Chapter 22 of 23

The New Bed

The delivery guys haul the queen frame up the stairs, and Riley directs them into the bedroom while Inde and Jessica strip the old mattress off the box spring. They stand in the empty space, the new frame gleaming, and Jessica says, 'So, who takes the middle?' Inde looks at Riley, then at Jessica, and steps forward. 'I do.' The three of them lift the mattress together, the weight of it pulling them into sync, and when it settles on the frame, they stand back, breathing hard, the room suddenly smaller and bigger at once. Jessica announces she’s going to run for groceries, then she looks at Inde and winks at her. “I’m going to leave you two to break it in, I’ll be back in an hour.” She waves and leaves, then Inde and Riley look at each other, and Inde pushes Riley on the bed and starts unchanging. “We’re really doing this, huh?” Riley laughed, Inde laughed and smiled, the biggest smile Riley’s ever seen…

They heard the delivery truck before they saw it, the low rumble of the engine cutting through the afternoon heat, and Riley's shoulders went tight in a way Inde had learned to read. He was already moving toward the door when the knock came, three quick raps that echoed through the apartment. Inde watched him hesitate with his hand on the latch, the way he always did before opening himself to something new.

"You got this?" Jessica called from the bedroom doorway, her voice carrying that theatrical brightness she used when she wasn't sure what to do with her hands.

Riley nodded, pulled the door open, and the delivery guys filled the frame. Two of them, both older, both built like they'd spent years hauling furniture up stairs that had no business being that narrow. The first one, a wiry man with a salt-and-pepper beard, glanced at Riley, then past him at Inde and Jessica, and something flickered in his expression. Inde had seen that look before. The one that said, how'd this guy manage that?

"Queen frame," the man said, tapping the boxed metal leaning against the wall beside him. "Where you want it?"

"Bedroom," Riley said, his voice low, almost swallowed by the ceiling fan's slow rotation. "Back corner, against the window wall." He pointed, hand fidgeting at his side before dropping back into his pocket.

The delivery guys exchanged a look, then hoisted the frame. The box was long and awkward, and they had to angle it through the doorway, the cardboard scraping against the frame. Riley stepped back to give them room, his hands out like he was directing traffic, though there was nothing to direct. The wiry man grunted as they maneuvered the box into the bedroom, past the old mattress leaning against the wall, its stained cover a quiet testament to the night before.

"Right there," Riley said, pointing again. "That corner."

The guys set the box down with a metallic thunk, the sound of the frame's joints settling, and the wiry man straightened, wiping his forehead with the back of his hand. "Need help with assembly?"

"No," Riley said quickly. "I mean, no, we've got it. Thanks."

The man shrugged, and they were gone, the door clicking shut behind them, leaving the three of them standing in the bedroom with the boxed frame and the bare box spring and the old mattress leaning against the wall like a ghost of the night before.

Inde let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. The room felt different now, the air thicker, the ceiling fan stirring the smell of sweat and cologne and something else, something that might have been anticipation.

Jessica was already on her knees, tearing at the box's tape with her fingernails, her chin-length bob swinging forward as she worked. "Okay, this is happening," she said, and there was something giddy in her voice, something that made Inde's chest loosen. "This is actually happening."

Riley crouched beside her, his large hands gentle as he took over, peeling the tape back in one long strip. The cardboard flaps opened, and the metal frame gleamed inside, all clean lines and new-mattress smell. He lifted the pieces out one by one, laying them on the floor in a careful order, and Inde watched the way his hands moved, precise and sure, the same hands that had held her face in the dark last night.

"I'll get the mattress," Inde said, and she moved to the old one, the one they'd agreed to keep for movie nights. It was heavy, the fabric rough and warm under her palms, and she dragged it off the box spring, the metal frame groaning as the weight lifted. Jessica grabbed the other end without being asked, and they carried it together, the mattress's bulk forcing them into a sync, their footsteps finding the same rhythm.

They set it against the living room wall, and Inde straightened, wiping her palms on her jeans. The box spring was bare now, the metal frame of it exposed, and the room felt bigger and smaller at once, the empty space where the old mattress had been somehow more intimate than the bed itself.

Riley came out of the bedroom, the frame's pieces in his arms, and he set them down beside the box spring. He was quiet, focused, his honey-brown eyes scanning the metal parts, his hands already reaching for the instruction sheet. Inde watched him work, the way he crouched, the way his shoulders curved forward, the way he made himself smaller even when there was no one to shrink from.

Jessica flopped onto the box spring, the springs groaning under her weight, and she stretched, her arms above her head, her shirt riding up to show a strip of stomach. "So," she said, her voice light, "who takes the middle?"

The question landed like a stone in a still pond. Inde felt Riley's gaze flick to her, then away, his cheeks flushing. She looked at Jessica, then at Riley, then at the bare box spring, and something settled in her chest.

"I do."

Jessica's eyebrows rose, and a slow smile spread across her face. "Oh, bold. I like it."

Riley's flush deepened, but he didn't look away from her. Inde held his gaze, letting him see that she meant it, that she wasn't going to shrink from this. He swallowed, nodded, and turned back to the frame.

They assembled it together, the three of them, Riley reading the instructions aloud in his low, measured voice while Jessica handed him pieces and Inde held the frame steady. There was a rhythm to it, a choreography that felt natural, like they'd been doing this for years. Riley's hand brushed Inde's arm as he reached for a bolt, and she felt the heat of it through her sleeve, the brief pressure of his fingers before he pulled away.

The frame came together piece by piece, the metal joints clicking into place, the legs extending, the whole thing taking shape in the corner of the room. When it was done, Riley stood back, wiping his hands on his jeans, and looked at it. The queen frame gleamed in the afternoon light, all clean lines and new possibilities, waiting.

"Okay," Jessica said, her hands on her hips. "The moment of truth."

They moved the mattress together, the three of them, each gripping a side of the heavy fabric. It was awkward and unwieldy, and they had to angle it through the doorway, Jessica laughing as she nearly lost her grip, Inde's arm brushing Riley's as they adjusted their hold. The weight of it pulled them into sync, their steps finding the same rhythm, their breathing evening out.

They lifted it onto the frame, the mattress settling with a soft thump, and Inde felt the vibration of it through her arms, through her chest. She stood back, breathing hard, and looked at it. The new bed. The queen frame. The mattress that had never been slept on.

The room felt smaller and bigger at once, the new bed dominating the space, the old mattress leaning against the wall a quiet reminder of where they'd been. Inde's hand rested on the frame, the metal cool under her palm, and she felt something shift in her chest, something she couldn't name.

Jessica stretched again, her back arching, her shirt riding up. "Well," she said, her voice bright, "I'm going to run for groceries. We need food for tonight, and I'm not cooking on an empty stomach."

She grabbed her purse from the kitchen counter, slinging it over her shoulder, and then she looked at Inde. And winked.

"I'm going to leave you two to break it in," Jessica said, her voice casual, like she was announcing she was going to the corner store for milk. "I'll be back in an hour."

Inde felt her face heat. Riley's did too, she could see it, the flush creeping up his neck, his hands fidgeting at his sides. Jessica waved, her fingers wiggling, and she turned toward the door, her hand reaching for the knob.

The room went quiet. The ceiling fan turned, slow and rhythmic, stirring the air, and Inde heard the old mattress creak against the wall, settling. Jessica's hand was on the doorknob, her back to them, and Inde could see the curve of her shoulder, the way she paused, just for a moment, before she pulled the door open and stepped through.

The door clicked shut behind her.

The silence stretched, thick and warm, and Inde was acutely aware of the new bed behind her, the mattress still holding the heat of their shared lift. She looked at Riley. He was standing on the other side of the bed, his hands at his sides, his honey-brown eyes on her, and there was something in his expression she hadn't seen before. Not nervousness, exactly. Something else. Something that made her breath catch.

She took a step toward him. The floorboards creaked under her feet, and she saw his shoulders rise, then settle, the way they did when he was trying to decide whether to let himself want something.

"We're really doing this, huh?" His voice was low, rough, and it scraped against something in her chest.

Inde felt the corners of her mouth lift, a smile breaking across her face, the biggest smile she could remember wearing. She laughed, a real laugh, the kind that came from deep in her belly, and she saw Riley's face crack open, the nervousness falling away, a grin spreading across his own.

She pushed him. Gently, her palms flat against his chest, and he stumbled back, his legs hitting the edge of the new mattress, and he fell onto it, the springs groaning under his weight, his arms flailing, his laugh echoing in the empty room.

Inde stood over him, her hands on her hips, breathing hard. The afternoon light caught the dust motes drifting between them, and Riley looked up at her, his hair mussed, his eyes bright, his chest rising and falling.

The new bed creaked under him, settling, and Inde felt the weight of the moment pressing against her, the door still closed behind Jessica, the hour stretching ahead of them.

She didn't move. The room held its breath around them, the ceiling fan turning slow overhead, and Riley's chest rose and fell beneath his shirt, the fabric clinging to the sweat at his collarbone. His honey-brown eyes hadn't left her face, and there was something open in them now, something unguarded in a way she'd only seen in the dark, in the gold morning light, in the moments when he forgot to make himself small.

"You okay?" he asked, his voice low, and the question was so simple, so earnest, that it cracked something loose in her chest.

Inde laughed again, softer this time, and she dropped onto the mattress beside him, the springs dipping under her weight, tilting them toward each other. "I'm better than okay." She leaned back on her palms, looking at the room around them—the bare walls, the stacked boxes, the monstera casting its long shadow across the floor. "This is real now. The bed. The room. Us."

Riley propped himself up on his elbows, his gaze tracking hers across the room. "It felt real before."

"It did." She turned to look at him. "But this—" She pressed her palm flat against the new mattress, the fabric cool and unfamiliar under her hand. "This is a bed nobody's ever slept in. It's ours. All of it."

He was quiet for a moment, and she watched his throat work as he swallowed. Then he reached out, his hand covering hers on the mattress, his fingers warm and callused, and he didn't pull away. "I keep waiting for it to not be real."

"I know." She turned her hand over, lacing her fingers through his. "Me too."

The mattress creaked as she shifted, and the sound was new, unfamiliar, nothing like the familiar groan of the old one. Riley's thumb traced a slow circle on the back of her hand, and she felt the heat of it travel up her arm, settling somewhere deep in her chest. Outside, a car passed, the sound of its engine fading into the afternoon, and the apartment settled around them, the floorboards creaking, the pipes sighing in the walls.

"Jessica planned this," Inde said, and it wasn't a question.

Riley's mouth curved, a soft, crooked thing. "She's not subtle."

"She winked at me." Inde shook her head, a laugh escaping her. "Your girlfriend winked at me and then left us alone with a brand-new bed."

"Our girlfriend," Riley corrected, and the words landed in her chest like a warm weight. "And yeah. She did."

Inde looked down at their joined hands, at the way his thumb kept moving, slow and steady, like he was grounding himself in the contact. "She trusts us."

"She trusts you." His voice was quiet, earnest. "So do I."

The ceiling fan turned, stirring the warm air, and Inde felt the weight of the hour stretching ahead of them, the door still closed, the apartment empty except for the two of them and the new bed that had never held anyone. She squeezed his hand, and he squeezed back, and neither of them moved toward the thing they both knew was waiting.

The new mattress dipped under her as she shifted closer, her shoulder brushing his, and she felt him go still beside her. The room was full of the smell of new metal and fresh fabric, and underneath it, the familiar scent of him—soap and warm skin and something that was just Riley. She let herself breathe it in, let herself sit in the quiet of it, the two of them on a bed that had never held anyone, waiting to be the first.

The ceiling fan turned overhead, slow and rhythmic, and Inde felt the weight of the hour pressing against her skin like the heat. Riley's thumb still moved on the back of her hand, that slow, steady circle, and she watched the way his throat worked when he swallowed, the way his honey-brown eyes kept dropping to her mouth and then away, like he was afraid of being caught wanting.

"Riley."

His name came out softer than she meant it to, and he went still beside her, his thumb stopping mid-circle. She felt the shift in the air between them, the way the quiet thickened, the ceiling fan suddenly loud in her ears.

"Yeah?"

She turned to face him fully, pulling her hand free of his so she could reach up and touch his face. His skin was warm under her palm, a faint stubble rough against her fingers, and she felt him lean into the contact before he caught himself, before he made himself small again.

"I don't want to wait anymore."

The words hung in the air between them, and she watched his eyes go wide, watched the flush creep up his neck, watched him try to find words and fail. His mouth opened, closed, opened again.

"Inde, I—"

"I've never done this." She said it fast, before she could lose her nerve, before the weight of it could crush her. "I've never—with anyone. And I'm not saying that because I'm scared. I'm saying it because I want you to know. I want you to know that this is—" She stopped, her hand still on his face, her thumb tracing the line of his jaw. "That you're the first person I've ever wanted to do this with."

His eyes were wet. She saw it, the way they glistened in the afternoon light, and he reached up and covered her hand with his, pressing her palm harder against his cheek.

"I haven't either." His voice cracked on the last word. "I've never—I mean, I've thought about it, but—" He laughed, a broken, breathless thing. "I never thought I'd get to. With anyone. And now you're here, and I don't know what to do with it. I don't know what to do with you."

"You don't have to know." She shifted closer, her knee brushing his thigh, and she felt him tremble. "We figure it out together. That's what we do, right? We figure it out."

He nodded, his throat working, and then he leaned in and kissed her.

It was different from the other kisses, the ones in the dark, the ones in the gold morning light. This one was slow, deliberate, like he was memorizing the shape of her mouth, like he had all the time in the world and he wanted to spend every second of it here. His hand slid from her cheek into her hair, his fingers tangling in the long black ponytail, and she felt him pull her closer, felt the heat of his body through his shirt.

She made a sound against his mouth, something small and broken, and he answered it with a low noise in his chest that she felt through her palms, through her ribs, through the places she'd never let anyone touch.

His hand found the hem of her shirt, and he paused, his fingers resting there, waiting. She pulled back just enough to look at him, to see the question in his eyes, and she answered it by reaching down and pulling the shirt over her head herself.

The air hit her skin, cool and startling, and she watched his gaze drop, watched his breath catch. She was wearing a plain gray bra, utilitarian, the kind she'd bought because it was on sale and it fit, and suddenly she felt the weight of it, the plainness of it, the fact that she'd never cared before and now she cared so much it hurt.

"You're beautiful." His voice was rough, scraped raw, and he said it like it was a fact, like it was the simplest thing in the world. "You're so beautiful, Inde."

She felt the heat rise in her face, felt the sting behind her eyes, and she reached back and unclasped her bra, letting it fall. His breath left him in a rush, and she watched his hands lift, watched them hover in the air like he was afraid to touch her, like she was something precious.

"Can I?"

She nodded, not trusting her voice, and his hands came to her, warm and callused, cupping her breasts like they were made of glass. His thumbs traced the curves, slow and reverent, and she felt her nipples tighten under his gaze, felt the heat pooling low in her belly, felt a wetness between her legs that she'd only ever felt alone in the dark.

"You're shaking," he said, and his voice was soft, wondering.

"So are you."

He laughed, a breathless, disbelieving thing, and then he leaned in and pressed his mouth to her collarbone, his lips tracing a path down to the swell of her breast. She gasped, her hands finding his shoulders, her fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt, and she felt his tongue, warm and wet, circle her nipple before he took it into his mouth.

Her head fell back, a sound escaping her that she didn't recognize, something high and keening, and she felt his hands on her waist, steadying her, holding her like she was the only thing keeping him upright.

"Riley." His name came out broken, and she felt him smile against her skin.

"Yeah?"

"I need—" She stopped, her breath hitching as he switched to the other breast, his hand cupping the first, his thumb stroking the peak. "I need you to take your shirt off."

He pulled back, and she saw the flush on his cheeks, the way his hands trembled as he reached for the hem of his shirt. He pulled it over his head, and she let herself look at him, at the broad shoulders she'd only ever seen hunched, at the swimmer's chest with its light dusting of hair, at the way his stomach tightened as he breathed.

He was beautiful. She'd known he was beautiful, but seeing him like this, open and vulnerable and hers, it cracked something open in her chest.

"Come here," she said, and she reached for him, pulling him down onto the mattress beside her.

The new bed dipped under their weight, the springs groaning, and she felt him settle against her, his body warm and solid, his skin against hers. His hand found her waist, his thumb tracing the curve of her hip, and she felt the heat of him through her jeans, felt the hardness of him pressing against her thigh.

She reached down, her fingers finding the button of his jeans, and she felt him go still, felt his breath catch.

"Is this okay?"

He nodded, his throat working, and she undid the button, pulled down the zipper, pushed the denim down his hips. He lifted his hips to help her, and she felt the weight of the moment press against her, the reality of it, the fact that this was happening, that they were doing this, that she was doing this.

His boxers came next, and she saw him, fully, for the first time. He was hard, straining toward her, and she felt a surge of something that was equal parts fear and want, a heat that pooled low in her belly and spread outward.

"You're so—" She stopped, not knowing how to finish.

"I know." His voice was strained, embarrassed. "I'm—"

"No." She reached out, her fingers brushing the length of him, and she felt him shudder. "You're perfect. You're so perfect, Riley."

He made a sound, something between a laugh and a groan, and she wrapped her hand around him, feeling the heat of him, the weight of him, the way he pulsed against her palm. She'd never done this, never touched anyone like this, but his reaction told her everything she needed to know. The way his hips bucked into her hand, the way his breath came in short, sharp gasps, the way his hand found her wrist, not to stop her, but to hold on.

"Inde." Her name was a prayer, a plea, and she felt the power of it, the weight of it. "I don't—I'm not going to last—"

"That's okay." She leaned down and kissed him, soft and slow. "We have time. We have all the time in the world."

She pulled back, and she saw the question in his eyes, the same question she'd been carrying. She answered it by reaching down and undoing her own jeans, pushing them down her hips, her underwear following, until she was bare beneath him, open and vulnerable and completely his.

His gaze traveled down her body, and she felt the weight of it, the heat of it, and then his hand came to rest on her thigh, his fingers tracing the inside of her leg, moving higher, higher, until they found the wet heat between her legs.

She gasped, her hips bucking into his hand, and she felt him smile against her neck, felt his fingers slide through her folds, felt the slickness of her, the evidence of how much she wanted this, wanted him.

"You're so wet," he said, and his voice was wonder, awe, disbelief.

"That's because of you." She felt the words leave her, raw and honest. "That's all you."

He made a sound, low and desperate, and he positioned himself between her legs, the head of him pressing against her entrance. She felt the pressure, the promise of it, and she reached up and cupped his face, making him look at her.

"I want this," she said. "I want you. All of you."

He nodded, his eyes wet again, and he pushed forward, slow, so slow, and she felt herself stretch around him, felt the burn of it, the fullness of it, the way he filled her completely.

He stopped when he was fully inside her, his forehead pressed to hers, his breath coming in short, sharp gasps. "Are you okay?"

She nodded, not trusting her voice, and she felt him begin to move, slow and careful, pulling out almost all the way before pushing back in. The burn faded, replaced by something else, something that built with each thrust, something that coiled low in her belly and tightened.

"Riley." His name came out broken, and she felt him speed up, felt his rhythm falter. "Riley, I'm—"

"I know." His voice was strained, desperate. "Me too."

She felt it building, the pressure, the heat, the something that was about to break, and she wrapped her legs around him, pulling him deeper, and she felt him shudder, felt him lose control, felt him spill into her with a sound that was almost a sob.

And then she felt it, the wave crashing over her, the release she'd only ever given herself, and it was different, so different, because it was him. It was Riley, and he was inside her, and he was hers, and she was his, and nothing would ever be the same.

She came with his name on her lips, and she felt him collapse against her, his weight a comfort, his breath hot against her neck. The ceiling fan turned overhead, and the afternoon light caught the dust motes drifting between them, and she felt the aftershocks ripple through her, slow and sweet.

He pulled out, slow and careful, and she felt the loss of him, the emptiness where he'd been. He rolled onto his back beside her, his chest heaving, his hand finding hers on the mattress.

"Inde."

"Yeah?"

"That was—" He stopped, and she heard him swallow. "I've never—"

"I know." She turned her head to look at him, at the flush on his cheeks, at the wonder in his eyes. "Me neither."

He laughed, a soft, disbelieving thing, and he turned to face her, his hand coming up to trace the line of her jaw. "I love you."

The words landed in her chest like a warm weight, and she felt the sting behind her eyes. "I love you too."

He leaned in and kissed her, soft and slow, and she felt the new bed settle beneath them, felt the heat of the afternoon pressing in, felt the weight of what they'd just done, the gift of it, the way it had changed everything and nothing at all.

She heard the key turn in the lock, and she felt Riley go still beside her, felt the moment stretch, the door opening, Jessica's voice calling out from the living room.

"I'm back! And I brought ice cream."

Inde laughed, a real laugh, the kind that came from deep in her belly, and she saw Riley's face crack open, a grin spreading across his own. She pulled the sheet up over them, and she heard Jessica's footsteps in the hallway, heard her pause at the bedroom door, heard the smile in her voice.

"Oh," Jessica said, her voice bright, delighted. "Well. I'll just put this in the freezer."

The door clicked shut, and Inde felt the heat rise in her face, felt Riley's hand find hers under the sheet, felt the weight of the moment settling around them, the three of them, the new bed, the beginning of something that had no name.

"She's going to gloat about this," Riley said, his voice muffled against her shoulder.

Inde laughed again, softer this time. "Let her."

The ceiling fan turned overhead, and the afternoon light shifted, and Inde felt the new mattress dip as Riley shifted closer, his arm wrapping around her waist, his hand finding the curve of her hip. She let herself breathe him in, let herself sit in the quiet of it, the two of them on a bed that had never held anyone, no longer waiting to be the first.
