of Dani's mouth finding Sera's, heard Sera's hum go straight down through her hips into Aria's jaw, felt the two of them lean into each other over her body like she wasn't there, like she was the table they'd set for dinner. She couldn't see it. She wanted to see it — wanted it so bad her hands curled into the sheets — and she couldn't, and the not-seeing did something to her that seeing never had. She licked up into Sera instead. Slow first, then with the flat of her tongue, learning the shape of her, and Sera's hips rolled down onto her mouth in answer, steady and patient and completely unembarrassed, one hand braced on the headboard and the other somewhere above Aria's head, tangled in Dani's hair.

Above her, the kiss had a sound. Wet, unhurried, the occasional small break and rejoin, and under it Sera’s breathing through her nose — slow, deliberate, a woman doing two things at once and refusing to rush either. Aria caught fragments: the drag of Dani’s tongue, the click of teeth, a swallowed hum that traveled down through Sera’s hips and landed in Aria’s jaw like a hand on a bell. She chased it with her mouth, tongue flat and then pointed, finding the small hard place above Sera’s opening and circling it until Sera’s thighs clamped once around Aria’s ears and let go. The taste was not human. Salt and copper and something like rain on hot stone, and Aria understood in that moment that she was learning a new species with her tongue. She wished she could see it — Dani’s hand fisted in Sera’s hair, Sera’s chin tipped up, the two of them wearing the faces they made when they thought no one was watching. She couldn’t. She had a face full of dragon and no angle to the rest of the room, and the deprivation was its own kind of filling, a narrow gold world with one job in it.

Dani didn’t stop. She’d found a rhythm while Sera was settling — not fast, but relentless, the kind of pace that didn’t ask Aria’s permission and didn’t need it, and Aria’s cunt had gone past gripping into something looser and wetter that made the sound between them obscene. Every time Dani bottomed out, Sera rolled down onto Aria’s mouth in answer, like the two of them were sharing a metronome Aria couldn’t hear. Sera’s free hand came down off the headboard and found Aria’s breast, palm flat, thumb dragging across the nipple once, twice, then pinching — not gently — and Aria moaned straight up into her, and Sera’s hips stuttered for the first time all night. “There,” Sera said, above her, to no one, to Dani, to the ceiling. Her voice had a crack in it that Aria had never heard in two years of game nights and one year of marriage. Dani answered by driving in hard enough to shove Aria an inch up the mattress, and Sera rode the motion down, and Aria’s tongue went flat and useless under the weight of her.

Sera came apart above her in slow motion, and Aria felt every stage of it against her tongue — the small muscles in Sera's thighs going tight, then tighter, the whole weight of her bearing down, the taste of her thickening and going sharp at the edges, like a struck match held under the tongue. The gold in Aria's mouth was not a flavor she had words for. It was rain on hot stone, it was the smell of a summer storm she hadn't known she was hungry for, and it rolled down her throat and lit something in her chest that had no business being lit — a low, humming want that had nothing to do with her cunt and everything to do with the woman riding her face. Sera's hand fisted in Aria's hair, not gentle, and her hips ground down once, twice, in a rhythm that had stopped being about Aria's mouth and started being about Sera chasing it. Pinned and full and held, Aria understood she would have done this forever — would have let the whole night go by with Sera's weight on her jaw and Dani's cock in her, and called it a good life.

She shattered with the taste of her wife on her tongue and the stretch of her other wife inside her, and the two of them did not stop. Sera rode it out on Aria's mouth — every spasm, every roll of her hips, every small broken sound that came down through her thighs and into Aria's jaw — and Dani, watching both of them, went harder, and the wet sound between Aria's legs turned into something obscene and steady, a metronome she could feel in her teeth. Aria's hips came off the mattress. Dani's hand found her belly and pushed her flat, palm spread, and drove in hard enough that Aria's mouth came off Sera for a half-second before Sera's hand dragged her back. "Don't you dare," Sera said, low and wrecked, and the crack in her voice — that voice, the one that read legal contracts and mocked Marcus and never once in two years had sounded like *this* — did more to Aria than any thrust could. Aria licked back into her, frantic, and Sera's hips answered, and Dani answered Sera, and the three of them found a rhythm that no one was leading and no one could stop, and Aria, held at the throat and split open and filled at the mouth, went somewhere she had no map for and did not want one.

Dani's rhythm changed. Aria felt it before she understood it — the drag going shorter, the bottoming-out coming faster, Dani's breath breaking out of its even cadence into something ragged and low. The hand on Aria's throat pressed once, twice, and then left. Dani pulled out. The wet sound of it filled the room, obscene and sudden, and Aria's cunt clenched around nothing and grieved the shape of her. Above her, Sera went still, hips lifting, mouth opening, and Aria's tongue chased her cunt for one last second before Sera's knees came up off her ears and the whole weight of her lifted away. Aria's jaw ached. She didn't care. She turned her head against the sheets just in time to see Dani above them — seven feet of Deva, wings spread wide enough to brush both lamps, holy light climbing her spine and gathering under her skin like something about to break daylight. Dani's cock stood away from her body, swollen and shining, and her hand wrapped around it once — one long pull from base to head — and then she came.

It came in a fountain, not a spill. A rope of it crossed the space between her and the bed and painted a hot line across Aria's belly, then another across Sera's thigh, then another that broke over Aria's breast and ran down into the hollow of her throat. It was pearl — luminescent, faintly cobalt, lit from inside — and where it landed it glowed against Aria's skin like something that had no business being wet. Dani's hips rocked through it, one pulse and then another and another, and Aria watched her wife come apart with her cock in her own hand and her name breaking out of her chest in a sound that was not human and not quiet. The fifth pulse caught Sera's cheek and jaw and she didn't wipe it. She turned her head into it instead, deliberate, and Aria watched her wife's tongue come out and take some of it off her own lip, and something in Aria's chest cracked open and stayed open. Dani's knees gave. She came down onto the bed between them on all fours, wings folding in slow, breath sawing, and she was still hard, still glowing, still watching the two of them with those cobalt eyes.

Sera got there first. She came up off her knees and put her hand flat on Dani's chest — not pushing, just claiming the space — and dragged her palm down through the wet shine on Dani's skin until she found the base of her, and closed her fist around it. "Not in her," Sera said, low, gold in her irises catching the lamplight. "You know what that is." Dani's breath sawed out of her and her hips bucked once into Sera's grip, and she nodded, and Sera pulled — one long, slow stroke from base to head, deliberate, the way she did everything, watching Dani's face the whole time. Aria lay beneath them with her thighs still spread and Dani's glow drying tacky on her belly, and watched her two wives negotiate the end of the night over her body like a contract neither of them had to read out loud.

Dani came apart over her the second time in a sound that started in her chest and broke somewhere in the middle, and Sera kept her word — she aimed her, both hands now, one at the base and one cradling the head, and pulled her off the line of Aria's body at the last half-second. It went everywhere anyway. Pearl and cobalt, lit from inside, a hot rope of it across Aria's hip and another across Sera's forearm and a third that hit the sheets between them and glowed there like something spilled out of a church. Dani's knees folded and she came down on top of Sera instead, seven feet of Deva collapsing into a woman-shaped heap, wings tucking in slow, and Sera caught her with a grunt and a laugh that had no breath behind it. Aria reached over and put her hand flat on the small of Dani's back, where the wings met skin, and felt the last of it shiver through her — the aftershock, the resonance, the low hum of something that had stopped being human months ago and had never once seemed to mind.

Aria pushed herself up on one elbow, and the room swam a half-second before it settled — the lamps, the rumpled sheets, the two women tangled at the foot of the bed with Dani's wings still half-spread and Sera's forearm slick to the elbow with something that glowed faint cobalt in the low light. Aria looked at it. Looked at the bead of it threading slow down the inside of Sera's wrist, at the line of it drying tacky across her own hip and belly, and did the math she'd been too busy to do an hour ago: Dani was a Deva now, and Aria was an elf, and if she ever let that happen inside her — if she made the appointment, as it were — the thing that came out the other end would be neither. Half elf. Half celestial. Some impossible third thing that had no name and no stat block and would probably be beautiful. The giggle came up out of her before she could stop it, low and giddy and a little unhinged, and both of her wives turned their heads at the sound.

She didn't explain it. She reached across Sera's body — past the elbow, past the hip — and dragged one fingertip through the longest rope of it where it had pooled and cooled in the hollow above Sera's navel, and put the finger in her mouth. It was not what semen should taste like. It was sweet. Not candy-sweet — something rounder and stranger, like the smell of rain on a hot sidewalk translated into flavor, with a faint mineral edge underneath, cold and clean, like water from a deep well. Aria made a small surprised sound around her own knuckle and went back for a second taste, and Sera watched her do it with gold in her irises and one eyebrow lifting a quarter inch, filing it. "Oddly sweet," Aria said, muffled, still licking her finger. "That's — that's actually quite pleasant. Is that a Deva thing?" Dani's laugh came out wrecked and breathless from where she'd collapsed on Sera's shoulder. "Ask me in the morning."

Aria didn't wait for morning. She rolled onto her knees and crawled the short distance down the mattress to where Sera lay with Dani sprawled across her, and put her mouth on the inside of Sera's wrist — the long tendon, the place the bead of Dani's come had pooled and started to dry. She licked it off in one slow pass, flat-tongued, and it was the same: sweet, mineral, that deep-well cold under the warmth. Sera's hand went still in her hair. "You're doing it again," Sera said, but her voice had gone low and pleased, and she didn't pull away. Aria followed the line of it up her forearm, elbow to inner elbow, then the crook of it, then the hollow of her shoulder where a thin rope had caught in the notch of her collarbone, and Sera's breath came out of her nose in a slow, deliberate measure, the way she breathed when she was doing math she didn't want anyone to see her do.

Then Sera moved. She reached up and caught Aria's chin between two fingers, tilted her head, and looked at her — the whole green-gold of her eyes gone banked and patient, reading Aria's face the way she read a contract she was about to sign. "My turn," Sera said, and her gaze dropped to Aria's chest, to the bead of Dani's come that had threaded down from her nipple and hung there, fat and cobalt-lit, one breath away from falling. Sera didn't lick it off her skin. She caught it on her lower lip as it dropped, deliberate, and Aria watched her wife's mouth close around it and her eyes go half-lidded and then sharp again. Sera held it on her tongue a second before she swallowed. "Rain on hot asphalt," she said, quiet, to herself, filing it. "With iron under it." She licked her lip once, and then she was up on her elbow and her hand was flat on Aria's sternum, and the two of them were close enough that Aria could smell it on her breath — sweet and bright and wrong in the best way.

Dani rolled off Sera's shoulder and lay flat on her back, wings splayed across the sheets like something laid out to dry, and stared at the ceiling. The holy light had banked down to a low cobalt ember under her skin, but it was still there — she could feel it moving, slow and tidal, the way a second heartbeat would feel if it lived in the bones instead of the chest. She lifted one hand and turned it over, watching the light crawl under the veins of her wrist. "So that's what it feels like from the inside," she said, to nobody. "I keep expecting it to turn off. Like a phone screen."

Sera propped herself on an elbow and looked at her — the long, unhurried look she gave a contract she was deciding whether to sign — and then at Aria, who had rolled onto her back between them with one hand still absently resting on her own hip where the glow had dried. "It doesn't turn off," Sera said. "You just stop noticing it. Like the fridge." Dani made a small sound that was almost a laugh. "That's a terrible thing to say to a woman who grew a pair of wings two nights ago." She flexed her shoulders, and the wings folded down against her back with a dry whisper, then lifted again — a shrug, but bigger. "I keep almost knocking the lamps over. I keep — " she stopped, and turned her head on the pillow to look at Aria properly, "I keep thinking about tomorrow. And the day after. And the one after that."

Aria turned her head to meet her. Dani's face in the low light was still Dani's — the same small, cute bottom of a chin, the same shoulder-length brown hair fanned out on the pillow, the same mouth that made terrible puns at breakfast. But the eyes were cobalt now, and the skin under them had a faint metallic sheen, and the whole shape of her was a half-inch off from the woman who'd answered the door at the Crown Point apartment six months ago. "You can fold it down," Aria said, quietly. "The human shape. You don't have to be — this — at the grocery store." Dani was already shaking her head before Aria finished the sentence. "That's not the question," she said. "The question is whether I *want* to. And I keep getting the same answer, and the answer is annoying."

Dani said it like it was a confession, and Aria watched her face do the thing it did when she was working through a hard problem — the small furrow between her brows, the way her mouth moved around words before she let them out. "The Deva's not a costume," Dani said. "That's the part I keep chewing on. It's not like a dress I put on for special occasions. It's me now, under the skin. When I'm human-shaped I'm still her, I'm just — smaller. Folded down. Like a camp chair." She lifted one hand and turned it over again, and the light moved under the veins, slow and tidal, and she watched it the way you watch a screen you're not sure is off. "So the real question isn't whether I want to be her. The real question is whether I want people to *see* her. And the answer I keep landing on is — no. Not unless something's on fire. Not unless one of us is bleeding."

Aria propped herself on one elbow and looked at her wife across the small distance that was still Sera's body between them. "So the human shape is the disguise," she said. "The Deva comes out when it matters." Dani nodded, once, and the nod had weight to it — the weight of a decision she'd been carrying around all night and had finally set down. "Love or war," she said. "That's the rule. You get the human version at the grocery store and the school pickup and — I don't know, wherever it is we're supposed to be seen doing normal things. You get the wings and the light and the seven feet when it's one of you in trouble, or when something's trying to hurt what's ours." She flexed her shoulders and the wings whispered down flat against the sheets again, and she grinned, and the grin was still entirely Dani — all puns and teeth. "Which is honestly the same policy I had as a human. Just with more glow."

Sera nodded, slow, the way she nodded at a clause she'd already decided to sign. It wasn't much of a choice, and all three of them knew it — the dragon had been folded down inside the woman for two nights now, and every time the human shape shrugged its shoulders there was a half-second where the room expected wings. But the arithmetic was simple enough: a sixty-foot gold dragon does not fit in the passenger seat of the purple BMW.

Aria lay between them and did the math out loud, because the math was funny. "So the plan is — you drive, we look normal, and if something goes wrong on I-65 you pull over, get out, and turn into a municipal emergency."

"A dragon is not a municipal emergency," Sera said, flat. "A dragon is a federal one." She reached down and pulled the sheet up over Dani's hip, tucking it in at the corner like she was finishing a bed she'd made, and her hand stayed there a second longer than the tuck needed. "But yes. That's the plan."

Dani rolled off the bed and stood, and the folding-down took longer this time — not the coat-off of the Deva, but something slower, almost careful, the way you'd put away a good knife. The wings went first, retracting with a sound like a sail coming down. The light under her skin banked. Seven feet became six, then five-eight, then Dani — five-six in bare feet, hips wide, breasts full and heavy on a frame that had been built by injections and patience and eleven years of stubbornness, not by any spell Aria had cast. Aria stared. She had watched the polymorph reshape this body two nights ago, had seen it go from the one Dani had been issued to the one Dani had wanted, but she had never seen it come *back* — the small, cute bottom, the soft belly, the seven-inch cock she'd had inside of her half an hour ago now hanging half-hard and human-colored against a thigh Dani had spent years earning. "What," Dani said, catching her looking, and Aria realized she'd been staring with her mouth open like a tourist.

"Nothing," Aria said, and it came out too fast. "It's just — I forgot. That you were already — " She stopped, because the sentence was going somewhere embarrassing. Dani raised one eyebrow, and it was such a *Dani* expression that Aria felt something in her chest go loose. "You forgot I was already a hot trans chick before your magic got involved," Dani said, deadpan. "Yeah. Everyone does. It's the wings." She turned and pulled a shirt off the floor, and the motion was the same motion she'd made a thousand times — the shoulder roll, the reach, the little hop to get the second arm in — and Aria had never once noticed how much of Dani was in that hop until this second, when the Deva was gone and the woman who did the hop was standing in her place. "That's the shape I worked for," Dani said, quieter, buttoning. "The one you gave me is nice. It's a *lot* of nice. But this one's mine. I paid for it."

Aria sat up and looked at her — really looked, the way she'd looked at the dress in the hardware-store mirror five months ago and known it was hers. Dani's collarbones caught the lamplight the way they always had. The freckles on her shoulders hadn't moved. The Deva had been a cathedral; this was the house Dani had built with her own hands, and Aria understood, with a small hot pang under her ribs, that she'd been quietly insulting it for two days without meaning to. "I didn't pay for mine," Aria said, and her voice came out lower than she intended. "I woke up in it. That's the difference, isn't it. You *chose* yours first." Dani's hands stopped on the third button. She didn't answer, which was an answer.

Sera was already up, moving through the room with the sheet dragged off the mattress and knotted at her waist, and she paused at the foot of the bed to look at the two of them — the elf still flushed and streaked, the trans woman buttoning a shirt in the low light — and something crossed her face that Aria filed away for later, because it did not look like hunger and did not look like fondness and looked instead like a woman deciding whether to say a thing out loud. "The boys," Sera said, finally, and her mouth curved the way it curved when she was about to be cruel about something she actually loved. "Mike and Marcus. Do you think they're having *any* of this." She gestured vaguely at the three of them, at the sheets, at the smell of the room. "I bet Mike is in his kitchen at two in the morning doing pull-ups and being quietly thrilled about his forearms."

Aria laughed, and the laugh shook something loose, and she raised one hand and let it fall — the Prestidigitation rolling off her fingers like a small invisible tide. The come dried off her belly and her hip and her breast in a breath. The slick came off her thighs. Sera's forearm went clean to the elbow; the sheet in her fist went crisp and smelled faintly of nothing at all. Dani made a startled noise and looked down at her own shirt, which was suddenly warm and clean and smelled like the inside of a cedar drawer. "Okay," Dani said, plucking at the collar. "That's — you know what, I'm not going to pretend that's not the single most useful thing anyone's ever done to me after sex."

Sera crossed the room and caught Aria's face in both hands — not the way she caught a contract, not the way she caught Dani's wrist mid-stroke, but both palms flat on Aria's jaw, thumbs at the corners of her mouth, holding her still the way you hold something you're afraid of dropping. She kissed her. Slow, deliberate, the taste of Dani still on both their lips, and when she pulled back her eyes had gone the whole way to gold and she didn't blink. "Thank you," she said, and the words landed like she'd been carrying them up the stairs. "For trusting us enough to bring us into this. For — " her thumbs moved once, over the hinge of Aria's jaw, " — for being you. Whoever that turns out to be."

Then she stopped. Her eyes went still and unfocused the way they did when she was reading something no one else could see, that dragon's True Sight laying the room open layer by layer — and Aria watched her wife's face do something it had never done before, a small, private confusion moving under the calm. Sera tilted Aria's chin toward the lamplight and looked at her, and kept looking, and the longer she looked the quieter she got. "That's strange," she said, mostly to herself. "Dani's got three of them stacked under the Deva. The woman she was, the man before that, the kid before that — all of it still there, like coats on a hook. Marcus has his whole life under the Archmage. Mike's got forty years of Jason's brother under the Champion." Her thumb traced up Aria's cheekbone and stopped at the point of her ear. "You don't have any. There's no layer under this. No Jason Chance under the elf, no — " she pressed, gently, like she was feeling for a seam that wasn't there, " — nothing. This is the bottom of you. You're not a woman wearing a man's body, you're not a man wearing a woman's. This is the whole file."

Aria sat very still with her chin in her wife's hands and let that land. It should have shaken something loose — some drawer in the back of her skull marked JASON, some hinge that swung open when you pulled the right handle. She reached for it. She reached the way you reach for a step in the dark that you know is there because it was there yesterday, and her foot went through the floor. There was nothing under her. No boy who ate cereal standing up over the sink at two in the morning, no twenty-four years of a life she could have sworn she'd been living, no grief for the self that got left behind in some forest in Indiana. Just this — the elf in the lamplight, her own face, the whole file, floor to ceiling, nothing stacked underneath.

"That can't be right," Aria said, and it came out smaller than she meant it to. She pulled her chin out of Sera's hands and looked down at her own body — the slender wrists, the long pale thighs still streaked faint cobalt where Dani's come had dried before the Prestidigitation, the small high breasts. She'd spent five months learning this shape the way you learn a new language by immersion, and she had never once, not one time, reached for the old one underneath. There was no old one underneath. She'd assumed the man was down there the whole time, like a basement she just hadn't gone into yet. "I remember being him," she said, to the sheets, to the two women watching her. "I remember the apartment. I remember the game. I remember waking up in the woods and being *pissed* about the dice." She held up her hand and turned it over in the light, and there was nothing in it that had ever held a controller or a beer or a steering wheel. "But it's — it's not a layer? It's just me?”

Sera held her jaw a moment longer, thumbs still pressed to the corners of her mouth, and then she let go and sat back on her heels. "It's just you," she said. "Under the Deva there's a woman, and under her a man, and under him a kid on a tricycle — three coats on the hook. Under the dragon there's me at nine years old reading a contract my father left on the counter. Under you there's nothing." She tipped her head, gold banking down to brown, and her mouth did the small private thing it did when a number came out clean. "As though this was always you. As though Jason was the shell that got dispelled."

Aria waited for the floor to give. It didn't. The lamp on the nightstand ticked its filament, somewhere down the hall a pipe knocked once, and the fact sat there in the room with the three of them, plain as the sheets. She turned her hand over again and looked for the seam — the place where the boy ended and the elf began — and found none, and the not-finding felt less like a loss than she'd braced for. "That doesn't make any sense," she said, to the ceiling. "I was him for twenty-four years. I had a lease. I had a bad knee from tenth-grade football. I had — " she stopped, because the knee was the only one she could still feel, and even that was a story she'd told herself, not a body that had ever ached. "It doesn't make sense," she said again, quieter. "But it feels right. Which is the part that's going to keep me up."

Dani had stopped buttoning. She stood at the foot of the bed with her shirt half-done and her eyebrows up, working the same problem from the outside. "Okay, so — the shell got dispelled. That's a spell. Dispelling a shell is a thing you do to a *thing*, not a person." She pointed at Aria with the hand that wasn't holding her collar. "You're not wearing a costume, is what Sera's saying. You're not a guy in an elf suit. There's no guy. There's just the elf, and the elf remembers being a guy the way I remember being a kid in Oklahoma with a bowl cut." She let that sit, then shrugged, and the shrug had a little of the old hop in it. "Which, honestly? Good. Because I've been trying to figure out how to tell you I'm not into men, and it turns out I don't have to."

Aria was already moving. She came off the mattress on her knees and crossed the two feet of ruined sheet between them, and Dani had exactly enough time to get her eyebrows up before Aria's hands were in the shirt — both fists, the fabric still unbuttoned down the middle — and she pulled it open the rest of the way and kissed her. Dani made a small surprised sound against her mouth and then gave it back, one hand coming up to grip the back of Aria's neck, and Aria tasted it: herself, and Dani, and the sweet mineral thread of the come still drying on her own lip. She laughed straight into Dani's mouth — an actual laugh, unhinged and bright, the kind that came out of the chest and not the throat — and Dani caught it and laughed back, and the kiss went crooked and stayed crooked, teeth and breath and both of them grinning through it like idiots.

"That's disgusting," Dani said against her lips, not pulling away, her free hand sliding down to palm Aria's ass and drag her in. "You've got my — on your — " She didn't finish. Aria licked her lower lip, slow, deliberate, right where the taste still lived, and Dani's breath stuttered and her hand fisted in Aria's hair, and the kiss went from laughing to something hungrier in the space of one heartbeat. Aria leaned into it. She had her wife's mouth and her wife's taste and her wife's hand in her hair, and the whole strange file of the night — the dispelled shell, the nothing under the floor, the fact that she had never once reached for the man underneath — went quiet in the back of her skull and let her have this instead.

Behind them, Sera laughed — low, dry, from where she'd propped herself against the headboard with the sheet knotted at her waist, watching the two of them with gold banking down to brown. "There it is," she said, to no one in particular, and reached for the lamp.
