The laptop fan was already running, a low hum under the apartment's Thursday-night quiet — the neighbor's TV through the wall, a siren two streets over, the refrigerator kicking on and then thinking better of it. Mara had angled the screen so it caught her from the sternum up. The polite framing. The framing that said clothes, that said try-on, that said there was a perfectly ordinary reason a twenty-eight-year-old woman had opened a private, age-gated livestream at nine-thirty on a Thursday with a clothing rack parked beside her couch and a full-length mirror leaned against the opposite wall. Framing mattered more than most people gave it credit for. Framing was the whole alibi. You could do almost anything behind a good frame.
She nudged the rack another six inches left until reaching for a hanger would read as the natural motion of somebody doing chores instead of somebody arranging a stage. Which it was. Sort of. The rack had arrived Tuesday in a cardboard box whose shipping label she still hadn't peeled off. The box lay flattened beside the couch because she had stepped on it once instead of carrying it to recycling, and now carrying it to recycling felt like admitting defeat. A box. A rack. A pile of clothes. A woman trying things on. The most boring sentence in the world. She intended to spend the next hour making it increasingly difficult to defend.
The room was already open. The platform's little 18+ badge sat in one corner of the interface, next to the red standby light and the standing reminder that everyone entering had confirmed they were an adult. Three regulars had beaten her there. early, one wrote. you're never early. A third: is this actually clothes tonight. Mara looked at the screen without looking into the lens. "I'm not early. I'm on time. You're early." Another message — that was not an answer — and she smiled. "It was exactly an answer."
She reached for the first hanger. Ribbed knit, oatmeal-colored, aggressively ordinary. It photographed like nothing and fit like a confession. She held it up for half a second. "This looked better online." everything looks better online. "Deep. Thank you." She pulled her loose T-shirt over her head and dropped it on the couch. Black bra underneath, thin straps, no drama. She tugged the oatmeal top down over it. The knit caught at her bust, followed her waist, then released at the hem.
She turned toward the mirror. "See, this is what they do." She pinched the fabric. "They photograph it on somebody standing like this." She straightened unnaturally — shoulders back, stomach drawn in. "And then you exist like a person—" She relaxed. The hem climbed. "—and suddenly it's cropped."
keep existing like a person, somebody wrote.
"That's the plan." She reached overhead as though testing mobility. The hem rose another few inches. The chat noticed; she noticed them noticing. She lowered her arms and smoothed the shirt down, letting the moment vanish almost as fast as it had arrived. The thing about the room was that nothing below her sternum was visible from the laptop's angle — not directly. The mirror was another matter. She had positioned it mostly for herself, or at least that was the official explanation she had decided on. From the audience's side, only a slice of it showed over her shoulder. Not enough to see everything. Enough to wonder.
She pulled the oatmeal shirt off. "Maybe pile." She folded it once, badly, and set it on the couch arm. The second piece was a faded gray cropped sweatshirt whose raw hem looked factory-distressed because she had cut it with kitchen scissors last winter. She put it on. Three messages appeared at once: yes, gray, gray one.
"You don't get a vote yet."
then why are we here.
"I said try-on. Try-on means I try things on. You watch." Another message: what's the deal usually. She picked up her water. "The deal is usually I do whatever I want and you pretend you had input." Several laughing reactions.
She leaned forward for the glass and felt the plug shift inside her. Only slightly. Enough. She stopped for half a heartbeat with her fingers around the sweating glass. She had switched to the glow plug after dinner — the small one, smooth enough to forget until movement reminded her. She had left it under the bathroom light for a few minutes beforehand because charging glow-in-the-dark silicone was objectively ridiculous and therefore exactly the kind of private ritual she enjoyed. Most of the time it was only hers: a small fact sitting six inches from somebody's attention without ever becoming their knowledge. The room knew nothing about it yet. Good.
She took a drink. "This one's a maybe." She turned sideways for the mirror. The crop rose when she twisted. She let it stay there a beat longer than necessary, then pulled it down. you knew that was gonna happen. "I knew shirts move. Congratulations on discovering fabric." She stripped the sweatshirt off and missed the rack when she tossed it. It hit the floor. She looked at it, then at the rack, then left it where it was.
The next hanger held a deep-green bodysuit. She paused. That one had been deliberate. Not because of the neckline — the neckline was almost conservative. The problem was everything below it. She had pumped earlier that evening. Not yesterday, not some forgotten aftereffect of another day. Tonight. About forty minutes before she opened the room. The pump itself sat back in the storage basket beside the couch, hose coiled badly under a towel. She had stood in front of the bathroom mirror afterward longer than she needed to, studying the temporary fullness with the private fascination that always came with watching her own body turn slightly unfamiliar. She had told herself she wasn't pumping for the stream. That distinction had lasted approximately twelve minutes. Then she had tried on the green bodysuit. Now it hung in her hand. The chat couldn't know any of that. Not yet.
"This one might require actual framing."
oh no.
"Behave." She stood and lowered the laptop stand. The camera tilted. The image changed from sternum-up to just above her knees, and the room reacted — THERE WE GO, professional production, she found the tripod.
"It's a laptop stand."
same thing.
"No." She stepped backward until most of her body fit inside the frame. "There. You can see whether things fit. That's the purpose."
absolutely the purpose.
"Correct."
She slipped the bodysuit on. The fabric stretched down her torso and between her legs. She knew before she looked at the screen. She knew from the way it felt. Pumping always made fabric behave differently — not dramatically enough that a stranger in a grocery store would clock it, but enough that she knew, and enough that somebody watching closely might. The green pulled taut across her pelvis. She turned toward the mirror and pretended to inspect the waist. The chat sped up. She gave them twelve seconds before she looked: wait. hold on. that fits different. you're fuller tonight. There it was.
She put both hands on her hips. "Maybe the bodysuit shrank."
while hanging up.
"Humidity."
indoors.
"Climate is complicated." Then one comment finally said it outright: you pumped. She ignored that one. A second followed almost immediately — you absolutely pumped — and this time she looked directly into the lens. Not long. Just enough. "No." The chat filled with laughing emojis. "That was convincing," she said.
not even remotely.
"I thought it was."
She turned sideways. The bodysuit pulled tighter. A new message: show the mirror angle. "No." Another: mirror. "No." Then: mirror mirror mirror. "If you ask three times it becomes less likely, not more." She stepped toward the mirror anyway. Not because they asked. Because she wanted to see. There was an important difference. At least to her. The temporary swelling changed the shape under the fabric enough that she could trace it with her eyes in the reflection. The seam exaggerated it. She liked that. She liked the altered familiarity. Her own body, temporarily louder.
"Maybe," she said. The chat paused. She smiled at the mirror. maybe WHAT. She turned back. "Maybe I pumped a little." The room erupted. "A little." WHEN. "Earlier." for this. "No." liar. She considered. "For clothes." That was worse. She knew it. They knew it. She let the explanation sit in the room until it turned funny. "I wanted to know if things fit differently."
science.
"Exactly."
show us the experiment.
"No."
She unfastened the bodysuit. Reset. That mattered. The room expected the next move to be more, so she gave them less. She pulled on a loose black T-shirt instead. The chat complained. "See? This is what happens when you get greedy." She reached into a shopping bag. "I actually bought underwear." The complaining stopped. Three pairs came out together: a soft cotton brief, a narrow black thong, and a pale sheer pair she had added to the cart mostly because the reviews were split between surprisingly comfortable and absolutely not. She held them up. "We're doing useful information now."
oh thank god.
"Shut up."
She took the cotton pair first. Changing on camera required rules. She had several. The most important was that she never actually needed the screen to betray her. She could do that herself. She stepped behind the rack so the bars and hanging garments obscured most of her lower body. Most. She pulled off the bodysuit, then the underwear she'd been wearing. The rack shifted when her knee bumped it. For half a second there was a narrow view between two hanging skirts. She knew. She had felt it move. She could have corrected it immediately. Instead she counted. One. Two. Then she nudged the skirt back into place. The chat exploded. She pulled the cotton panties on and came back around. "What?"
YOU KNOW WHAT.
"I was changing."
WE KNOW.
"So why are you surprised?"
She stepped into the center of the frame. The cotton pair was comfortable — the first problem. The second was that it fit like ordinary underwear attempting to contain something currently less ordinary. The fabric pulled between the swollen outer lips instead of bridging smoothly over them. She looked down, then at the screen, then down again. "That is not usually how these fit."
we noticed.
"Apparently." She walked to the mirror — front, side, turn, back — and tugged the waistband higher, which made it worse. "That's definitely worse."
do it again.
"No." She did. The chat reacted. She laughed. "Okay, those are comfortable. They just have no discretion whatsoever."
She changed again. The second pair was the thong: black, minimal, the waistband high on the hips, the narrow front offering far less room for diplomacy. She stepped back into frame and covered herself with both hands. "No." The chat lost its mind. "No. Absolutely not."
best one.
"Objectively incorrect."
turn around.
"No."
fit test.
"That phrase has already been abused tonight." She lowered her hands. The thong disappeared into the exaggerated fullness between her legs in a way that made the whole garment look several sizes too small. She watched herself in the monitor. For once she didn't have a joke ready. Not because she was embarrassed. Because she liked it. That was different.
She hooked her thumbs under the sides and adjusted it. The swelling shifted with the fabric. A small pulse of satisfaction moved through her. you like that one. She looked at the comment. "Maybe."
second maybe tonight.
"Don't keep statistics." She turned around. The thong rose between her ass cheeks. When she bent slightly to check the back in the mirror, the base of the plug came into view — small, pale in the low light, faintly green from the charge it had taken earlier. The chat caught it instantly. WAIT. She straightened. WHAT IS THAT.
"No idea."
liar.
"Could be anything."
it is literally glowing.
She looked over her shoulder at the mirror. The base was visible. Barely. She smiled. "Oh."
OH???
"That was already there."
HOW LONG.
"Before you people got here." She faced the camera again. "You don't get credit for that."
The room filled with reactions. She slipped a finger under the thong waistband and snapped it against her hip. "Also, we're establishing a rule." The chat slowed. "I am not taking these off on stream." Immediate response: pulling them aside isn't taking them off. She stared at the screen. "That took seven seconds."
technically correct.
"You people are exhausting."
technically.
"No."
She walked back to the rack. Reset again. She picked up a black skirt, stepped into it over the thong, zipped it at the side. The hem stopped high on her thighs. She turned once. Nothing. Turned again. Then sat. The skirt climbed. She smoothed it down, crossed one leg, watched it climb again. "Okay, that's irritating."
seems fine from here.
"Naturally." She stood and tried the plaid skirt next — slightly longer, pleated, more movement. She spun once in front of the mirror. The skirt lifted and dropped. The chat filled with eyes. "You saw fabric."
we saw potential.
"That's not a thing." She sat again. The pleats spread. She leaned forward to read a comment. The skirt rode higher. She could feel the thong pulling tighter across her already swollen pussy.
Someone typed: which panties fit the pumping best. She read it aloud, then paused. "Fit the pumping." She looked down. "That is a terrible sentence."
answer it.
"The cotton ones."
prove it.
"No."
comparison.
"You already saw both."
not really.
She let the pause stretch. She liked pauses. A pause let everybody think the next thing had been their idea. She stood. "All right." The room accelerated. "Comparison. That is all." She stepped out of the plaid skirt, hooked her fingers into the thong waistband, stopped, looked at the lens. "I said I'm not taking them off." The room remembered immediately. aside. not off. LOOPHOLE. She sighed like a woman surrounded by idiots. Then she stepped closer to the camera. "Fine."
She turned slightly sideways. One finger slipped under the narrow front of the thong and moved the fabric aside. For the first time that night there was no layer between the audience and the actual result of the pump. It looked more dramatic without fabric trying to flatten it. Her outer lips were visibly swollen, fuller and heavier than usual, the skin still holding the temporary puffed softness she had admired in the bathroom mirror. She glanced down. The sight made her stomach tighten. She had seen it already. That wasn't the point. Seeing it through the frame was different. Knowing other adults were seeing it at the same time made it different again. She held the fabric aside for three seconds. Exactly three. Then let it snap gently back. "Comparison complete."
The chat became unreadable. She walked calmly to her water. Her face felt warm. She drank. THREE SECONDS.
"Correct."
again.
"No."
why three.
"Because four is showing off."
She picked up the sheer pair. Reset. The sheer underwear turned out to be mostly useless. She put them on anyway. The fabric made concealment theoretical rather than practical. She came around the rack and stopped. "Oh, these are ridiculous."
keepers.
"No." She turned toward the mirror. Under the lamp, the material barely softened what was beneath it. It did, however, make the transformation beautifully obvious. She adjusted the front with two fingers. The fabric clung. Her breath changed — slightly, not enough to lose control, enough that she noticed. The chat noticed too. you're getting distracted.
"I'm evaluating."
with your fingers.
"Tools of the trade." The phrase hung there. She laughed first. "All right. Bad wording."
A request appeared: mirror closer. "No." Another: sit facing mirror. "No." Then one from a regular: leave the skirt on and test sitting. She considered that. Better. She selected the black skirt and stepped into it over the sheer panties. "That one at least makes sense." She sat, crossed her legs, uncrossed them, leaned back. The skirt pulled against her hips and bunched at the waist. She moved forward again. The plug pressed inside her. The sheer fabric dragged lightly across the pumped swelling. A warm ache had started to collect between her legs. She knew where the scene was going. She had probably known before she opened the room. Still, pretending the destination stayed uncertain made the road more interesting.
She looked toward the side table. The glass dildo lay there — clean, placed deliberately before the stream under the deeply unserious excuse that she might want it later. The chat followed her eyes. Messages appeared immediately. She pointed at the screen. "No." More messages. "No asking." The messages kept coming. "You are all proving my point." She ignored the toy for another full minute. Talked about the skirt instead. Complained that the zipper caught. Checked whether the hem twisted. Read somebody's opinion about black versus plaid. Asked whether anyone actually understood women's sizing. Then, only after the room had mostly stopped asking, she picked up the dildo.
The glass caught the lamp. She held it between two fingers. "This is not what you think."
yes it is.
"It could be anything."
it is a dildo.
"That is an assumption."
we have eyes.
She laughed. Tapped the base against her palm. "Fit test." The chat exploded. "No, seriously." It got worse. "The skirt. Movement. Sitting. Range of motion."
you are testing a skirt with a dildo.
"When you phrase it like that, it sounds stupid."
how else would you phrase it.
She thought. "Comprehensively." That made her laugh hard enough that she had to put the toy down.
The whole room felt warm now. Not professional. Not staged. A couch with clothing thrown across it. Cardboard on the floor. A half-empty water glass leaving a ring on the side table. Her pump basket badly hidden under a towel. Her glow plug inside her. The little chat window scrolling beside her own reflection. This was what she liked. Not performing perfection. Ruining normality.
She picked up the dildo again. This time she slid back on the couch. The black skirt stayed on. She opened her knees. The camera saw the skirt, her thighs, the sheer panties between them. Nothing more. Yet. She touched the glass to herself through the fabric. Cold. She inhaled. The chat sped up.
"Cold."
warm it up.
"No." She pressed it more firmly against the swollen shape under the sheer material. The pressure rolled through her. Her eyes closed for half a second. When they reopened she looked straight into the lens. Someone typed, move the panties. She shook her head. "No."
She rubbed the glass slowly over herself. The sheer darkened slightly. The toy moved higher. Lower. She stopped to answer a question about whether the plaid skirt had pockets. It didn't. "Which is criminal." Then she resumed. The ordinary sentence made the obscene one stronger. She could feel herself slipping from playful interest into real arousal now, the line unmistakable. Her breathing was heavier. The plug felt more present. The pumped tissue was oversensitive beneath the toy. She hooked one finger under the sheer fabric. The chat erupted before she had even moved it. She stopped. "See? This is why you don't get things."
we didn't say anything.
"You typed in capital letters." She waited. Then she moved the panties aside because she wanted to.
The dildo touched bare skin. Her body jumped at the cold. "Jesus." The chat scrolled. She pressed the rounded end between her swollen lips. Slow. She watched herself on the screen while she did it. Not the chat. Herself. The temporary change fascinated her: the way the pump had altered the shape, the way the glass disappeared between fuller tissue, the way the black skirt stayed neatly zipped around her waist while everything beneath it had stopped pretending to be part of a clothing review. She pushed the dildo inside. Only a little. Stopped. Breathed. The plug gave her nowhere to ignore the sensation. Crowded was the word. Full in two directions. She rolled her hips once. A sound escaped her before she meant to make it. The room noticed. She opened her eyes. "Don't."
we didn't do anything.
"Good."
She pushed the glass deeper. The curve found the angle she expected. Her shoulders dropped. Her knees opened wider. The skirt rode higher. Nobody needed to ask anymore. She drew the dildo out and pushed it back in slowly, deliberate enough that each movement had its own beginning and end. The chat threw suggestions — mirror, turn around, keep the skirt, take the skirt off, show the plug, faster. She read them. "No." She kept her pace exactly as it was. A few strokes later she stood. Not because anybody had requested it. Because she had decided she wanted the mirror.
She carried the laptop stand two feet to the right. The angle changed. Now the audience saw her directly and her reflection behind her. "Better?" The chat responded unanimously.
"Obviously." She turned sideways. The black skirt stayed bunched around her upper thighs. The sheer panties remained pulled aside. The glass dildo moved inside her. In the mirror she could see the pumped outer lips closing around it. She stopped. That sight got her more than she expected. She looked at herself, not the camera. The whole loop completed itself in her head: bathroom, pump, mirror, clothes, denial, audience. Now this.
She slid the toy free. The swollen lips stayed parted a moment before settling. Her fingers touched them. Curiosity before performance. She spread them slightly, pressed them together, watched how soft and exaggerated they looked. "Okay," she murmured. The chat slowed. Someone typed, you really did pump. She laughed softly. "Did you need additional evidence?"
apparently.
She looked toward the lens. "Maybe a little." The callback filled the room with laughing reactions.
She pushed the dildo back inside. This time there was no pretending. The skirt stayed on because she liked the contrast. The sheer panties stayed crooked at one hip. The glowing base of the plug appeared whenever she turned far enough. The camera now showed exactly what she intended it to show. Nothing accidental remained except the language. Someone suggested turning around. She refused. Someone suggested kneeling. She refused that too. Someone suggested keeping the skirt on. "That one I was already doing."
still counts.
"No." She leaned one hand against the couch back and moved the dildo faster. Her breathing broke rhythm. The glass made a soft wet sound each time she drew it nearly out. The plug shifted with every movement. She looked at the mirror, then the lens. "I'm not doing anything to the couch."
The chat noticed the phrasing immediately. what does that mean.
"It means exactly what it means."
you're gonna make a mess.
"No."
you always say rules like a challenge.
She slowed. "That is not true." The room filled with variations of yes it is. She pulled the toy out. "I'm serious." She grabbed the towel from beside the couch and spread it beneath herself. The chat took that as evidence for the prosecution. "That is preventative."
uh huh.
"Preparation is not intention." That sounded so much like her earlier excuses that she started laughing. The laughter made the plug shift, made her clench around nothing, made the swollen ache sharpen. She sat back down on the towel. The black skirt still on. She opened her knees. "I am not squirting on my couch." The room reacted like she had announced a countdown.
"No." She pushed the dildo inside again. "Absolutely not." She rocked against it. The glass found the same spot. Her eyes shut. The chat kept moving at the edge of the screen, unreadable now. She didn't need it. The audience had become pressure rather than language. Knowledge. Adults on the other side of the lens watching her break exactly the rule she had just bothered to establish. Her free hand slipped between her legs. Her fingers found her clit. That changed everything. Her hips stuttered. She stopped moving the dildo for a second and simply held it deep while her fingers worked faster. The plug pressed from behind. Glass from inside. Her own hand outside. Too much information for her body to sort politely.
"Okay." She inhaled sharply. "Okay, no."
The chat understood. Messages blurred. She pulled the dildo halfway out and thrust it back inside. Again. Her fingers kept moving. The first wave hit her low and hard enough that her knees pulled inward. She forced them apart again. The mirror showed her flushed face, the black skirt shoved high around her waist, the sheer panties twisted uselessly aside, the toy disappearing between visibly swollen lips. The absurdity of the outfit made it hotter. She was still technically wearing the skirt. Still technically doing a try-on. She laughed once. The laugh broke into a moan. "Oh, fuck." Her hips moved faster. The room disappeared down to sensation: glass, pressure, plug, her hand, the aftereffects of the pump making everything feel exposed and overly sensitive.
She felt the familiar warning tighten through her. She knew. Immediately. She stopped. "No." The chat flew. She stared at the screen. "No."
you made the rule.
"Yes." She pulled the dildo out. Her pussy clenched around the sudden emptiness. "Rule stands." She lasted perhaps eight seconds. Then she pushed it back inside. The room lost its collective mind. "Shut up." She was laughing again. "Everybody shut up." Nobody did.
She curled forward, one hand gripping the toy, the other returning to her clit. The next wave built faster. Her thighs trembled. She could feel the pressure rising past the point where pretending control mattered. The towel was beneath her. Mostly. "Not the couch." The phrase came out breathless, half warning, half prayer. She drove the dildo deeper. Her body seized. The orgasm hit all at once. She cried out and jerked forward as fluid released beneath her in several hard spurts, some catching the towel, enough missing it that she heard the wet slap against the cushion and knew without looking that the rule had died exactly as predicted.
For several seconds she could do nothing except hold herself there. Dildo still inside. Plug still pressing against it. Her thighs shaking. Breathing loud enough to overwhelm the laptop fan. Then the silence began returning one household sound at a time: refrigerator, television through the wall, her own breath, the chat scrolling. She slowly removed the dildo and set it on the towel. She looked down. Towel. Couch. Back to towel. Then at the screen. The chat was merciless. She stared into the lens. "That," she said between breaths, "was your fault." The room exploded. "No, genuinely." More reactions. "You created a hostile work environment." That made her laugh until she had to cover her face.
She sat there another minute. Then practical Mara returned. Not ashamed. Just annoyed about upholstery. She carried the towel and toy to the bathroom, cleaned herself up, came back with another towel, blotted the couch, complained about whoever had designed removable cushion covers without considering the removal process, and ignored every suggestion that this had been predictable. When the crisis had downgraded sufficiently from sexual event to laundry problem, she returned to the clothing pile. The room was still full. Of course it was.
She pulled on the soft cotton panties from earlier. They fit differently now. The pumping remained, but the urgency had gone out of her body. She noticed the shape through the cotton, smiled, then pulled her original loose shirt over her head. The result was almost respectable. She sat in front of the laptop, straightened her hair with both hands, and moved the camera back to its original polite angle. Sternum-up. The alibi restored. The chat immediately started laughing. "I don't know what you're all reacting to."
NO WAY.
"What?"
She reached down beside the couch and retrieved two skirts. Black in one hand. Plaid in the other. "Anyway." The reactions became unreadable. "I asked a question like an hour ago and none of you were helpful." She held up the black skirt. "Black." Then the plaid. "Or plaid?" The chat refused to cooperate. She frowned theatrically. "This is literally a clothing stream." That somehow made it worse. She waited until one person finally typed plaid, another black, then five more votes appeared. She nodded seriously. "Thank you. Adults." She set the skirts down. "All right. I'm done."
round two.
"No."
you said that before.
"And look what happened."
She reached toward the laptop. The plug shifted faintly inside her. The small private reminder returned. She paused with her finger over the button, looked into the lens, and smiled. "Good night." She ended the stream. The interface vanished. The apartment became abruptly larger without the chat inside it.
For a moment she stayed exactly where she was: loose shirt, cotton panties, bare legs, clothes everywhere, the black skirt hanging from one hand because she had apparently forgotten to put it down, the pump basket half visible beside the couch, the damp towel waiting to become tomorrow's laundry. The screen went black enough to give her back a dim reflection. She looked at herself in it. Not flushed anymore. Not quite innocent either. The cotton underwear still sat differently because of the lingering swelling.
She touched the waistband absently. Then she looked at the dead camera. A slow smile arrived. She had meant to behave. Not completely. Obviously. But longer than that. At least ten minutes longer.
She picked up the plaid skirt, held it against herself in the black screen, considered it, then tossed the black one onto the floor with everything else. "Plaid," she decided. The refrigerator kicked on again, and Thursday night went back to being ordinary.
She was halfway to the bedroom before she thought about the cushion again. Not the wet one — she'd blotted that, twice, with the good towel, and it would dry by morning if she left a fan on it. The other thing. The thing she'd actually noticed in the dead screen and skipped past because the skirt was more interesting.
She went back. Knelt by the couch. Pulled the cushion up off the frame and turned it over, and there it was, faint on the underside where nobody would ever look unless they were looking: a darker ring in the ticking, maybe three inches across, where the first spurt had soaked straight through before the towel caught up. She stared at it for a while. The honest thing was to flip the cushion every time she sat down, forever, so the mark stayed down and nobody ever saw it. The other thing — the thing she was already doing, hand still holding the cushion up, thumb pressed flat against the stain — was to leave it. Not flip it. Let it dry in the wrong direction. Let somebody sit on this couch months from now, a friend, a date, somebody who'd never watched a single stream, and never know. Or maybe — and this was the part that made her stomach go warm all over again — maybe someday somebody would pull the cushion to look for a lost earring or a lighter and find a mark that had nothing to do with them and everything to do with a Thursday, and they'd have no idea, and she would.
She set the cushion back down the wrong way up. Ran her palm over the fabric once to smooth it. It looked exactly like an ordinary couch cushion. That was the whole trick, wasn't it. It always had been.
In the bedroom she stepped out of the cotton panties, reached back, and worked the plug free — slow, the small smooth flare easing out of her, leaving the low ache of something that had been there all evening finally gone. She rinsed it in the sink, set it on a folded hand towel to dry, and stood for a second with both hands braced on the counter, looking at the bathroom mirror. The swelling was already starting to ease. By morning her body would be exactly her body again, nothing temporary left, nothing anybody could point at. She'd have to remember it herself. Which was fine. She was good at remembering things nobody else knew to look for.
She pulled on an old T-shirt and no underwear and got into bed. On the nightstand her phone lit up once — a notification from the platform, a message waiting from one of the regulars — and she looked at the preview without opening it. so about that plaid vote. She locked the screen. Set the phone face-down. Lay there in the dark listening to the refrigerator, which had kicked on again and this time committed to it.
Tomorrow she'd carry the box to recycling. Probably.
