The Next Cramp

The cramp builds low and wide, and Alex's hand finds the front of his diaper again, pressing down as the warmth spreads. He bites the blanket to keep quiet, but a small whimper escapes, and the heels in the hall stop — closer now, right at the door. He hears the soft creak of the floorboards as she shifts her weight, and he knows she's listening, waiting for him to call out. The diaper is so full it bulges between his thighs, and his cock is hard against the wet padding, aching with every shift. He opens his mouth to say her name, but the cramp peaks and he gasps instead, the sound loud in the dark.

It came on slow this time, not like the others. A low, wide swell that started somewhere under his ribs and rolled down through his guts, tightening as it went, a fist closing by degrees instead of all at once. Alex lay still on his back and let it build, one hand already fisted in the crib sheet, the pink cotton bunched and damp under his palm.

The dress was rucked up around his waist. It had been since the second time, when he'd pushed the skirt up out of the way without thinking and left it there, too tired to pull it back down, too wrung out to care. The petticoat was a crushed heap somewhere near his hip. The tights had a run in one leg that he hadn't noticed until the crib light caught it. The glass slippers — the ones Verity had put in the extreme box, the ones he'd thought were a joke until he'd had to wear them across her threshold — lay on the floor where he'd kicked them off, one on its side, one upright, catching the nightlight.

His hand found the front of the diaper.

He pressed down. Just to feel it. The padding was thick and swollen between his thighs, so full it bulged when he shifted his hips, and the wet squelch of it was loud in the dark nursery, louder than it should have been. He pressed harder and felt the shape underneath — his cock, stiff against the soaked padding, aching with every beat of his heart. It had been hard for an hour. Maybe longer. He'd lost track of the time somewhere between the first cramp and the second, between the first release and the thing that had come after it.

He bit the blanket.

He'd pulled the corner of it up to his mouth without deciding to, the hem of the pink receiving blanket Verity had tucked in beside him, and he closed his teeth on the cotton and held. The cramp was cresting now, a deep downward push that had nothing to do with his will, and he didn't want to make a sound. He didn't want to give her that. He didn't know if she was still out there, if she was listening, if the whole thing was a test he was passing or failing or just something she'd set up to watch him squirm, but he wasn't going to —

The whimper got out anyway.

Small. High. Muffled by the blanket between his teeth, but not muffled enough. It hung in the dark room and Alex's eyes flew open and he stared at the ceiling, at the pastel animals turning slowly on their mobile, and he held his breath and listened.

The house ticked. The fridge hummed through the wall. Somewhere down the hall, a clock he hadn't noticed before counted out its seconds.

Then the floorboards creaked.

One board, just outside the door. Then another. Then nothing. The creaking stopped, and Alex knew — knew with a certainty that made his stomach drop — that she was standing there. Right there. On the other side of the door. Her weight settled onto the old boards and the boards had told him, and now she was still, listening, the way she'd been listening all night.

He let the blanket fall out of his mouth.

His hand was still pressed flat against the front of the diaper. He could feel his own pulse in his cock, thick and insistent under the wet padding, and he could feel the cramp still working its way through him, not done yet, still pushing, and he lay there in the dark with his mouth open and did not make a sound.

Say her name.

The thought arrived whole. He didn't know where it came from — some part of him that had been waiting all night for the moment, some part that had wanted this since the first box on his porch, since the first email, since the moment he'd typed yes into the little Etsy message window and hit send. Say her name and she'll come in. She'll open the door and see you like this, see what you've done to yourself, see the mess in your diaper and the wet sheet and the dress bunched around your waist and the way your cock is straining against the padding like you're fifteen years old and can't help it. She'll see all of it. She'll stand in the doorway and look at you the way she looked at you across her threshold, and she'll decide.

He opened his mouth.

The cramp peaked.

It wasn't a word that came out. It was a gasp — a raw, involuntary sound that tore up out of his chest and filled the dark room, and there was no hiding it, no blanket, no teeth, no silence. The pressure released all at once and the warmth spread through the diaper's padding and out against his thighs, and he felt it go, felt the heat of it soak into the cotton and the plastic and the sheet beneath him, felt the padding swell and sag under his hand as it took everything he had left.

His body sagged into the mattress.

The crib squeaked under him. One thin note from the springs, the way it had squeaked every time he moved, and he lay there with his eyes closed and his hand still on the front of the diaper and his heart going hard in his throat.

Out in the hall, the floorboards shifted again.

Alex's eyes opened. He stared at the ceiling and listened — the small creak of a foot's weight, the pause, the creak of the weight lifting — and then the footsteps, soft on the old wood, moving away down the hall. Toward the front of the house. Toward the kitchen, maybe, or the stairs.

She turned away.

He lay still and listened to her go, and the sound of it — the even, unhurried tread of her, the way she didn't stop and didn't hurry and didn't come back — did something to his chest that he didn't have a name for. It wasn't relief. He'd expected relief. He'd been holding his breath for what felt like hours, waiting for the door to open, waiting for her to come in and see him and say something, and now that she'd gone the relief didn't come. Something else came instead. A hollow, dropping feeling, like missing a step in the dark.

She'd heard him. She'd heard the whimper and the gasp and the squeak of the crib, and she'd stood outside the door and listened, and she'd walked away.

His hand moved on the front of the diaper. He didn't tell it to. He pressed down again, slow, and felt the full wet weight of the padding give under his palm, felt his cock jump against it, and he made a small sound in the back of his throat that he didn't recognize. He was still hard. He was lying in a crib in a wet diaper in a stranger's house with the door closed and the hallway empty and he was still hard, aching, leaking into the padding, and there was no one there to see it.

That was the part that got him.

Not the dress. Not the crib. Not the two bottles of formula sitting heavy in his belly, or the two loads he'd already pushed into the diaper, or the run in the tights. The part that got him was that she'd heard him and chosen not to come in. She'd known exactly what was happening on the other side of that door — she'd made it happen, she'd fed him the formula and locked him in and left him with the mobile and the nightlight — and she'd stood in the hall and listened to him do it, and then she'd walked away.

He was being left to stew.

The thought landed like a slap. He lay there and turned it over, and the more he turned it the less he could tell whether it was a punishment or a test or just — just what she did. Just what she'd been doing since the first box, since the first email, since the first moment he'd stood on his own porch in a pink dress and a diaper and let her watch. She gave him a step and made him take it, and then she stepped back and watched, and she never told him whether he'd done it right. That was the whole thing. That was the whole game.

And he'd wanted it. He'd typed yes and hit send and paid her money and driven three hours to her door.

His cock was still hard. The ache hadn't gone anywhere. If anything it was worse now, throbbing against the soaked padding with every beat of his heart, and he slid his hand down between his thighs and cupped himself through the diaper and pressed, and the wet squelch of it was loud in the dark room. He closed his eyes. He thought about the door opening. He thought about her standing there in the doorway with the hall light behind her, her face in shadow, her arms crossed, looking at him the way she'd looked at him when he crawled across her threshold — patient, appraising, not surprised by anything.

Look at you, she'd say.

That was all. Just that. Look at you. And he'd lie there in the wet diaper with his cock in his hand and he wouldn't be able to say anything, wouldn't be able to explain, because there was nothing to explain. He'd done it to himself. He'd bought the box and worn the dress and wet himself in a bookstore and driven three hours and crawled across a stranger's floor, and now he was lying in a crib in the dark with his own mess under him, and there was no version of the story where he was the one in control.

He pressed down harder. His hips lifted off the mattress, a small, involuntary roll, and the crib squeaked again and he froze.

Listened.

Nothing. The house ticked. The fridge hummed. Down the hall, the clock counted out its seconds, and somewhere past the window a car went by on the street and its headlights swept the ceiling and crossed the pastel animals on the mobile and were gone.

Alex let his hips settle back onto the mattress. The sheet was damp under him. The diaper was heavy between his thighs, warm and full and sagging, and his cock was still hard, and he lay there in the dark with his hand on the front of it and his eyes open and did not do anything else. He didn't move. He didn't call out. He didn't say her name.

He just lay there and waited for the next one.

His hand moved before he'd decided anything. It slid down off the front of the diaper, along the wet cotton, to the elastic at the waistband — that soft, stretched edge that had been biting into his belly for hours, the one he'd stopped noticing somewhere around the second bottle. He found it with his fingertips and stopped.

He lay there and felt the tape tabs. Two of them, one on each side, the plastic corners already curling up from the heat of his skin. He could have pulled them. He could have torn the whole thing open and gotten it off him and thrown it at the wall and been done with it. His fingers sat on the tab and did nothing.

Down the hall, the clock counted out its seconds.

He pushed his hand in.

Not through the tab. Under the elastic. His four fingers slid beneath the waistband and down into the padding, and the first thing he felt was heat — close and wet and clinging, his own body's heat trapped in there with him all night, and the soaked cotton giving way around his knuckles like something alive. The squelch of it was right there against his ear, no distance to it at all, and he heard himself exhale through his nose, long and slow.

The padding was thick. Thicker than he'd thought. He knew that — he'd felt it from the outside a hundred times — but from the inside it was different. It was heavy and wet and it pressed back against his hand from every direction, and the wetter parts were slick against his knuckles and the drier parts up near the waistband were soft and warm and dry, and he lay there in the dark and moved his fingers through it, slow, feeling the whole geography of the thing he'd done to himself.

Then his fingers found his cock.

No barrier. Nothing between them. Just skin on skin, his own hand on his own cock, the way it had been a thousand times in a thousand other places — his own bed, his own shower, the couch in front of the TV — except it wasn't, because his hand was inside a diaper, inside a wet diaper he'd filled twice in a stranger's crib, and the padding closed around his wrist and the smell of it came up at him, raw and warm and his own.

He didn't move.

He held it. Just held it. His fingers wrapped around the shaft and his thumb found the head and he lay there with his eyes open, staring up at the pastel animals drifting on their strings, and he didn't stroke, didn't squeeze, didn't do anything. He held his cock in his hand the way you'd hold something you were afraid of dropping.

It was hot. Hotter than his hand. He could feel every beat of his heart in it, thick and slow and insistent, and his thumb found the slit and it was wet there — slick with something that wasn't the diaper, something that came from him — and he smeared it around the head with his thumb and his hips shifted on the mattress, a small roll, and the crib squeaked.

He froze.

Listened.

Nothing. The house ticked. The fridge hummed through the wall. The mobile turned, one animal at a time, past the nightlight's glow and back into shadow.

He let out the breath he'd been holding and his hand started to move.

Slow. Slow as he could. He slid his fist up the shaft and the wet padding dragged against the back of his hand and the slick sound of it was small and close and obscene, and he stopped at the head and let his thumb circle there, and then he slid back down, all the way to the root, his wrist buried in the diaper up to the elastic, and the soaked cotton bunched around his forearm and he held himself at the bottom and felt the whole length of it in his hand.

He thought about the door.

He didn't mean to. He was lying there with his hand in his diaper in the dark, and the thought came anyway, the way it had been coming all night — the door opening, the hall light behind her, her face in shadow. She'd stand there. She'd look at him. She'd see his arm down the front of the diaper and she wouldn't say anything, wouldn't move, just stand in the doorway with her arms crossed the way she'd stood at her own threshold watching him crawl, and let him keep going. Let him do it with her watching. That was the thing. That was the thing that made his cock jump in his hand — not that she'd stop him, not that she'd say something, but that she'd just stand there and let him.

Look at you.

He could hear it. Her voice, level and unhurried, the way she'd said it in his head a hundred times since the first box. Look at you.

His hand moved faster.

The crib squeaked with every stroke now, one thin note on the up, one on the down, and he gave up trying to stop it — gave up trying to be quiet — and let his hips roll with it, pushing up into his own fist, and the diaper shifted with him, the wet weight of it sloshing against his thighs, and the smell came up stronger now, the smell of his own mess and his own come-slick hand and the formula and the wet cotton, and he turned his face into the receiving blanket and breathed it in.

His other hand found the blanket. Fisted it. The pink hem, the one he'd bitten down on when the cramp crested, and he pulled it up against his mouth and held it there, and the cotton tasted like the crib and the night and his own breath.

He thought about her voice again.

Say it, she'd say. That was the thing she'd want. Not the coming, not the mess — she'd want him to say it. Say what you're doing. Say who you're doing it for. And he'd have to. He'd have to open his mouth with his hand down the front of his diaper and say it out loud into the dark room, and she'd stand in the doorway and listen to him say it, and she wouldn't touch him, wouldn't help him, wouldn't do anything but listen.

His hips bucked. The crib banged against the wall — one hard rap of wood on plaster — and he stopped dead.

His hand went still inside the diaper. His breath came through the blanket in short, wet pulls. He lay there and listened, every muscle in him locked, and down the hall the clock kept counting and the fridge kept humming and the house ticked the way it had all night.

No footsteps.

He waited. Ten seconds. Twenty. The mobile turned. The nightlight hummed its low electric hum. And no floorboard creaked, no hand found the doorknob, and Alex lay there in the crib with his cock in his fist and his mouth full of blanket and understood, slowly, that she wasn't coming. She'd heard the crib bang on the wall and she hadn't come. She'd heard the whimper and the gasp and the squeak and she'd walked away, and now the bang too, and still nothing, still no footsteps in the hall, still just the clock and the fridge and the dark.

She was leaving him to it.

He pulled the blanket out of his mouth. His lips were wet. He lay there breathing and his cock throbbed in his hand, and the ache was worse now, deeper, a low heavy pull down in his balls that made his thighs want to close and his hips want to move, and he didn't know whether he was allowed.

That was the thing. That was what she'd done to him. He didn't know whether he was allowed.

He'd have laughed at that, a week ago. He'd have laughed at all of it — the box on the porch, the dress, the diaper, the whole ridiculous Etsy thing — and now he was lying in a crib in her house with his hand down the front of a wet diaper and he was actually lying there asking himself whether he was allowed to touch himself, whether it was a step she'd given him or a step he'd taken on his own, whether she'd hear the crib bang again and come in and this time — this time —

He started moving again.

Slower this time. Softer. He kept his hips flat on the mattress and did it all with his wrist, a small tight movement, his fist sliding up and down the shaft inside the wet padding, and the squelch of it was quiet now, small and rhythmic, and the crib didn't squeak at all. He could do it like this. He could do it all night like this, quiet, and no one would ever know.

His thumb found the head again. Wet. Slicker now. He spread it around and his whole body tightened, a long slow clench from his thighs to his jaw, and he had to stop again and breathe through it, the blanket back between his teeth.

Down the hall, a door opened.

He heard it — the soft click of a latch, the drag of wood on wood, and then the floorboards, one after another, coming back down the hall toward the nursery. His hand went rigid inside the diaper. His eyes flew open and fixed on the ceiling and his heart slammed so hard he could feel it in his throat, and the footsteps came on, unhurried, even, one board at a time, and stopped.

Outside the door.

He could see the shadow of her feet in the light under the door. Two dark shapes, still. She was standing right there, close enough to touch through the wood, and he could hear her breathing — or he thought he could, or he wanted to — and his hand was still down the front of the diaper, still wrapped around his cock, and he didn't pull it out. He didn't move at all. He lay there with his fist around his cock and his mouth open and waited for the door to open.

The doorknob turned.

Then stopped.

He heard the small metallic sound of it — the click of the latch coming free and then going back — and the shadow under the door shifted, and then the footsteps started again, moving away. Back down the hall. The latch clicked somewhere at the far end. A door closed.

She'd turned the knob and changed her mind.

Alex lay there and stared at the ceiling and his hand was still inside the diaper and his cock was still hard in his fist, and the hollow dropping feeling was back in his chest, worse than before, so bad it made his eyes sting. She'd come to the door. She'd put her hand on the knob. And she'd decided no — decided he wasn't worth the opening — and walked away, and left him here with his hand down the front of his own diaper and no one to see it and no one to stop it.

His fingers closed around his cock.

He squeezed. Hard. The whole length of it in his fist, wet and hot and straining, and a shaky breath came out of him — not a word, not her name, nothing — just air, just the sound of a man alone in the dark with his hand in his own mess. He lay there and held himself and didn't stroke, didn't move, just held on, and under his ribs the low wide swell was starting again, the familiar roll, the cramp coming up slow to meet him.

He didn't roll over all at once. It happened in pieces — his shoulder first, a slow turn that pressed the wet padding tighter against his cock, and then his hip, and then his knee dragging the sheet up into a twist under him. The crib springs complained, one thin note after another, and he didn't stop this time. He turned his face into the receiving blanket as he went, the pink hem still bunched where he'd left it, and pressed his cheek down into the cotton and breathed.

It smelled like the crib. Like the formula, faint and sweet, and like him — sweat and skin and the warm closed-in smell of a diaper that had been on too long. He kept his face there. He got his stomach under him and his knees drawn up and his cock trapped between his belly and the sodden padding, and he lay still for a second with his forehead pressed into the blanket and his breath coming hot back off the cotton into his own mouth.

The cramp was still there. Low and wide, not pushing yet, just sitting in his guts like a hand resting flat. Waiting. He could feel it waiting.

He moved his hips.

Just an inch. A slow forward roll, and the wet padding dragged along the underside of his cock, and the whole length of it lit up at once — that specific friction, slick and heavy and warm, nothing like his hand. He stopped. Lay there with his forehead in the blanket and his mouth open against the cotton and felt the drag of it still going, the way the soaked cotton kept pressing down on him even after he'd quit moving.

His hand was still inside the diaper. He'd forgotten. His fingers were still wrapped around his own cock down in the wet dark of it, and when he rolled his hips the shaft slid through his fist as much as it slid along the padding, and the two things together — the fist and the wet cotton — made a sound he heard right up against his ear. Small. Wet. His.

He did it again.

Slower this time, so the crib wouldn't squeak. He pushed his hips down into the mattress and ground forward, and his cock pushed through his fist and the padding pushed back, and the pressure came down on the head of it hard and flat and he had to bite down on the blanket to keep the sound in. His thighs tightened. His toes curled up against the sheet. He pushed until his hips couldn't go any further and then he held there, grinding, the whole weight of his lower body pressing his cock down into the wet cotton, and the ache built up slow behind his balls and sat there, throbbing.

Then he pulled back. Dragged his hips up the mattress an inch and let the padding slide off him, cold air where the warmth had been, and the ache dropped and hollowed out and he made a small noise into the blanket and pushed down again.

Forward. Grind. Hold. Back.

He found the rhythm the way you find a word in a language you used to speak. It came back to him from somewhere far down — his own bed, years ago, a boy on his stomach with his face in a pillow and his hips working the mattress, before he'd ever known there was a name for what he was doing or a way to do it that didn't end in shame. He'd done it exactly like this. Face down. Face hidden. Hips rolling. And it had felt the same then, that same low secret pull, that same certainty that if anyone ever opened the door he would die on the spot.

The door was closed. The door had been closed all night.

He rolled his hips and the crib squeaked and he didn't stop for it. Let it squeak. Let it bang. She'd heard everything already — the whimper, the gasp, the mess going into the diaper, the crib knocking the wall — and she'd stood in the hall and turned the knob and changed her mind, and if she wasn't coming now then she wasn't coming, and the thought went through him warm and mean and he pushed his hips down harder than before.

The diaper squelched. He heard it right under his belly, wet and thick, and the smell came up off the mattress and into the blanket and into his mouth, and he turned his face and breathed it in instead of away. It was his. All of it was his. He'd made it, he was lying in it, and his cock was so hard it hurt, and there was nobody in the world to see him do this but the pastel animals turning slow on their strings.

He got his knees under him a little. Just enough to lift his hips off the sheet, and the diaper sagged down between his thighs, heavy and full, and the weight of it pulled at his waist and hung there while he held himself up on his elbows. His cock came free of the padding for a second — wet, flushed, slick with whatever was on the inside of that diaper — and the air on it was cold and he hated it, and he dropped his hips back down into the wet warmth and ground his cock into the padding and the whole thing gave under him like a body.

He buried his face in the blanket again.

Both hands now. He pulled his hand out of the diaper and got it into the blanket and twisted the pink cotton up in his fists, one on each side of his face, and pressed his forehead down into the middle of it, and his hips started moving on their own. Not slow anymore. A steady grind, forward and back, his cock dragging through the soaked cotton with every push, and the crib springs sang under him, one note on the push and one on the pull, and he stopped trying to keep it quiet. He couldn't. It had gone past the point where he could keep it quiet.

His balls drew up tight against his body and the ache sat right at the root of his cock, heavy and full and aching, and he pushed his hips down hard and ground and the pressure came down on the head of it and he saw white for a second and had to stop and gasp into the blanket and hold still.

Not yet. Not yet.

He didn't know why not yet. He didn't know who he was saving it for. He lay there with his face in the blanket and his hips frozen mid-push and his breath coming in wet pulls, and the answer was already there, the way it had been there all night.

Look at you.

She'd say it from the doorway. She'd stand there in the hall light with her arms crossed and watch him do this — watch him hump the mattress in a wet diaper with his face buried in a pink blanket like a child hiding from a nightmare — and she'd say it in that level unhurried voice, and she wouldn't come in, and she wouldn't stop him. She'd just watch. And he'd keep going. He'd have to keep going, because she was watching, because she'd told him to, because that was the whole thing — that was what he'd paid her for, that was what he'd driven three hours for, that was what he'd typed yes to into the little Etsy window with his heart going hard in his throat.

He'd wanted someone to watch him do the thing he'd always done alone in the dark.

His hips moved again.

Harder now. He stopped thinking about the squeak and the bang and the noise and let his hips work the mattress the way they wanted to, a fast rolling grind that drove the wet padding up against his cock and let it drop and drove it up again, and his fists twisted in the blanket and his face stayed buried in it and he could hear himself — small, wet, animal sounds coming out of him into the cotton, sounds he'd never let anyone hear, sounds he'd been making into his own pillow for years and never once said out loud to another human being.

The cramp came back up.

Slow. A wide downward roll through his guts, the same fist closing by degrees, and he felt it coming and he didn't stop. He pushed his hips down into it, ground his cock into the padding while his belly tightened around the pressure, and the two things braided together — the ache in his cock and the downward push in his guts — until he couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. He made a sound into the blanket. Long. Low. Almost a word.

His hips stuttered. The crib banged the wall — one hard rap, then another — and he didn't care, he didn't care, he was right at the edge and the edge was a wet warm wall and he was pushing into it with everything he had, his cock sliding through the soaked cotton and his balls tight and his whole body drawn up like a fist, and the cramp was right there with him, right at the crest, and he pushed down into both of them at once —

His hips slammed flat onto the mattress.

Everything gave at once. The cramp broke and the mess flooded out of him into the diaper, hot and sudden and more than he'd thought he had left, and it spread out under him and up against his cock and spilled over the sagging edge of the padding onto the dress and the sheet, and his cock jumped and emptied into the wet cotton at the same time, and he couldn't tell which was which anymore, couldn't tell the mess from the come from the formula from his own sweat, all of it one hot flood under his belly in the dark.

He lay there and shook.

His fists were still twisted in the blanket. His face was still buried in it. His hips were flat on the mattress and the diaper was a heavy soaked ruin under him and he could feel the wet spreading out past the elastic, down his thigh, into the sheet, warm and spreading and his. He couldn't move. His legs wouldn't answer. His breath came in short wet pulls through the cotton and his heart was going so hard he could feel it in his ears and in his cock and in the mess under him all at once.

The mobile turned. One animal, then the next, past the nightlight and back into shadow.

He lay in it. He didn't lift his face out of the blanket. He didn't want to see the room. He didn't want to see the ceiling or the animals or the door, and he especially didn't want to see the door, because if he looked at the door and there was light under it — if he looked and saw the shadow of her feet — he didn't know what he'd do. Cry. Beg. Something worse.

The smell was thick now. It filled the whole crib, warm and close and unmistakably his, and he breathed it in through the cotton because the cotton was all there was, and under his belly the sheet was wet through and the dress was wet through and he could feel the mess cooling against his skin, and he lay there with his hips still pressed down into it and his cock still half-hard in the ruined padding and did not move.

He listened.

The house ticked. The fridge hummed through the wall. Down the hall the clock counted out its seconds, one after another, and the mobile went around and around, and there was no creak of a floorboard, no click of a latch, no footsteps in the hall.

She hadn't come.

Not for the whimper. Not for the gasp. Not for the crib banging the wall or the sounds he'd made into the blanket or the mess he'd just made of himself. He'd done all of it — every sound, every push, every wet thing that had come out of him — and she'd stayed on the other side of the door, or downstairs, or wherever she was, and let him finish alone.

His eyes stung into the blanket. He pressed his forehead harder into the cotton and his throat closed up and he thought, very clearly, with his face in the wet pink hem and his hips still flat in his own mess: she heard me. She heard all of it. And she let me.

He didn't lift his head. He lay in the crib in the dark, on his stomach, in the soaked and ruined diaper, his fists still knotted in the blanket and his face still buried in it, and waited — for the cramp, for the door, for her — with the smell of himself rising all around him and the mobile turning slow above his back.

He lay there long enough for the sheet to cool under him. Then longer. The mess had gone cold against his skin, tacky in some places, still warm in the deep fold where his hip trapped it, and the smell had settled down into the room until it wasn't a smell anymore, just the air. His fists had cramped around the blanket. He opened them one finger at a time and the pink cotton stayed creased where he'd held it, four white dents in the weave that filled back in slow.

His knees hurt. He'd been on them without noticing, drawn up under him, and now that he noticed he couldn't un-notice. The crib mattress had a seam down the middle and his left knee had found it, and the pressure had left a red print he could feel but not see. He shifted his weight off it and the whole mattress moved with him, a soft collapse, and the wet sheet peeled away from his stomach with a sound like a bandage coming off.

He had to turn over. He didn't want to. He wanted to lie face down in it until the mobile stopped turning and the nightlight burned out and somebody, eventually, came to get him. But his shoulder was going numb and the dress had twisted up under his arm into a rope, and his cock — softer now, half-tucked against his thigh, slick and cooling — had started to stick to the padding in a way that was going to hurt when he moved.

He lifted his hips.

The diaper came with him for a second, then didn't. It had gone heavy, heavier than it had any right to be, and the weight of it sagged down off his body and hung between his thighs while the sheet underneath stayed stuck to his skin. He got one knee under him. The other. His elbows took his weight and the crib springs gave a long complaining groan, one note sliding into another, and he hung there on all fours with his head down and his hair in his eyes and the ruined diaper drooping off him like something dead.

Then he rolled.

He did it fast, the way you tear off a bandage, shoulder first and then the rest of him, and the mess slid off his belly in one cold wet sheet and slapped down onto the mattress beside him. The diaper stayed where it was, half under his hip, twisted, one tape tab still stuck to his skin and pulling. His back hit the mattress and the wet sheet took him — closed over his shoulder blades, his spine, the backs of his thighs — and he lay there with his arms out and stared at the ceiling and breathed.

The mobile turned. A yellow duck, then a green frog, then something blue he'd never identified, past the nightlight and back into shadow, and the shadows crossed his face one after another, cool, cool, cool.

His cock lay soft against his thigh. The air on it was cold. He could feel where the padding had pressed a ring into the skin at the base of it, a raised welt all the way around, and he touched it with two fingers without thinking and the skin there was hot and tender and his whole body flinched.

The tape tab was still stuck to his hip. He found it with his thumb and peeled it off, slow, and it took a little hair with it and he hissed through his teeth and dropped the tab onto the mattress beside his head. The diaper lay across his thigh now, a wet gray-pink weight, the cartoon bunnies on the front faded to ghosts. He looked at it for a while.

He didn't throw it. He didn't know why he didn't throw it. It was right there and the floor was right there and he could have gotten it off the mattress with one swing of his arm and he didn't. He left it lying across his thigh, and the wet of it soaked into the dress where the skirt was bunched under his hip, and he lay still and let it.

His glasses were somewhere. He didn't remember taking them off. He reached up and found them on the mattress by his head, one arm folded under the other, one lens smeared with something he didn't want to identify, and he put them on anyway and the room came into focus all at once — the bars of the crib, close and white and vertical, the nightlight's orange glow on the far wall, the mobile turning above him with its four animals and their frayed little strings.

He hadn't seen it properly before. He'd been looking at it all night and he hadn't seen it. The animals were hand-sewn, or looked it — the duck's wing stitched on crooked, the frog's eye a bead of black thread with a loose end curling off it, the blue one's ear coming apart at the seam. Somebody had made this. Somebody had sat down with a needle and made four small animals for a crib in a room nobody used, and the loose threads had never been trimmed, and the whole thing turned slow above him like it had been turning for years.

His throat did something. He swallowed it down.

The sheet was cold under his back now, cold and wet, and the dress had ridden up around his armpits. He pulled it down. It came down over his chest and stuck to the wet skin and he pulled it the rest of the way and smoothed the skirt flat over his hips, and the pink cotton lay over the mess on the mattress like a lid, and he could still feel it, the cold wet weight of it right under him, soaking up through the fabric into his back.

He turned his head on the pillow.

The door. He hadn't looked at it since he'd rolled over and he looked at it now — the thin strip of dark under it, the knob catching a sliver of the nightlight, and no light, no shadow of feet, nothing. It was shut. It had been shut all night. He'd heard the knob turn and stop and he'd heard her walk away, and now he lay on his back and looked at the door and the door looked back at him, shut, and the question he'd been avoiding all night sat down on his chest and made itself comfortable.

Was she coming back.

He lay there and tried to think about it and his thoughts wouldn't hold still. They kept sliding off into the sheet, the cold, the smell, the welt around the base of his cock, the duck's crooked wing. He was tired. He was so tired his bones ached with it, and the formula sat heavy in his belly, and every time he closed his eyes the mobile was still turning behind them.

He closed his eyes.

The mobile turned. He could hear it — a small dry creak at the top of its arc, once per revolution, the sound of a thing that had been turning a long time. Somewhere in the house a pipe knocked twice and went quiet. The fridge hummed. The clock down the hall counted out its seconds, and he counted with it for a while, and then he stopped counting, and then he wasn't counting anything.

His hand found the crib rail.

He didn't open his eyes for it. He reached up over his head and his fingers found the top bar, smooth and cool and worn pale on the upper edge where other hands had held it, and he closed his fist around it and held on. The bar was just wide enough to grip. He could feel the grain of it under his palm, the little ridge where the finish had worn through to bare wood, and he held it the way you hold a rail on a boat.

His breathing slowed.

Not all at once. It came down in steps, the way it had gone up, and each breath went a little deeper than the last and let a little more of the night out of him. The wet sheet had stopped feeling cold. The mess under his back had stopped being a thing he was lying in and had become, somehow, just the mattress, just the surface of the world, and his cock had gone soft and small against his thigh and stopped asking him for anything.

The mobile turned. The duck. The frog. The blue one. Past the nightlight and back.

His fingers loosened on the rail. Not off it — looser, curled, the way they'd be in an hour if nobody came, the way they'd be in the morning. The nightlight hummed its low electric hum and the shadows crossed his face and crossed back, and his glasses slid sideways on his nose and he didn't fix them.

Somewhere past the window, a car went by. Its headlights swept the ceiling — the bars of the crib thrown up in long white stripes across the plaster, moving, gone — and the room went back to orange and dark.

His eyes were closed. He hadn't decided to close them. He'd been looking at the mobile and then he'd been looking at the inside of his own eyelids and the mobile was still turning in there, duck and frog and blue, and the crib rail was cool under his hand and the sheet was warm under his back now, warm the way a bed is warm when you've been in it long enough to stop noticing, and somewhere very far away, down the hall, a clock counted out its seconds.

He didn't hear the door.

He wasn't listening for it anymore. His breath had gone slow and even and his hand had gone slack on the bar, three fingers still hooked over the top of it, and the pink dress lay flat over his stomach and the ruined diaper lay across his thigh and the receiving blanket was still knotted in a corner by his head where he'd left it, and the mobile went around and around above his back, and the nightlight burned, and the hall was silent, and the door stayed shut.

His mouth was open a little. His glasses had slid down to the side of his nose and caught there. On the rail, his hand slipped an inch — one finger letting go, then catching again — and held.

The mobile creaked at the top of its arc. He heard it from somewhere down inside himself, a sound at the far end of a long hallway, and he didn't open his eyes for it. The nightlight's hum had gotten into his teeth somehow, a low buzz behind the molars that he could feel more than hear, and the sheet had gone warm all the way through under his back — not dry, never dry, but warm, the way a thing is warm when your own body has finally given up arguing with it.

His glasses were still crooked. The frame had dug a groove into the side of his nose and he could feel the little dent of it, the way the plastic had pressed the skin into a line, and he didn't reach up to fix them. One lens was smeared and one wasn't and the smear made a soft fog over the left half of the ceiling, and the right half was clear, and the asymmetry of it was the only thing in the room that had edges anymore.

The diaper lay across his thigh. It had gone cool in a way the sheet hadn't — cooler, wetter, a separate cold thing that didn't belong to his body the way the mattress did. Every time he breathed in deep enough, the skirt of the dress lifted off his stomach a fraction and settled back down, and the pink cotton brushed the top of his thigh where the diaper wasn't, and the two temperatures sat next to each other like strangers on a bench.

He thought about the duck. Not the animal — the duck on the mobile, the one with the crooked wing, the one somebody had sat down and stitched with a needle and probably a thimble and probably their tongue between their teeth. He thought about the loose thread on the frog's eye, curling off it, never trimmed. Whoever made them had finished the job and then not finished it. Had walked away with the last little bit undone, and the crib had turned under that unfinished eye for however many years, and nobody had ever come back with scissors.

His hand was still on the rail. Three fingers. He could feel the grain of the wood under the pads of them, the worn-smooth top edge where other hands had held it, and he wondered, in the slow way you wonder things when you're this close to gone, whose hands those had been. Not hers. The wear was too old, too deep, the pale stripe down to bare wood was the color of something that had been gripped for years, and the crib was in a room she'd never shown anyone, and the mobile was hand-sewn, and the loose threads had never been trimmed.

He didn't get any further than that. The thought didn't want to finish itself and he didn't make it. It just sat there in him, the way the mess sat under his back, a thing that was there and was going to stay there and didn't need him to do anything about it.

A floorboard ticked somewhere in the house. Old wood, cooling, the kind of sound a house makes when it's settling down for the night, and he listened to it fade without lifting his head. The fridge hummed. The pipe that had knocked twice earlier stayed quiet. Down the hall the clock did its slow arithmetic, and he let it do it, and he didn't count along.

His cock was soft and small and had stopped being anything. Earlier it had been hard — hard in the mess, hard in the shame of it, hard in a way that had embarrassed him even alone in the dark — and now it was just a piece of him, warm against his thigh, and the welt the padding had pressed around the base of it had gone from hot to tender to just a ring he could feel if he thought about it and couldn't feel at all if he didn't.

He thought about it for a second. Then he didn't.

The receiving blanket was still knotted by his head where he'd left it. He turned his face toward it without opening his eyes and found the corner of it with his cheek — the nub of the knot, the little hard twist of fabric — and he pressed his cheek against it the way you press your cheek against a pillow you've already given up on. It smelled like the crib. Like the sheets and the wood and the faint sour ghost of the formula he'd spilled on it earlier, and under all that, faint, almost not there, something else — something clean and old, like a cedar chest, like a thing that had been stored a long time before it was ever used.

His breath went out of him slow and came back slower. The mobile turned. Duck, frog, blue, past the nightlight, and the shadows crossed his face and crossed back, and he stopped tracking which animal was which and just let the turning happen above him, around and around, and the creak at the top of the arc got further away with every revolution, a sound from a room he used to be in.

His fingers had gone loose on the rail. Not off — hooked, curled, the way fingers curl when the hand has stopped being a hand and become just a weight resting on something. The wood was cool under them. The bar was just wide enough to grip and he wasn't gripping it anymore, he was just lying under his own hand, and the difference didn't matter and also mattered in a way he couldn't name.

The nightlight hummed. The house ticked. The clock down the hall went on counting out its seconds into the dark, and the door stayed shut, and the hall stayed silent, and the mobile went around and around above his back.

His mouth was open a little. The air in the room had gone still and warm and smelled like him now — like the mess and the formula and the pink cotton and the old wood — and he breathed it in and breathed it out and it stopped being a smell and became just the inside of his own chest. His glasses had slid down to the side of his nose and caught there and he didn't fix them. On the rail, his hand slipped an inch — one finger letting go, then catching again.

And held.
