Maria's fingers were still in his hair when she said it — the name sliding out of her like something that had been held too long behind her teeth. "Jared."
Christian went still. His scalp prickled under her nails, and for a moment he was aware of everything at once: the hum of the bedside lamp, the way her thighs pressed together under the hem of the sheer nightgown, the black-brown of her eyes fixed on his face like she was waiting for a blow. He could feel her pulse in the fingertips resting against his temple.
He lifted his head.
She flinched. He saw it — the small, quick tightening at the corner of her mouth, the way her chin came up a half inch like she was bracing. She was already composing the apology. He could watch it build behind her eyes, the careful soft voice she'd use, the way she'd take it back and let him keep begging her for something she didn't want to give.
He grinned.
It spread slow across his face, wider than he meant it to, and he felt it happen and didn't stop it. His cheeks ached with it. Maria's expression went strange — confusion first, then a flicker of something close to fear, her whole body leaning back an inch on the edge of the mattress like the grin had weight and it was pushing her.
"Say it again," he said.
"Christian—"
"Say it again."
Her throat moved. He watched her swallow. The nightgown had slipped off one shoulder and she didn't fix it, and the honey of her skin glowed amber in the lamplight, and he thought, for one bright and terrible second, that he had never wanted her as much as he wanted her right now, with another man's name still warm in her mouth.
"Jared," she said. Quieter. Almost a question.
Christian pulled back onto his heels. His knees had gone stiff on the carpet and he didn't care. He reached past her, toward the nightstand, and his hand was shaking — not from nerves exactly, from something else, something that had opened up in his chest and was pouring out through his limbs — and he fumbled the phone off the charger, the cord snapping loose with a little plastic clatter.
He pressed it into her palm. Her fingers closed around it automatically, the way you take a thing someone hands you before you've decided whether you want it.
"Christian. Slow down."
"Call him."
His voice cracked on it. Broke clean in the middle of the second word like he was fifteen again, and he heard it happen and felt his face go hot, and still he didn't look away from her. He wanted her to see exactly how much he meant it.
Maria stared at the phone. The screen had woken under her thumb and there it was — the contact she hadn't deleted, hadn't archived, hadn't even changed the name on. Just Jared, with a number she'd clearly kept current, because the little thumbnail was a photograph, a real one, a man with sandy hair and a strong jaw squinting into sun somewhere outdoors, and Christian felt his stomach drop through the floor and keep going.
She'd kept his picture.
She'd kept his picture in her phone, on the nightstand, in their bedroom, for however many years, and Christian had never once thought to look, and now he couldn't stop looking, couldn't stop cataloguing every ordinary detail of the man's face — the light beard, the hazel eyes narrowed against the glare, the easy way he took up the frame like he'd never in his life worried about being photographed.
"You have his number," he said. Not an accusation. He heard how it came out — reverent, almost. He dropped forward onto his knees again, closer to the bed, and put both hands flat on her thighs.
Her skin was warm. Warmer than the room. He could feel the muscle under it tense and then, slowly, ease, the way she always did when he touched her there, and his thumbs pressed into the soft inside of her legs, spreading her a little without meaning to, the sheer nightgown riding up under his wrists.
"I never deleted it," she said. Defensive. Then, softer, like she was confessing it to herself as much as to him: "I never deleted it."
"I know." He kissed the inside of her knee, quick, dry, barely a kiss. "I know. That's — Maria, that's perfect."
"It's not perfect, it's—"
"How long?"
She looked at him. He watched her decide something, the little shift behind her eyes, the way her mouth firmed. "Six years. Since before we met."
Six years. He did the math without wanting to — before the wedding, before the engagement, before the first time he'd taken her to dinner and spent the whole night trying to make her laugh. Six years of this man sitting in a phone on her nightstand while Christian slept beside her, and she'd never said a word, and he had never once suspected, and that — that was the thing that made his cock twitch hard against his thigh, the secrecy of it, the sheer length of the silence.
"And you'd only do it with him," he said. "If you did it at all."
"Yes."
"Nobody else."
He leaned his forehead against her knee and breathed. The carpet was rough under his shins. Somewhere down the hall the refrigerator kicked on with its low hum, and the ordinary sound of it, the absolute ordinariness of a Tuesday night in their house, made his eyes sting.
"I've been asking you for months," he said into her leg. "Months. And you — you had an answer the whole time."
"I didn't want to hurt you."
"You thought this would hurt me?"
He lifted his head and looked up at her, and whatever was on his face made her breath catch — he saw it, the quick rise of her chest, the way her lips parted. She looked down at him kneeling there between her feet and something in her expression gave way, softened, went uncertain in a way he'd never seen before. She looked almost frightened of him. That was new. He liked it more than he should have.
"I thought you'd hate me," she said.
"Maria." He took the phone out of her hand — gently, thumb over thumb, the way you'd take something breakable — and turned it back on and held it up so the screen lit her face. "I'm giving you this. I'm putting it in your hand and I'm asking you to call him. Do you understand what I'm telling you?"
She didn't answer. Her eyes were on the screen.
"I want you to have him," Christian said. "I want you to have had him this whole time. I want—" His voice went again, thin and high, and he stopped, swallowed, tried to get it back down into his chest where it belonged. "I want to watch you want somebody the way you can't want me."
The words sat in the room. He heard them land. He hadn't planned to say that last part — hadn't even known it was true until it came out of his mouth — and now that it was out he couldn't take it back, and he found he didn't want to.
Maria's hand came down and rested on top of his head. Just rested there. Her palm was cool from the air conditioning and her fingers curled into his hair and held, and Christian closed his eyes and felt every single point of contact like a brand.
"Christian."
"Please."
"If I do this—"
"Please."
"—it's not going to be like you think it is."
He opened his eyes. She was looking past him, at the closed bedroom door, and her body had already begun to turn, hip shifting on the mattress, weight moving forward, the whole long line of her tilting toward the door like a plant toward a window. She hadn't moved yet. But she was going to. He could see it in the set of her spine.
"I know," he said. He didn't know. He didn't care.
She looked down at the phone in his hand. Her thumb came up and hovered over the screen, over the little green circle, and Christian stopped breathing. He was aware of it — the held air in his lungs, the stillness of his own ribs — and he made himself let it out slow through his nose, because he didn't want to miss anything, didn't want a single second of this blurred by his own stupid body needing oxygen.
Her thumb was shaking.
He put his hands back on her thighs, higher this time, up under the hem of the nightgown where the skin was hotter and softer, and he felt the tremor run down through her legs into his palms. She was nervous. Maria, who never let anyone see her nervous, who delivered bad news with a steady voice and a steady face, was sitting on the edge of their bed with her thumb shaking over her ex-boyfriend's name.
"You don't have to," he said. He meant it. He was surprised to find he meant it. "If you don't want to, we can put the phone down and I'll never bring it up again."
She laughed. It was a short, unsteady sound, almost a cough. "You'd bring it up again."
"I wouldn't."
"You would. You'd bring it up every time we fucked. You'd be thinking about it and I'd feel you thinking about it." She looked down at him, and there was something in her face now that he couldn't read, some expression he'd never seen her wear, half exasperation and half something else, something hungry. "You're already thinking about it."
He was. He was thinking about the man in the photograph, about the strong jaw and the hazel eyes and the way he'd look standing in this doorway, and his cock was so hard against his leg he could feel the wet spot forming at the head of it through his boxers, and he hadn't touched himself once.
"Yes," he said.
"Say it."
"I'm thinking about him fucking you."
The words came out flat and clear and he watched them hit her. Her whole body reacted — a flush climbing up her chest and throat, visible even in the low light, the skin going pink and blotchy above the neckline of the nightgown. She pressed her thighs together against his hands and he felt the resistance, the strength in them, and he held them apart, gently, just enough.
"While you watch," she said. Her voice had dropped. It wasn't quite a question.
"While I watch."
"And you'd—" She stopped. Swallowed. "You'd be okay."
"I'd be better than okay." He heard the desperation in his own voice and didn't bother to hide it. "Maria, I've been trying to give you this for a year. I've been begging you for it. And you've been sitting there with his number in your phone the whole time, letting me beg, and I—" He laughed, and it came out wet. "I've never been this hard in my life."
She looked down at his lap. He watched her look. The thin cotton of his boxers did nothing to hide it — the line of his cock straining up along his thigh, the damp patch at the tip, the way it jumped when her eyes landed on it. She looked at it for a long moment, and then she looked back up at his face, and whatever she'd been holding back gave way.
She pressed the call button.
The dial tone filled the room. Not a ring — the flat, hollow electronic burr of a line connecting, and Christian's breath caught in his throat and stayed caught. His hands tightened on her thighs hard enough to leave marks. He would leave marks. He wanted to leave marks.
Maria lifted the phone to her ear. Her eyes came off the screen and found his, and held, and he watched her mouth open and close once, twice, rehearsing something she didn't say. Her free hand came down and covered his where it gripped her leg, lacing her fingers through his, and her palm was damp.
The tone stopped.
A click. A shift of air on the other end of the line — the unmistakable small sounds of a man bringing a phone to his face, the rustle of fabric, a breath.
"Hello?"
Low. Roughened by sleep or surprise or both. Christian felt it go through Maria like a current — her whole body pulling taut, her spine straightening, her fingers clamping down on his. She turned toward the door without moving her feet, just her shoulders and her chest and her chin swinging that way, toward the closed door and the dark hallway beyond it, like some part of her was already up and walking.
"Maria?" the voice said. And then, quieter, the way a man says a thing he already knows: "Yeah. I thought that might be you."
Christian's grip tightened on her thighs. She looked down at him — a flick of the eyes, quick and hot and almost guilty — and he nodded. He couldn't speak. He nodded and nodded and his fingers dug into the soft meat of her legs and he watched her open her mouth to answer, the door still shut, the room holding every sound like it was waiting for the next one.
"Maria." Jared again, and this time there was an edge under the word, a man who'd been woken by a voice he'd spent six years not hearing. "You there?"
She didn't look at Christian. That was the thing he'd remember — not that she answered, but that her eyes went somewhere past the door, past the hallway, past the house entirely, and her voice came out of her flat and certain and nothing like the voice she used on him.
"Come over."
A pause. Fabric shifting on the other end. "Come over where."
"Here. My house." Her thumb moved against Christian's knuckles without her seeming to know it. "I want you to come over and fuck me. Don't ask me anything. Just get in the car."
Christian heard the breath go out of the man on the line. He heard it because the room was so quiet he could hear the refrigerator and his own heart and the soft creak of the mattress under Maria's weight, and into all that quiet came the sound of Jared exhaling like he'd been holding it since the phone rang.
"Give me the address."
She did. Numbers, street, the little detail about the blue mailbox and the second driveway, all of it delivered in the same flat voice, and Christian knelt on the carpet with his hands full of her thighs and listened to his wife give another man directions to their house. His cock was so hard it hurt. He could feel his pulse in it, a thick blunt ache along the underside, and the wet spot at the head had soaked through the cotton and gone cool against his skin.
"Twenty minutes," Jared said.
"Hurry."
She took the phone from her ear and looked at it, and then she pressed the red circle and the screen went dark and the room was just the two of them again with the lamp and the hum and the shut door.
Christian's mouth was dry. "You told him—"
"You wanted it." She said it without heat, almost absently, still looking at the dark screen. "You've wanted it for a year. You said so."
"I know what I said."
"Then stop shaking."
He looked down at his hands. She was right — they were trembling where they gripped her, little fine tremors running up through his wrists, and he hadn't noticed, and now that he had, they got worse. He pulled them back and sat on his heels and put them flat on his own thighs like a schoolboy called to the front of the class.
Maria stood up.
The nightgown fell back into place over her hips and she walked to the dresser and picked up a hair tie off the top of it and pulled her hair back, both hands, quick and practiced, the long dark weight of it gathering at the nape of her neck. Christian watched her do it from the floor. He watched her check her own face in the mirror over the dresser, tilt her chin, touch the corner of her mouth with one finger. She looked like a woman getting ready for something she'd done a hundred times.
"Should I—" He stopped. Cleared his throat. "Should I get dressed."
"No."
She turned around and looked at him down there on the carpet in his boxers, and her expression did something he couldn't follow — not disgust, not pity, something cooler and more appraising, like she was measuring him against a thing she already knew the size of.
"Stay like that," she said. "He should see what he's walking into."
Christian got up anyway. Not to dress — to move, because kneeling there while she looked at him like that had started to feel like the wrong thing to do with his body. He went to the window and put two fingers through the blinds and looked out at the street. Sodium light, empty asphalt, the neighbor's porch light burning the way it did every night because they never turned it off. A car would come down that road and turn into the driveway and a man would get out of it and walk up to the door of this house and Christian's chest did something complicated at the thought, a hot flush that started behind his sternum and spread down into his stomach and lower.
"You're going to watch," Maria said behind him.
"Yes."
"Say it properly."
He turned from the window. She was sitting on the edge of the bed again, ankles crossed, hands loose in her lap, and the lamplight was behind her so her face was mostly shadow and her shoulders caught the light on the way down. She looked calm. She looked more calm than he'd seen her in months, and that — more than the phone call, more than the name — was what made his stomach drop, because calm meant she'd decided.
"I'm going to watch him fuck you," Christian said.
"Good."
"I'm going to sit right there—" he pointed at the armchair in the corner, the one with the reading lamp beside it, "—and I'm not going to touch either of you unless you tell me to."
"I won't tell you to."
"Okay."
"I'm telling you now so it's not a surprise later." She uncrossed her ankles and recrossed them the other way. "This is between me and him. You get to be in the room. That's the whole thing. If you can't do that, go sleep in the guest bed and I'll tell him you weren't home."
Christian almost laughed. It came up in his throat and he swallowed it back down because she wasn't joking, and because some part of him liked the way she said it, liked being given the terms like a guest at a table he hadn't been invited to sit at. "I can do that."
"Then take the chair."
He took the chair. The leather was cold through his boxers and he sat on the edge of it with his hands on his knees and his feet flat on the floor and his heart going like something caged. The reading lamp was off. The room was one pool of light from the bedside lamp and a long soft dark everywhere else, and the shut door sat in the middle of it like a held breath.
They waited.
It was the worst part. Christian had thought the worst part would be the man arriving, or the man touching her, or the sounds, but the worst part was the waiting — the two of them in the same room with the phone call already made, nothing to do but feel the minutes, and Maria not looking at him, checking her phone, putting it face-down on the nightstand, getting up to open the window an inch and then close it again.
"You're nervous," he said.
"I'm not nervous."
"You opened the window."
She looked at the window. Then at him, and for a second her face was the face he knew — the small crooked smile, the woman who'd married him in a courthouse on a Tuesday because she didn't want a fuss, the woman who hummed in the kitchen and left her shoes in the doorway. Then it went away again and she was just watching the door.
"I haven't seen him in six years," she said. "I want him to see me first. Before he sees you."
Headlights swept the blinds.
Christian heard the car before he saw it — the low pull of an engine slowing, the crunch of tires on the gravel shoulder, the engine cutting. A door opened and shut, one solid thump, and then footsteps on the walk, unhurried, the footsteps of a man who had never once in his life felt like a guest.
Maria stood up.
She didn't go to the door. She stood by the bed with her hands at her sides and her chin up and her hair pulled back off her face, and Christian sat in the chair in the corner and watched her become a woman he'd never met.
The doorbell rang once. Then a knock, two knuckles, and then the latch — because Christian had never locked it, because who locks their door on a Tuesday night in their own house — and the front door swung open and boots came down the hall and stopped in the doorway of the bedroom.
Jared was taller than the photograph made him look. That was Christian's first thought: taller, and broader through the shoulders, in a plain gray t-shirt and jeans and work boots that had no business on the carpet, and he stood in the doorway with one hand on the frame and looked at Maria the way a man looks at water after a long walk.
"Maria."
"Hi."
Neither of them moved. Christian sat very still in his chair and watched the two of them look at each other across the room, and it took him a moment to understand what he was seeing, and then he did — they weren't hesitating, they were finishing a sentence they'd started six years ago, and he was not part of it.
Jared's eyes came off her and found him. They went over him once, top to bottom, the boxers, the bare chest, the chair, the hands on the knees — and something moved across the man's face that Christian couldn't name. Not surprise. Recognition, almost, like he'd been told a thing and was now confirming it.
"You're the husband."
"Christian."
"Christian." Jared said it back flat, tasting it, and then he looked at Maria again. "You want to tell me what this is."
Maria crossed the room. She did it slow, and she did it without looking at Christian once, and she stopped a foot from Jared and put her hand flat on his chest, over the shirt, over the heartbeat, and Christian saw the man's jaw tighten under the beard.
"He's going to watch," Maria said. "That's what this is. He wants to watch."
Jared's gaze slid sideways to Christian again and stayed there a beat too long. Then he looked back down at her, and his hand came up and closed over the back of her neck, not hard, just there, just the weight of a palm and four fingers, and Maria's whole body leaned into it about an inch.
"And you?" Jared said. "What do you want."
"I want you to fuck me."
"With him watching."
Jared nodded slowly. He didn't look at Christian again. He looked at Maria's mouth and then at her eyes and then he stepped forward into the room and the door swung shut behind him on its own weight and clicked, and Christian heard it click, and put both hands on the arms of the chair and held on.
"Then I don't care where he sits," Jared said, and pulled her in by the back of the neck and kissed her.
He kissed her like a man closing a door on something. One hand still on the back of her neck, the other finding her hip through the nightgown, and Maria made a sound into his mouth that Christian had never heard her make — low, and in the back of her throat, and nothing like the sounds she made in their bed.
Christian's hands were white on the arms of the chair.
Jared walked her backward without breaking the kiss. Two steps, three, and the backs of her knees caught the mattress and she sat, and he stayed standing over her with his thumb under her jaw, tilting her face up, kissing her slower now, deeper, like he had all night and knew it.
Maria's hands went to his belt. She found the buckle without looking, the way you find a thing you've found a hundred times, and Christian watched his wife pull another man's belt open with the flat of one palm and tug the leather through the loops.
"Look at me," Jared said.
She did. She tipped her head back and looked up at him with her hair loose now, the tie gone somewhere, and her mouth was wet and her eyes were black in the lamplight.
"He watching?"
"Yes."
"Good." Jared stepped out of his boots without looking down, one heel and then the other, and the leather hit the floor beside the chair and Christian flinched at the sound. "Then he can watch this too."
He pulled the nightgown off her in one movement — up over her head, arms raised, and she came out of it with her hair falling across her face and her breasts bare to the room. She didn't cover herself. She sat on the edge of the bed with her knees together and her hands on the mattress behind her and let him look at her, and Christian saw Jared's chest move, one slow breath, the way a man breathes when he's holding himself back.
"You got bigger," Jared said.
"I had a baby."
"I know." He said it flat, and then his hand came down and closed over her breast, palm and fingers, and Maria's head dropped back and her mouth opened and she didn't make a sound at all, just breathed through it. His thumb dragged across her nipple and it went hard under his hand, and he pinched it, and she gasped and her hips shifted on the bed.
Christian felt his own cock jump against the inside of his boxers. He looked down at himself and back up and hated how much he wanted to touch it and didn't.
Jared knelt.
He went down between her knees on the carpet in the same room where Christian had knelt an hour ago, and he put his hands on her thighs and pushed them apart and Maria let him, and Christian saw the wet shine of her on the inside of her thighs before he saw anything else. She was soaked. She'd been soaked since the phone call — he knew it, he'd had his hands on her — but seeing it from here, from the chair, from outside, was a different thing entirely.
"You're dripping," Jared said.
"Shut up."
"Make me." And he put his mouth on her.
Maria's whole body came off the bed. Her hands went into his hair and her heels dug into the carpet and she made a noise that Christian had never heard from her, a raw open sound, and then she clamped her own hand over her mouth to stop it and Jared pulled her hand away and said something Christian couldn't hear, his mouth still working, and Maria stopped covering her mouth and let him hear everything.
Christian gripped the arms of the chair. He could see Jared's tongue move, flat and slow up the length of her, and then pointed, quick, up at the top where she was swollen and dark, and Maria's thighs came up over his shoulders and her feet crossed behind his back and she started to move against his face.
"There," she said. "There, there, there—"
Jared hummed against her. Christian heard the sound of it, the vibration, and Maria's back arched off the mattress and her mouth came open and her hands fisted in the sheets on either side of her.
"Don't stop," she said. "Please don't stop."
He didn't answer. He put two fingers inside her — Christian saw them go in, saw her stretch around them, saw the wet sound of it carry across the room — and he curled them up and kept his tongue on her clit and Maria's hips came off the bed in a slow roll and she came like that, with her hand over her own mouth again and her eyes squeezed shut and her whole body pulling tight around his fingers.
It took maybe forty seconds. Christian counted none of them. He sat in the chair with his cock straining against wet cotton and watched his wife come on another man's mouth, and when it was over and her thighs let go of Jared's neck, she lay there panting with one arm thrown over her eyes and her chest heaving and her knees still spread wide.
Jared stood up and wiped his mouth with the back of his wrist.
"Six years," he said.
"Don't."
"I'm going to." He undid his jeans and pushed them down and his cock came out thick and heavy against his stomach, and Christian looked at it and then looked away and then looked back, because he couldn't not. "You think about it as much as I do?"
"Yes."
"Say it."
"I think about it every time he fucks me."
Christian's stomach dropped into the floor. He was in the room. He was right there. She said it with her arm still over her eyes and her voice still raw from coming and she said it like it was a fact about the weather.
Jared climbed onto the bed and settled between her legs. Maria's arm came off her eyes and she looked up at him and reached up and put both hands on his face and pulled him down and kissed him with her own taste still on his mouth.
"You want it slow?" he said against her lips.
"No."
"You want me to make you beg?"
"No." Her hands slid down his back to his hips and her heels hooked behind his thighs. "I want it now. I've waited six years. Fuck me now."
He reached down between them and Christian watched him take himself in hand and drag the head of his cock up her, once, twice, slicking it, and then he pushed in.
Maria's mouth came open but no sound came out. Her hands went flat on his chest and her eyes went wide and stayed wide, fixed on his face, and Christian watched her take him inch by inch with her whole body going rigid under him and then going soft, and then Jared bottomed out and stopped and held there and Maria finally let the breath out of her in a long shaking rush.
"Oh," she said. Just that. Just once. Like she'd found a word she'd lost.
Jared pulled back slow and pushed in again, slow, watching her face, and Maria's eyes rolled back and her lashes came down and her hands slid up to his shoulders and gripped.
"Still fits," he said.
"Don't be smug."
"I'm not smug." He pulled out to the head and pushed in hard and Maria cried out and her whole body jolted up the bed. "I'm grateful."
He started to move. Not fast — steady, deep, a rhythm Christian could have counted if he'd been able to count anything, and each stroke ended with a slap of skin and a small wet sound and Maria's breath punched out of her in a huff. Her heels dug into his ass. Her hands slid down his back and her nails dragged and Jared grunted and went harder.
Christian watched from the chair. His hands were fists on the leather. He was aware of the lamp and the blinds and the hum of the refrigerator and underneath all of it the sound of another man fucking his wife, and he was aware of his own cock leaking through his boxers, a wet circle spreading, and he did not touch it, because she had told him not to and because some small cold part of him wanted to see how long he could stand it.
"Harder," Maria said.
Jared gave it to her harder. He got a hand under her knee and pushed it up and out and the angle changed and Maria's next sound was a sob. The bed frame knocked against the wall — one, two, three — and Christian heard the neighbor's dog start barking through the open window and nobody in the room cared.
"Look at him," Jared said.
Maria turned her head on the pillow. Her eyes found Christian in the chair and stayed on him, and her mouth was open and her face was flushed and she looked at him while another man fucked her, and something in her expression was almost an apology and mostly not.
"You see?" Jared said, not to her. "You see what she does."
"I see," Christian said. His voice came out thin.
"Say thank you."
Maria's eyes didn't leave Christian's face. "Thank you," she said.
Christian's throat closed. He nodded. He couldn't do anything else.
Jared pulled out and flipped her. He did it with one hand on her hip and one on her shoulder, and Maria went over onto her stomach and came up on her hands and knees without being asked, and Christian saw her back arch and her ass push back toward the man and her hair fall forward over her face, and then Jared was behind her and pushing back in and Maria's fingers curled into the sheets.
From this angle Christian could see everything. He could see the stretch of her around him, the shine, the way her body gripped and released with each stroke, the pale smear of her own wetness on the inside of her thighs. He could see Jared's hands on her hips, the fingers digging in, the white marks they'd leave. He could see his wife's face in profile, mouth open, eyes half shut, taking it.
"Harder," she said again.
Jared went harder. The bed knocked the wall. Maria's elbows gave and she went down onto her forearms with her ass still up and her cheek on the mattress and she started to talk — not words, just sounds, small broken ones, in time with the thrusts.
Christian's heart was going so fast it hurt. He could feel it in his temples. He could feel it in his cock. He looked at Maria's face on the mattress and she was looking back at him, sideways, one eye, and she held his gaze while she came apart, and she didn't look away and neither did he.
Jared's rhythm broke. He got faster, shorter, his breath coming out in hard grunts, and he put a hand flat between Maria's shoulder blades and pressed her down into the mattress and fucked her with short hard strokes, and Maria's sounds got higher and closer together and then she went silent and her whole body pulled tight and she came again, a second time, with her face mashed into the sheets and her fingers tearing at the fabric.
Jared pulled out. He came on her back — Christian watched it happen, watched the first thick stripe land across her spine and the second lower, across the small of her back, watched it run down her side and onto the sheets, and then Jared's hand was on himself, milking the last of it out, and he said her name once, low, "Maria," like it was the only word he had left.
Maria lay still. Her back rose and fell. The cum on her skin caught the lamplight and shone.
Nobody said anything for a long moment. The dog outside had stopped barking. The room smelled like sex and sweat and the faint clean smell of the sheets she'd washed that morning, and Christian sat in the chair in his ruined boxers and looked at his wife's back and could not think of a single thing to say.
Jared got off the bed and went to the bathroom. The tap ran. Maria rolled onto her side, slowly, and the sheets came away from her back with a wet sound, and she looked at Christian across the room with her hair in her face and her chest still moving.
"Are you okay?" she said.
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
Jared came back with a towel and dropped it on the bed. He pulled his jeans up and sat on the edge of the mattress and looked at Christian for the first time since he'd walked in — really looked, unhurried, the way he'd looked at him in the doorway.
"You're going to want to lock the door next time," he said.
Jared didn't get up right away. He sat on the edge of the mattress with the towel in his lap and one boot still on, and he looked at Christian the way a man looks at a piece of furniture he's decided to keep.
"You're not going to say anything."
"I—" Christian's voice had gone somewhere. He found it again, low in his chest, and pulled it up. "I don't know what to say."
"Most men would've hit me by now."
"I'm not most men."
Jared's mouth moved — not quite a smile. He stood up and pulled his jeans the rest of the way on and did the belt, and Christian watched the leather slide through the buckle and remembered Maria's hands doing the same thing twenty minutes ago, and the memory landed in his stomach like a swallowed stone.
Maria hadn't moved. She lay on her side with the towel balled against her hip and her hair stuck to her cheek, and her eyes were on the ceiling. She looked like someone who'd just come up from deep water.
"You should go," she said. Not to Christian.
"Yeah." Jared found his other boot and sat back down to pull it on. "I should."
Neither of them moved for a second. Then Maria sat up, slow, and reached for the nightgown where it had landed on the floor, and she didn't put it on — she just held it in her lap, bunched, and looked at Jared with an expression Christian couldn't read from the chair.
"Same time next week?" she said. Light. Almost teasing.
Jared laughed. One short breath through his nose. "You're something else."
"I know."
He stood and walked to the door and stopped in the frame with his hand on it, and Christian thought he'd say something to him — something about the door, or the chair, or the boxers — but Jared just looked back at Maria over his shoulder and then stepped out into the hall, and a moment later the front door opened and shut and the gravel crunched and an engine turned over and the headlights swept across the blinds and were gone.
The room was very quiet.
Maria got up. She walked past Christian without looking at him and into the bathroom and the tap ran for a long time. Christian stayed in the chair. His legs had gone numb somewhere in the middle of it and he hadn't noticed until now, and when he stood the blood came back into them in a hot rush and he had to put a hand on the wall.
He stripped the boxers off and dropped them in the hamper and got into bed and lay on his back in the dark with his hands folded on his chest like a man laid out for burial. The sheets smelled like her. They smelled like him too, faintly, under her — that other smell, the one Christian had never had in his own bed before, and he lay there breathing it and did not sleep for a long time.
When Maria finally came to bed she didn't touch him. She lay on her own side with her back to him and her breathing evened out within a minute, and Christian stared at the ceiling and replayed it — the boots, the belt, the sound of the bed knocking the wall — until his eyes burned and finally closed.
It went on like that for a month.
Every Thursday, mostly. Sometimes Sunday afternoons when Christian was supposed to be at his mother's and wasn't. Jared would text Maria from the driveway — here, one word, no punctuation — and Maria would look up from whatever she was doing and her face would change, and Christian would go to the chair.
He learned things. He learned that Jared took his boots off at the door now, which Christian took as a courtesy and understood later was not. He learned that Maria had a sound she made only in the second minute, a low humming thing in the back of her throat, and that Jared knew exactly when it was coming and slowed down to make her wait for it. He learned that Jared didn't talk much during, but after, he talked — about work, about the truck, about his brother's divorce — and Maria would lie against his chest and listen and answer, and Christian would sit in the chair with his knees together and listen to the two of them have a conversation he wasn't in.
He learned to stop touching himself. Maria had told him once, at the start, and after the third time she caught him at it she didn't scold him — she just looked at him the way you look at a dog that's gotten up on the couch again, and he'd put his hands back on the armrests and kept them there. It was better that way. Sharper. He could feel everything more when he wasn't chasing the edge of it.
Some nights, after, she'd let him have her. Some nights she wouldn't. There was no pattern to it that he could find, no rule he could learn and follow, and that was the thing that kept him awake on the nights she turned her back — the not-knowing, the having to wait to find out what he was to her that week.
Thursday the fourth week, Jared stayed after.
That was new. He usually left within twenty minutes. That night he took a shower in their bathroom and came out with a towel around his waist and sat down on the end of the bed like he lived there, and Maria brought him a beer from their fridge and sat down cross-legged beside him, and Christian sat in the chair and watched the two of them drink beer and talk about a house Jared was thinking of putting a bid on.
"Two bedrooms," Jared said. "Garage. Needs a roof."
"You're not going to fix a roof."
"I'm going to pay somebody to fix a roof." He drank. "It's got a yard. Fenced."
"You don't have a dog."
"Not yet."
Maria laughed and leaned her head against his shoulder, and Christian watched her do it — the easy weight of her, the way her hair fell across his arm — and felt something turn over in his chest that wasn't jealousy. He'd been afraid of the jealousy in the first weeks. He'd braced for it. It hadn't come. What came instead was this other thing, this low steady hum of yes, that got louder every time he watched her relax into the man, every time he saw her laugh at something Christian had never once made her laugh at.
Jared finished his beer and set the bottle on the nightstand, on Christian's side, without looking at Christian. Then he said, to Maria, in a voice that had changed — flatter, more careful, a man laying a card face-down on a table:
"I want to talk to you about something."
Maria sat up off his shoulder. She'd heard it too, whatever it was. "Okay."
"Not here." He looked at Christian then. Just a glance, quick, and then back. "I mean — he can hear it. I just don't want to say it with your hand on my leg."
"Okay." She pulled her hand back into her own lap. "Go."
Jared looked at the wall for a second. Christian had never seen him do that — look away to find words. The man always had the words already loaded.
"I don't want to be your Thursday," Jared said.
The room got very still. Christian heard the refrigerator kick on down the hall.
"I'm not — this isn't a complaint about the sex." Jared's jaw moved under the beard. "The sex is — you know what the sex is. That's not what I'm talking about."
"Then what are you talking about."
"I'm talking about the rest of it." He turned his head and looked at her full-on, and Christian watched his wife's face from the corner of the room, watched her go still the way a deer goes still. "I'm talking about standing in your kitchen at midnight with your husband down the hall. I'm talking about knowing which side of your bed you sleep on and not being allowed to be on it when the light's off. I'm talking about driving home at one in the morning past my own house and not stopping because there's nothing in it."
Maria didn't say anything. Her hands were in her lap and she was looking at him.
"I want more than this," Jared said. "I want to be your boyfriend. I want it to be a real thing — not a Thursday thing, not a secret. I want to take you to dinner and have people see us. I want you to have a drawer at my place. I want—" He stopped. Breathed. "I want the ten years back, Maria. I know I can't have that. I walked off and I didn't call and I don't have a good reason and I'm not going to pretend I do. But I came back the second you called, and I've been here every time since, and I'm not going to keep doing it like this."
Christian's hands were flat on the armrests. He could feel his own pulse in his palms.
Maria's mouth opened. Closed. She looked at the floor between her feet and then back up at Jared, and her eyes were wet — not crying, just wet, the way they got when she was moved and didn't want anyone to see — and she said, "Yes."
Just that. One word. No pause in it at all.
Jared blinked. "Yes?"
"Yes." She laughed — a wet, startled sound, and her hand came up to her mouth and then away. "Yes, I want that. I've wanted that since the phone rang. I've been sitting here for a month waiting for you to ask me."
"I thought you'd—"
"I know what you thought." She leaned in and kissed him, hard, with her hand on the side of his face, and Jared made a sound into it and got his arm around her waist and pulled her in off the edge of the bed, and the beer bottle tipped over on the nightstand and neither of them noticed.
Christian sat in the chair.
He should have felt it. That was the thing he kept waiting for, sitting there with his hands on his knees — the moment when it would land, when the word boyfriend would go in like a hook and he'd understand what he'd done. He waited for it. He watched his wife kiss another man and say yes to another man and he waited to feel the floor go out from under him.
It didn't come.
What came instead was a warmth that started in his chest and spread down his arms and up into his face, a flush, a kind of light-headedness, and he sat there with it and understood, slowly, that he was happy. Not resigned. Not pretending. Happy. She'd said yes and the yes was real and somewhere under it, threaded through it, was the fact that she'd said it in front of him, that he was in the room, that he'd been the one who put the phone in her hand a month ago and this was where it had gone.
Jared broke the kiss and looked over at him. Maria turned too, still in the circle of his arm, and both of them looked at Christian in the chair like they'd just remembered he was there.
"You okay?" Maria said.
"Yes." His voice came out steady. Surprised him. "Yes. I — are you serious? You're going to be — you're going to be his girlfriend."
"Yes."
"And you're still—"
"Still married to you." She said it easily, like it was obvious, and the ease of it went through Christian like a drink. "That's not the part that changes."
Jared's hand was on her hip. He was watching Christian with that flat appraising look, and Christian looked back at him and didn't drop his eyes, and something passed between them across the room that neither of them would have known how to say out loud.
"So," Jared said. "You're fine with it."
"More than fine."
"You understand what it means."
"I think so."
"Say it back to me. So we're clear."
Christian took a breath. He looked at Maria — his wife, sitting on the edge of their bed in another man's arm, flushed and happy and more alive than he'd seen her in years — and then he looked at Jared and said it.
"It means she's yours. And I get to be in the room."
Jared held his eyes for a long beat. Then he nodded once, slow, and turned back to Maria, and put his mouth against her temple and said something into her hair that Christian couldn't hear.
Maria closed her eyes. Her hand came up and rested on the back of Jared's neck, and she breathed out, long, like a woman setting down something heavy she'd been carrying.
Christian stayed in the chair. The lamp was on and the blinds were shut and the beer was soaking into the nightstand, and from the driveway came the sound of a car passing on the street and going on, and none of the three of them moved for a while.
